19세기 무역과 식민지 확장을 위해 중국에 유입된 서양 외교관, 세관, 선교사 등은 장기간 중국 체류를 통해 얻은 식견을 바탕으로 중국 정치, 외교, 경제, 사회, 종교, 문학, 언어 등 방면에 있어 방대한 연구 성과를 내며 중국학의 기틀을 세웠다. 이때 중국의 의식주, 명절, 여가생활, 학 교, 신앙 등 중국인의 일상생활 및 사상에 대해 보고 체험한 바를 적은 ‘이야기집’도 출판되었다. 삽화나 사진과 함께 중국의 세세한 일상을 기 록한 이야기집은 재중 서양인이 중국을 쉽게 이해할 수 있게 돕는 백과 사전이자 후발 선교사나 관료를 위한 선행학습서 역할을 했다. 이야기집 은 주요 저자는 선교사이며, 이야기집의 출판은 기독교 단체와 기독교 홍보에 기여한 민영 출판사에 의해 주도 되었다. 이들은 선교사가 목표 했던 문명화 사역의 정당성을 입증하는 수단이 되는 한편, 19세기 대두 된 민속학(Folklore) 연구를 위한 풍부한 자료 출처가 되었다. 이야기집 은 19세기 서양인이 중국문화와 접촉, 충돌하며 이루어낸 시대적 산물 로, ‘식민지 전개’와 ‘선교’, 그리고 ‘민속학’의 교집합 안에 있다.

In the 19th century, Western diplomats, customs officers, and missionaries who came to China to trade and expand their colonies made extensive studies of Chinese politics, diplomacy, economics, society, religion, literature, and language based on their knowledge gained during their long stays in China, laying the foundation for Chinese studies. At the same time, ‘narrative collections’ were published in which they wrote about what they saw and experienced about the daily life and ideas of the Chinese people, such as rituals, holidays, leisure, schools, and beliefs. Accompanied by illustrations and photographs, the narratives, which recorded the details of Chinese daily life, served as an encyclopedia to help Westerners in China understand China and as a primer for later missionaries and officials. The primary authors of the narratives were missionaries, and their publication was driven by Christian organizations and private publishers who served to promote Christianity. They became a means of legitimizing the civilizing work that missionaries aimed to do, and a rich source of material for the study of folklore that emerged in the 19th century.
