본 연구는 다산의 목민론을 중심으로 가르치는 자의 마음가짐과 자세, 그리고 교직이 나아가야 할 방향을 모색하고자 하였다. 목민의 직을 수행하는 목민자는 그 근본인 백성을 위해 존재하고[爲民], 백성을 사랑으로 길러야 하며[愛民], 백성을 두려워해야 한다[畏民]. 마찬가지로 가르치는 자로서 교사 역시 교육의 과정에서 배우는 자가 그 근본임을 명심하고, 배우는 자를 사랑하고 나아가 두려워하는 마음으로 이해하고 존중하는 목생자(牧生者)가 되어야 한다. 이러한 마음가짐으로 가르치는 자는 배우는 자들이 내적 잠재력을 제대로 발휘하도록 그 잠재력에 대한 믿음을 가지고[信] 그들의 후천적 익힘을 충분히 도와야 한다[助]. 목민자에게 백성들의 개전성(改悛性), 즉 변화 가능성에 대한 믿음이 필요하듯, 교육의 과정에서 가르치는 자에게 배우는 자의 성장 가능성에 대한 믿음과 조력이 필요한 것이다. 결국 가르치는 자는 배우는 자에 대해 ‘신뢰자’이자 ‘조력자’의 역할을 수행해야 하는 것이다. 특히 배우는 자의 개별성과 다양성을 존중하여 개개인의 자질, 처지 등을 고려하여 그에 적절한 교육적 조력이 이루어져야 할 것이다. 아울러 목민자는 반드시 먼저 자기를 닦고[修身] 이를 토대로 백성을 다스려야 하듯[治民], 목생자로서 교사 역시 우선 자기를 간단없이 성찰하고 이를 토대로 교직에 임해야 할 것이다. 결국 백성을 다스리는 목민자의 역할은 교육의 과정에서 학생을 가르치는 교사의 역할과 상통하는 것으로, 교육은 바로 목생의 과정이고 가르치는 자는 목생자이다. 특히 목민할 마음은 있으나 몸소 실행할 수 없음을 안타까워한 다산의 토로는 오늘날 목생자로서 가르치는 자에게 그 마음가짐과 아울러 실행의 중요성을 되새기게 한다.

This study sought to discover the attitude and mindset of the teacher in Dasan's theory of Mokmin (牧民, ruling the people), and the direction in which the teaching profession should move forward. The ruler of the people must exist for the people(爲民), who are the foundation of society, raise the people with love(愛民), and fear the people(畏民). Likewise, teachers should keep in mind that the learner is the root of the curriculum, and love and respect the learner with a sense of fear. A teacher must have a belief in the potential of learners and fully help them learn their acquired learning with this mindset. In the end, the teacher must act as a believer and facilitator for the learner. In particular, the individuality and diversity of the learners should be considered and appropriate educational facilitation should be given. In addition, a person who rules the people must first cultivate himself(herself) and rule the people based on this, and a person who facilitates the learner must continue to cultivate himself(herself) and educate the learner based on this. After all, the role of the ruler who rules the people is in line with the role of the teacher who facilitates learners in the course of education. Education is process of facilitating the learners, teacher is a person who Moksaeng(牧生, facilitating the learners).
