본 논문은 바이런의 초기시에 있어서 시적 화자가 사랑과 삶으로 야기된 자신의 내적고통을 스코틀랜드 하이랜드의 자연환경을 통해 어떻게 표출하고 있으며, 또한 자연이 내포한 신성하고도 종교적인 측면의 체험을 통하여 고통을 어떻게 극복해 나가고 있는가를 연구하는데 목적이 있다. 바이런이 초기시에서 그려주고 있는 시적화자의 억눌린 아픔과 이를 벗어나고자 하는 모습은 그의 중·후기 작품들 속에 유사하게 반복적으로 나타나는 모티프의 전형으로 나타남을 보여준다. 본 논문은 시적화자가 심연의 내적고통을 자연환경의 이미지를 통하여 어떻게 드러내며 이를 특히 자연환경과의 영적, 신비적 소통을 통하여 어떻게 대면하고 극복하고자 하는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 바이런의 초기 작품에서 시적화자는 자기 마음속 깊이 새겨진 고통에 대한 인식으로부터 자연과의 종교적인 체험을 통하여 그의 어둡고 불안한 마음에서 벗어나 평상심 및 영원불멸하는 가치를 찾고자 갈구함을 엿볼 수 있다.

This article aims to explore how Byron’s early poetry manifests the speaker’s religious experiences through an intriguing relationship between his perception of inner affliction and divine attitude toward the Scottish Highlands. The paper examines how the speaker in Byron’s Highlands poems unfolds his suppressed pain chiefly necessitated by love and life, and also searches for its redemptive solution by way of interacting with the exterior transcendental landscape. The article emphasizes the speaker’s religious quest for permanence and relief through the natural environment, which enables him to liberate from the haunted recognition of grief deeply abounding in his heart.
