장현광 성리설이 지닌 성향은 이이 지지, 퇴·율의 절충, 이황 친화, 독자적 성취 등의 순서로 다양하게 평가되어 왔다. 최근 이이 친화적인 인물임을 주장하는 연구가 나와 그 동안 간과되었던 장현광 성리학의 한 측면을 자세하고도 설득력 있게 조명하였다. 그러나 논자는 이것이 장현광 학설의 일면일 뿐, 모든 것은 아니라고 생각한다. 무엇보다 그가 理發 개념에 부여한 의미가 이이의 것과 다르다. 그는 이이가 소홀하게 여긴 理의 필연적 작용력을 매우 강조하는데, 이런 경향은 오히려 이황 이 지향한 정신에 가깝다. 본고는 장현광이 중시한 理의 특성인 ‘필연’ 의 의미를 규명하고, 선악의 문제와 인간 심정의 해석에 이것을 적용하 여 일관되게 설명해 보고자 한다. 그는 선배학자들인 이황과 이이의 이론을 절충하여 자기만의 독자적인 학문세계를 구성해내었는데, 이이 의 학설을 지지하였다기보다는 이황의 이론을 수정 보완한 것에 가깝 다고 판단된다.

The Korean academic community appraised Chang Hyunkwang’s Neo-Confucian theory as the tendency to affinity for Yi I, eclectic ism, the tendency to affinity for Yi Hwang and unique theorist in order. By the way, a recent report asserted again that Chang Hyunkwang’s theory is close to Yi I’s theory. It has the virtue of detailedness and persuasive power. But I believe that is one aspect of Chang Hyunkwang’s theory, but rather another facet is more distinguishing feature. I took note of Chang Hyunkwang’s d issimilary ascription of meaning to the revelation of Fundamental Principle(理發). His concept of fundamental principle contains abundantly the meaning of necessity. This cognition is close to Yi Hwang rather than Yi I. This paper aims to explain the concept of the action of fundamental principle that Chang Hyunkwang possessed. Subsequently, I wanted to account for the problem of good and evil, addedly human mind from the view point of necessity consistently.
