The Life and Academic Inclination of Uihan Lee with the Pen Name of Jaun
This study examined the life and academic inclination of Uihan Lee(1692~1766) with the pen name of Jaun. He was a typical Confucian scholar who kept a distance from the central government. He played a very active role in the area of Milyang in the 18th century. He was influenced by Chongeon Lee(858~938), General of Byeokjin County. He also inherited the tradition of family learning which valued integrity and fidelity. Furthermore, he followed the academic tradition which Galam and Daesan had established, which was the mainstream in the academic world of the Yeongnam area. He shared the learning of Namin people in the area near present Seoul who inherited the academic tradition built by Hangang and Misu. In such various ways, Uihan Lee sought his own academic world. When he was young, he was interested in literature written by Confucian scholars, but at the age of fifty or so, he changed his academic direction to learning for himself. He led a life which practiced learning in his daily lives rather than focusing on theoretical Confucianism. Though his literary journal had some writings related to mental discipline, he was thought of as a literary master of the age because he created public and practical writings. Awakened to his obligation and responsibilities as a scholar, he developed the regional style of writing specific to Milyang.
