이 글은 진 리스(Jean Rhys)의 􋺷굿 모닝, 미드나잇(Good Morning, Midnight)􋺸 을 분석함으로써 여성이 도시 공간 속에서 어떻게 억압되고 소외되어 있는지를 논의하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 모더니즘의 기원은 이성이 가진 힘을 통해 자유 와 해방을 추구했던 계몽주의로 거슬러 올라갈 수 있다. 또한 18세기 영국에서 자본주의와 소비주의가 등장하고 발전함에 따라, 여성은 상품 시장에서 일종의 능동성을 지닌 주체가 되었다. 􋺷굿 모닝, 미드나잇􋺸의 여주인공은 자본주의 시 장에서 능동적인 주체로 묘사되지만, 여전히 억압과 착취를 당한다. 도시 공간 속 여성성의 재현은 성별, 시장, 모더니즘이라는 여러 겹의 층위에 의해 형성된 다. 이 논문은 사샤(Sasha)가 도시 공간 속에서 역사적, 정치적, 사회적 맥락(파 시즘, 식민주의, 가부장제, 경제, 계급)을 통해 어떻게 고통받는지를 보여주며, 그녀가 소비주의, 상품, 돈이라는 개념과 연관되어 정치적, 역사적 맥락 속에서 어떻게 희생자로 묘사되는지를 분석한다. 리스는 모더니즘 안에서 젠더와 시장 의 권력 정치학을 비판적으로 탐구한다.

This article aims to discuss how the woman, Sasha, is described as oppressed and alienated in urban spaces by investigating Jean Rhys’s Good Morning, Midnight. The origin of modernism may be traced back to the Enlightenment which demonstrates the freedom and emancipation through the power of reason. Furthermore, when capitalism and consumerism emerged and developed during the 18th Century in Britain, the women had become a kind of subject in the markets of the commodities. Although the heroine in GMM is described as an active agent in the capitalistic market, she is still oppressed and exploited. The representation of femininity within the urban space is produced by multiple layers, gender, market and modernism. This paper will show how Sasha suffers in the urban space in historical, political and social contexts (fascism, colonialism, patriarchy, economy and class); how she is represented as a victim in terms of consumerism, commodity and money, which are associated with political and historical contexts. Rhys examines critically the power politics of gender and market within Modernism.
