이 글은 데리다의 환대의 철학에 근거하여 다문화 사회에서 이방인에 대한 환대의 특징 을 검토하고, 환대의 철학이 다문화 사회로서의 한국에 주는 시사점이 무엇인지 탐색하려 는 목적을 가지고 있다. 데리다의 환대는 다문화 사회에서의 이방인이 가져온, 이방인에 관 한 질문들을 통해 이방인/비이방인에 대한 관념과 양자 간의 경계를 해체함으로써 기존의 환대에 내재된 한계를 극복할 것을 요청한다. 또한 데리다는 환대의 법제화가 수반하는 딜 레마를 극복함으로써, 환대의 법을 통해 궁극적으로 이루고자 하는 것이 정의를 실현하고 자 하는 것임을 상기시켜준다. 마지막으로 환대의 철학은 제한적이고 조건적인 관용을 넘 어 무조건적이고 절대적인 환대를 실천하기 위해 끊임없는 시도가 필요함을, 그리고 그것 이 곧 정의를 실현하는 것임을 강조한다. 데리다의 환대의 철학은 평등과 사회적 정의의 실현과 관련하여 한국 사회에 중요한 시사점을 준다.

Based on Derrida’s philosophy of ‘hospitality’, this study aims to examine the characteristics of hospitality toward strangers in a multicultural society and explore the implications of the philosophy of hospitality to South Korea as a multicultural society. The idea of hospitality calls for overcoming the limit embedded in the existing recognition and attitude to others by destructing the boundary between stranger/non-stranger through questions of/about stranger. By overcoming the dilemma of legislation of hospitality, Derrida reminds us that laws of hospitality are ultimately intended to realize justice. The philosophy of hospitality underlines the need for constant attempts to implement unconditional and absolute hospitality, that is the realization of justice. Derrida’s philosophy of hospitality provides an important basis for equity and social justice in a multicultural society.
