이 글의 목적은 요한 제바스티안 바흐와 그의 교회 칸타타 안에 흐르는 ‘당대’ 루터교의 신학 언어를 읽어내고, 이것이 의미하는 바를 역시 신학적인 언어로 해석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 바흐 의 ≪칸타타 75번≫, ‘주린 자는 먹을지어다’(Die Elenden sollen essen)를 분석한다. 이 작품 안 에 담긴 루터교의 교리와 메시지는 어떤 것인지, 그리고 이들은 어떤 신학적 언어로 기록되어 있 는지 파악해 나간다. 이러한 논의를 통해 주목하고자 하는 것은 ≪칸타타 75번≫에서 발견되는 두 개의 교리, 즉, ‘칭의’와 ‘십자가 신학’이고 이것의 신학적인 의미이다. 마지막으로 이 글은 루터 교를 상징하는 두 교리가 ≪칸타타 75번≫에 깊숙이 뿌리내리고 있다는 사실을 역설하면서, 이러 한 주장이 내포하는 바에 대해 질문한다.

This study attempts to explore Bach’s sacred vocal works in theological terms. In particular, by spelling out Lutheran theology crystallized in Cantata 75, ‘Die Elenden sollen essen’, I will illustrate various ways in which it figures into those works. I will also explicate the doctrine of Justification and the theology of Cross in detail, both articulated by the reformer, Martin Luther, tracing their significance and implications in Bach’s compositions. Finally, I will argue that Bach’s Lutheran cantatas can be seen as a musical sermon whose purpose lies in not only its musical realization, but also its ability to deliver theological messages to its audiences.
