본 연구는 에마뉘엘 레비나스의 이론을 바탕으로 찰스 디킨스의 􋺷올리버 트 위스트􋺸에 나타난 얼굴, 타자, 종교성을 분석한다. 고아로 태어난 올리버는 작 업장에서의 노동과 굶주림, 런던의 범죄 조직 페이긴 일당으로부터 고난을 당하 지만 이겨내며, 낸시, 브라운로우 씨, 그리고 밀리 씨를 통해 공감과 도움을 받 는다. 낸시는 자신의 삶과 유사한 올리버의 고통에 공감하며 그를 돕고 자신의 죄를 회개한다. 그들의 연민과 행동은 올리버의 개인적 성장을 이끈다. 그를 둘 러싼 악의적 인물들과 긍정적 영향을 미치는 이들 사이에서 올리버는 도덕적 가치를 배우고 기도를 통해 살아갈 힘을 얻는다. 에마뉘엘 레비나스는 타자의 얼굴이 ‘신의 계시’라고 언급했다. 이러한 타자에 대한 공감과 행동, 그리고 일 상의 기도는 급변하는 현대사회를 살아가는 현대인에게 필수적인 요소라 할 수 있다.

This study aims to examine the other, face, and religiosity in Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist based on Emmanuel Levianas’s theory. Born as an orphan, Oliveran endures the hardships of life in the workhouse, such as hard work and hunger. Oliver also suffers at the hands of Fagin’s London’s criminal underworld gang, yet receives empathy and aid through Nancy, Mr. Brownlow, and Mr. Milie. Nancy, in particular, empathizes with his suffering, because of shared similarities with her own life. Nancy helps Oliver and repents for her own sins. Her compassion and actions guide Oliver toward his personal growth. Through the evil figures and at the same time those exerting positive influences surrounding him, Oliver learns moral values and gains the strength to live through prayer. Emmanuel Levinas mentioned that the face of the other is ‘a revelation of God’. This empathy and action toward others, along with daily prayer, can be said to be essential for modern people living in the era of a rapidly changing society.
