許愼은 『說文解字』라는 중국 최고의 字書를 편찬하면서 部首라는 개념을 만들었다. 540개의 部首를 세워 모든 漢字를 각 部首 밑에 귀속시켜 체계 없이 흩어져 있던 漢字를 정리하고 검색의 편리를 제공하였다. 그는 “分別部居, 不相襍廁.”(부수로 분별하여 서로 어지럽게 섞이지 않게 한다.)라는 말로 部首 건립의 취지와 목적을 언급하였다. 그러나 『說文解字』 540개의 部首를 조사해 보면 部首만 세워놓고 이 部首에 귀속된 문자가 하나도 없는 無屬部字 部首가 36개나 되며, 屬部字가 단 1개뿐인 部首도 156개나 된다고 한다. 귀속된 문자가 없거나 극소수인 部首가 과연 540개라는 部首의 숫자를 채우는 역할 이외에 部首로서의 어떠한 기능을 하는 지, 꼭 필요한 것인지에 대해 의문을 품게 된다. 許愼은 왜 이들을 독립된 部首로 세워야만 했는지, 이보다 좀 더 합리적인 다른 방법은 없었는지 라는 의문에 대해 미력이나마 의견을 보태보려고 한다. 우선 36개의 無屬部字를 대상으로 『說文解字』 部首 건립의 취지와 목적, 全書에 나타난 部首 배치의 예, 상호 간의 관계, 그리고 小篆 字形을 분석하여 他部首와의 통합이 가능한 지 여부를 타진해 보고자 한다.

Xu Shen compiled the best chinese handbook 『Shuowenjiezi』, and created a concept called radicals, with 540 radicals, all of which were attributed under the head of each part to the system He arranged the Chinese characters that were scattered and provided the convenience of the search. His purpose of making the radicals that “Separated division, unconformable division." (Separated into the number of parts, and not mixed with each other). However, if we look at the 540 radicals in the “main text", it is clear that there is no single character attributed to this radical in the radicals that the number of heads is 36. And the number of radicals is only one in 156. There are no letters attributed to it, only a small number of radicals have 540 radicals. Many people have questioned how they function and what they really need.
The purpose of this study is that why should the Xu Shen have to stand on their own independent corps, and whether or not there is any other rational way to do so?
First, he analyzed the purpose of constructing a radical of 『Shuowenjiezi』 for 36 that appeared in all the books, and the of the radical to find out the possibility of merging.
