동아시아 사회 전반에 걸친 연구에서 유학에 관한 이해는 필수불가결한 요소이다. 유학에 대한 다양한 학문적 접근과 통합적 방법론의 모색은 동아시아학에서 가장 핵심적인 연구주제라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 21세기에 들어서면서 동아시아에 대한 전 세계적 관심은 아주 뜨겁다. 한반도의 정세나 미국과 중국의 갈등이 심해지는 현황에서 동아시아를 정확히 보는 혜안이 필요한 시점이다. 이러한 관점에서 유학의 다변적 해석에 관한 연구는 동아시아학 연구자들에게 의미 있는 작업이라고 여겨진다. 다만 하나의 사상을 특정한 시대의 요구나 편의성에 따라 임의적으로 해석하고 이용하는 일은 삼가야 할 것이다. 유학은 인간이 자신의 삶을 영위해 나아가면서 필요로 한 동아시아적 복잡한 요소들이 융합되어 만들어진 보편적 가치이다. 현대사회를 살아가는 우리가 유학에 대하여 다시금 짚어보는 것은 인간이 사유할 수 있는 철학, 사학 등 무한의 영역들이 세대를 뛰어넘어 인류의 보편적 가치로 실현됨으로써 공감을 나눌 수 있기 때문이다. 다변화된 동아시아 세계에서 인간의 존재와 역할의 상실에 따른 근본적인 해결을 유학에서 찾고자 하는 것이다.

Understanding Confucianism is an indispensable element in research across East Asian societies. It is no exaggeration to say that diverse academic approaches and an integrated methodology for Confucianism are the most important research topics in East Asia. As we enter the 21st century, interest in East Asia is very high. It is time for a better understanding of East Asia in the context of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the growing tension between the U.S. and China. From this point of view, the study of multivariate interpretations of Confucianism is considered a meaningful task for East Asian researchers. However, we should refrain from interpreting and using Confucianism arbitrarily according to the needs and convenience of a certain era. Confucianism is a universal value created by the fusion of East Asian complexities that humans need to pursue their lives. The reason why we think about Confucianism in our modern society is that we can share our sympathy with the infinite areas of human-made philosophy and history beyond generations and into universal values of mankind. In the diversified East Asian world, the Confucian school aims to find a fundamental solution to the loss of human presence and role.
