본 논문은 두 가지 목적을 갖는다. 하나는 기독교역사에서 아나뱁티스트들의 역사적 위치와 그들 입장의 정당성 확보는 ‘평화와 정의’의 실천력에서 판가름 났다는 전제 아래 그들의 평화 담론을 논구해 보는 것이고 또 다른 하나는 아나뱁티스트들의 견해들이 ‘에큐메니칼 의제’로써 얼마나 설득력을 확보할 수 있는지 종교개혁 주류세력의 담론과 비교를 통해 검토해 보려한다. 지금까지 기독교 주류의 아나뱁티스트들에 대한 담론은 대부분 부정적인 견해가 주를 이루었다. 그들은 교회사의 각주로 취급받아 왔다.
그러나 20세기 들어 벤더학파(the Bender school)를 비롯하여 아나뱁티스트 그룹이 배출한 신학자들에 의해 아나뱁티스트 초기 운동과 그 지도자들에 관한 역사적 자료들이 발굴되고 그 운동에 대한 새로운 해석이 쏟아지면서 지금까지의 부정적인 시각이 교정되었다. 오히려 세속주의화 되어버린 오늘의 교회 현실에서 아나뱁티스트 운동은 하나의 대안세력으로 부상하고 있을 정도다. 16세기 종교개혁시대부터 오늘에 이르기까지 아나뱁티스트 운동은 종교개혁세력의 엄연한 하나의 축으로 역할을 해 오고 있으며 “역사적 평화교회”로 자리매김하였다. 따라서 아나뱁티스트의 평화 담론을 탐구하는 작업은 신학적인 오류나 사회적인 일탈 죄가 있는 것으로 비난 받았던 그들의 견해가 무엇인지를 확인해 보는 것이요 또 그들의 사상 속에는 새로운 영감과 통찰력을 배울 수 있는 많은 요소와 가치들이 내포되어 있음을 전제한다.

The Anabaptist movements arose early in the sixteenth century, and sought radical religious and social change. One of the salient characters they sought is to establish the genuine apostolic church in this world, following teachings of New Testament. The Anabaptists urged their congregations to undertake rigorous discipleship in accordance with the injunctions of the Sermon on the Mount. The Anabaptists’s commitment to peace and nonresistance has been woven into the teaching and practices of Anabaptists.
This article aims at exploration of peace-discourse the Anabaptists sought, which was regarded core value of their community. The paper demonstrates that the Anabaptist movement is another new way of the Reformation, and that their commitment to peace and nonresistance is loaded with ecumenical elements towards mainline reformation churches.
After survey of the Anabaptists’ historical features, the paper claim that peace discourse of the Anabaptists supports historical rationale in the way of peace, doing justice, bringing reconciliation, and practicing nonresistance. For the Anabaptists, peace and nonresistance entail not only the absence of conflict but also the restoration of right relationship. This paper argues that peace discourse of the Anabaptists will be able to provide persuasive effects for ecumenical solidarity among church denominations. Consequently, this article attempts to draw values and essentials for modern church from the Anabaptist movement.
