이 글은 조선중기의 임진왜란 초기에 경상우도의 의병 봉기에 크게 기여하고, 정유재란을 당하여 고립된 황석산성에서 전직 군수로서의 직분을 지켜 순절하였던 대소헌 조종도가 한국의 인물사 내지 문화사에 있어서 가지는 의의를 점검하고, 역사 문화 인물로서 대소헌 조종도의 위상을 역대 문헌에 수록된 그 인물 형상의 특징을 통하여 개괄하고자 집필되었다.
본론에서는 먼저 대소헌과 관련된 문헌을 사망 직후의 애도를 표한 輓章과 祭文, 친지나 가문 기록으로서의 碑誌와 傳狀, 국가나 사림의 공식 추모 문자로서의 褒贈 追崇의 문자 등 세 층위로 나누어, 해당 인물에 대한 사적 애도와 공적 추모의 전개 양상을 점검하고, 다음으로 이들 문헌에 빈번하게 나타내는 인물 형상의 특징적인 징표를 大笑子와 烈丈夫라는 두 가지 개념으로 요약하고, 그 인물 형상의 성립 정착 과정을 추적하는 한편, 이 두가지 징표가 가지는 인물사적 문화사적 의의를 간략하게 추론하였다.
결론에서는 대소헌 조종도가 남명 조식의 문도로서 학문을 성취하여 통달한 식견과 활달한 처신 및 왜란 도중 의병을 일으켜 국난에 헌신하고 황석산성에서 대의를 지켜 죽음을 감수한 행적으로 인하여, 그와 교유한 당대의 지인들은 물론 후대 사대부 지식인으로부터 대대로 추숭되고, 조정과 사림으로부터 누차 포증을 받아, 조선왕조의 역사에 있어서 유가 의리와 신념에 충실하여 죽음을 사양치 않은 인물 전형의 하나로 각인되었다고 논평하였다.

Daesoheon(大笑軒) Jojongdo(趙宗道) was one of the famous patriots in Imjin war[壬辰倭亂] that had occurred in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty. He had contributed greatly in to organize patriotic soldiers in west area of Gyeongsang Province[慶尙右道], and He dedicated the death for to the country in the isolated castle that built in Hwangseoksan[黃石山城] to combat the cruel Japanese invaders.
In this article, I evaluated him as one of the very distinctive historical figures in Joseon Dynasty. I stated several distinctive aspect of the portraiture of him in the three perspective. I examined the various documents such as the funeral adress, funeral odes, monumental inscriptions, biographical wrightings that had been written to commemorate his death. I divided it into three parts and I summarized it in two typical features.
The first compliment for him was that he was the man with loud laughter[大笑子]. He laughed usual well. We do not know the background of the laughter. Some people did not know why he laughed. sometimes, they also said he was crazy. However, his insights on things were very superior, His knowledge was vastly superior than the average person. His laugh was one of the security wise way to survive in a world turbid for political struggle.
The second compliment for him was that he was a ‘Passionate heroic big man[烈丈夫]’. He could have escaped death. However, he did not avoid death. He was fulfilling its responsibilities as a ruler, and he kept the scholarly conscience. He even laughed in the face of death in front of the Japanese invaders' blade.
In addition, he was a great poet and stylist, and was one of the competent administrators. Therefore, he was one of the most representative figures among the numerous disciples of the Nammyeong school.
