1920년 이전의 엘리엇 시의 두 가지 심리적 특징은 환상과 좌절이며 여기에 원인과 과정으로 여성(성)이 깊이 개입하고 있다. 이 시기의 화자들은 여성들의 반응과 그들과의 관계에서 의해 자기를 이해하고, 스스로에 대한 가치를 매기며, 이 태도는 여성들과 관계없는 일에까지 영향을 미친다. 이들은 저항할 수 없이 여성들에게 끌리지만 예민한 자의식속에서 여성들에게 받아들여질 수 없을 것이라고 예단하며 더 이상의 관계를 추구하지 못하는 나약한 모습을 보인다. 이 같은 정체감은 화자들이 의식하고 있는 보다 근본적인 문제에 대한 접근 노력을 사전에 차단하는 효과를 보이기도 한다. 화자들이 겪는 이 같은 곤경은 당시 시인이 겪었던 성적인 욕망과 좌절, 보다 근본적으로는 시인에게 작용하는 어머니 원형과 아니마의 경쟁관계에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. 아니마의 유혹과 어머니의 세계에 머물고 싶은 충동이 충돌하는 양상이 시에 반영되는 것으로 보인다. 하지만 『황무지』를 거쳐 『재의 수요일』에 이르면 시인은 활발하게 여성성과 활발하게 교류하며 종교적 행로를 모색하게 된다. 이 글에서는 엘리엇의 초기시 몇 편에 나타난 환상과 좌절을 여성과의 관계라는 측면에서 추적해 보았다.

Fantasy and mental distress form two most outstanding psychological characteristics of Eliot’s early poems, written before the year 1920. In these two mental features are noticeably involved women and femininity: the personas in this phase are defined and dominated in their self-identity, self-evaluation, and choices of action by their relations with women characters or feminine forces. They find themselves irresistibly attracted to women and then frustrated by their imaginary rejections of their wishes for consummation, sometimes recoiling from deepened relations on their own. Personas of these poems are found to have interest and visions beyond this sexual attraction, but they show no will to step out of or beyond this women-gripped world. This dilemma seems to result from strong feelings associated with erotic desire and its frustration the poet then experienced in practical and imaginary ways. Psychologically the difficulties the personas are undergoing are from the competition between the mother and the anima, two antithetical forces competing for the young poet’s psyche. This article furthers this understandings as depicted in the following four works: “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” “Portrait of A Lady,” “Hysteria” and “Rhapsody on a Windy Night.”
