This study was investigated the seasonal occurrence of Metcalfe pruinosa (Say) in Chungbuk province and established the optimal control timing. Population densities of nymph and adults were investigated and egg hatching period and oviposition period was examined from three locations (Cheongwon, Jincheon, Eumseong area). Egg hatching period was investigated. The first day of egg hatching observed on May 25, the day of peak egg hatching was on May 29, and the perfect accumulative egg hatching ratio was on Jun. 13. Oviposition period of M. pruinosa female was observed the cut branch (cut within 10 cm length, 1 cm dia.) of oak tree, an althea, and an acacia under stereoscope. The first oviposition was observed at Jul. 28 and continually increased until late-Sept. with sharply increased at mid-Aug. Population density of M. pruinosa nymph was observed the cut branch (cut within 30 cm length, 1 cm dia.) of oak tree, an althea, an acacia, and pear tree. Population density began decreased showing after highest density with 25.3 (Jul. 1). The adult was first appeared at Jul. 11 and showed highest population density with 13.1 (Aug. 4) and then continuously decreased. To control M. pruinosa at pear orchard, optimal control timing for nymph was judged from Jun. 13 to Jul. 2, because of its small size of body and exuviae, low damaging by honeydew producing, low wax materials produced. Second control timing was judged at early Aug., when the adult invading to the pear orchard from near forest and the period before oviposition. The control agents for M. pruinosa were not yet registered, but will be anticipated to register the chemicals such as penitrothion WP, acetamiprid WP, dinotefuran WP, lambda cyhalothrin, thiamethoxam SP in 2012.

Immunotherapeutic approaches using agonist antibodies or fusion proteins of immunomodulatory molecules significantly inhibit tumor growth and boost cell-mediated immunity. We isolated mRNA from previously reported 1D4 hybridoma cells and amplified the variable regions of the heavy chain (VH) and light chain (VL) genes using reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Using a linker, the amplified sequences for the heavy and light chains were each connected to the sequence for a single polypeptide chain that was designed to be expressed. VL and VH fragments were cloned into the pOptiVEC-TOPO vector containing the human CH2-CH3 fragment. Then, 293T cells were transfected with the 1D4 single-chain Fv-Fc (scFv-Fc) constructs. A549 cells were used for presentation of the 1D4 antigen. Flow cytometry was performed for analysis of the secreted 1D4 scFv-Fc constructs. The DNA sequence of 1D4 scFv-Fc was obtained. The 1D4 scFv-Fc constructs were expressed by the transfected 293T cells and secreted into the culture medium. The immunoreactivity of the secreted scFv-Fc construct was lower than that of the murine 1D4 antibody for A549 cells. A 1D4 scFv-Fc construct for immunotherapy was developed.

The emulsion and micro-encapsuled formulation from three essential oils, cassia, thyme white and lemon grass were tested for their insecticidal activities against Lycoriella ingenua (Dufour) adults at 0.3% concentration. As a result, the micro-encapsules than emulsion formulation was confirmed to show greater activity. Based on this result, insecticidal activities at several levels of concentration were examined, resulting in more than 80% insecticidal activity after 30 minutes at 0.6% level of cassia formulation. And also, insecticidal activity of three oil-based micro-encapsuled formulations lasted for up to 12 hours at 0.9% concentration. The main ingredients derived from three essential oils were evaluated on the insecticidal activity against Lycoriella ingenua. As a result, in case of thymol from thyme white, it showed more than 80% mortality after over 30 minutes at 0.25%, and in cinnamic aldehyde and citral, exhibited 88% and 82% mortality after 30 minutes at the 0.5% level, respectively. These three compounds were examined for whether the insecticidal activity was maintained depending on being over time. In case of thymol, it maintained good insecticidal activity against Lycoriella ingenua at 0.5% level until 120 hours, while cinnamic aldehyde and citral showed lower activity after 12 hours.

The larvicidal activity of 104 plant essential oils and their major constituents against third instar larvae of mushroom fly Camptomyia corticalis was examined using a vapor-phase mortality bioassay. Results were compared with those of the conventional insecticides dichlorvos. Over ten plant essential oils exhibited showed more than 90% mortality. At a rate of 0.2 mg/cm3 air, pulegone, and thujone, exhibited 100% morality whereas camphor, 1,8-cineole, α-pinene, thymol and menthol showed 90% mortality at 0.6 mg/cm3 air. Global efforts to reduce the level of highly toxic synthetic insecticides in the agricultural environment justify further studies on the essential oils and their constituents described as potential insecticides for the control of the mushroom fly as fumigants with contact action.

The American house dust mite, Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes, is the most important factor of allergic diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, rhinitis, and asthma. The protein-denaturing activity of nerolidol (1), chrysin (2), and spathulenol (3) identified in the Brazilian propolis against D. farinae was evaluated using SDS-PAGE and dot-blot immunoassay. Results were compared with those of the currently available dust mite protein-denaturing agent tannic acid. SDS-PAGE showed that application of test compounds and tannic acid (100 μg each) caused complete disappearance of D. farinae protein bands. In a dot-blot immunoassay, test compounds and tannic acid (100 μg each) strongly inhibited the IgE-binding reactivity to D. farinae protein of a highly mite-sensitive asthmatic patient. The Brazilian propolis constituents described merit further study as potential dust mite-allergen denaturants for protection from humans from various diseases caused by house dust mites.

The toxicity of imperatorin (1) and osthol (2) identified in Cnidium monnieri seed and four structurally related compounds to third instar larvae of insecticidesusceptible (KS-CP strain) and field-collected (DJ-CP colony) of Culex pipiens pallens was examined. Results were compared with those of to conventional mosquito larvicide, fenitrothion and temephos. Based on 24-h LC50 values, imperatorin was 1.9, 3.7, 4.2, 12.4, and 15.1 times more toxic than isopimpinellin, isoimperatorin, osthole, xanthotoxin, and bergapten against KS-CP larvae, respectively. Overall, these compounds were less toxic than either fenitrothion or temephos. However, these compounds did not differ in toxicity against larvae from the two Culex strains, even though the DJ-CP larvae exhibited high levels of resistance α-cypermethrin, deltamethrin, chlorpyrifos, fenthion, and chlorfenapyr (resistance ratio, 94-1179). This finding indicates that the isolated compounds and the pyrethroid, organophosphorus, and pyrrole insecticides do not share a common mode of action or elicit cross-resistance.

The purpose of this study is investigation of understanding levels and utilities of the earth science educational terms written by Chinese characters. Kim and Koh (2003)'s analysis of the earth science concerned vocabularies in science textbooks for 3rd to 6th grades of elementary school. In the books, earth region vocabularies were derived from 70% to 80% words of Chinese, below 10% of pure Korean, and other languages. Jeong et al.(2007) analyzed 9th grade(middle school grade of the Korea) students' understanding about the earth science terms written by Chinese characters depending on their learning style and attitudes toward science. They selected the eight students, the students were judged middle level of science. Students were divided into four groups: verbal-high attitude toward science, verbal-low attitude toward science, visual-high attitude toward science, and visual-low attitude toward science learners. Researchers had three types of questionnaires including Korean character type, picture type, and Korean and Chinese characters type to how developing the students' understanding about the earth science terms written by Chinese characters. The results of data indicated that the 9th grades students' understanding showed no significant difference by their different learning style, and yet demonstrated higher level of understanding in Korean and Chinese characters type questionnaire rather than Korean characters type only or picture type. On the other hand, the level of students’ understanding both in Korean characters type and picture type was equal. In conclusion, it seems more effective learning earth science terms written by Chinese characters when they were provided with both Korean and Chinese characters.Jeong et al.(2007) analyzed 10th grade students’ understanding level about earth science terms written in Chinese characters according to learners’ characteristic. In older to investigate the responses followed their various characteristics, first of all, proper scientific terms were selected, and then corresponding questions about them were offered as subjects, which consisted of Korean characters type, picture type, and Korean and Chinese characters type. During paper test and interview, the questions were given to fifteen students from general high school. The results of the study are as follows; Students in formal operation level and field independency answered very well and also the terms of Chinese characters type and picture type improved the students' understanding and memorization. Generally, Chinese characters have more positive influence on their learning than negative. Therefore, in general, it seems that more effective to explain the sound and meaning of terms in detail. In addition to give learners enough time to draw a picture about each terms by themselves when scientific terms are delivered to students in Chinese characters in class.Lee et al,(2002) investigated that whether 11th grades students with more knowledge of Chinese Character get higher academic adaptability in inquiry activities using the concept and understanding level of earth science terms than the students with less knowledge of Chinese Character. They analyze which relationship exist between two groups. The students with more Chinese Character knowledge show high understanding level and high corrected answer rate in inquiry questions. However, the students with little knowledge also high corrected answer rate in inquiry question, but there is only a little difference on the level of concept understanding for earth science education is linearly connected from elementary school to high school. In a prior study, researchers reported that Chinese Character learning will help understanding concept better but the lack of knowledge about Chinese Character will not be obstacle to understand the concepts in earth science, futhermore to do inquiry activities using the concept. Under the college education, however, science terms written by Chinese characters in science major tend to compare with the highschool abruptly. In order to get a complete concepts of new science terms, learning of the Chinese characters is needed. In conclusion, Chinese Characters learning will help understand new knowledge in college education and is very efficient at translation of science literatures written by foreign language without confusion.

In the previous study, the plant essential oils such as clove bud , thyme white and garlic oils gave potent toxicity with the range of 1.5 to 4.5×10-3 ul cm-3 of LC50 values against Bemisia tabaci. Based on the bio-assay results, three plant essential oils(clove bud, thyme white and garlic) were applied to 30% emulsion type. The 100, 200 and 400 fold dilution of these emulsions was showed mild toxicity under port scale treatment against Q biotype. At each fold dilution, clove bud showed 44, 26 and 14%, and thyme white produced 44, 39 and 27%, respectively. Of garlic emulsion, its toxicity was evaluated with 27, 26 and 11%, respectively. But, in case of clove bud and thyme white mixture, their toxicity was more good under the mixture than under the single treatment. Mixture with clove bud 200 fold dilution adding to thyme white 200 fold dilution showed potent activity with 86% mortality. And also 200 adding to 400, and 400 to 400 exhibited 61%, 76%, respectively. These essential oil mixtures showed similar strong toxicity against B biotype under port scale test. In particular, the mixture with clove bud 200 fold dilution adding to thyme white 200 fold dilution showed the highest synergistic effect. Toxicity to plants, except the 100 fold dilution of these emulsions was not observed.

The present study investigated the role of ERK in the onset of mechanical and cold allodynia in a rat model of compression of the trigeminal ganglion by examining changes in the air-puff thresholds and number of scratches following the intracisternal injection of PD98059, a MEK inhibitor. Male Sprague Dawley rats weighing between 250 and 260 g were used. Under anesthesia, the rats were mounted onto a stereotaxic frame and received 4% agar (10μℓ) solution to compress the trigeminal ganglion. In the control group, the animals were given a sham operation without the application of agar. Changes in behavior were examined at 3 days before and at 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 30, and 40 days after surgery. Compression of the trigeminal ganglion significantly decreased the air-puff thresholds. Mechanical allodynia was established within 3 days and persisted over postoperative day 24. To evaluate cold allodynia, nociceptive scratching behavior was monitored after acetone application on the vibrissa pad of the rats. Compression of the trigeminal ganglion was found to produce significant cold allodynia, which persisted for more than 40 days after surgery. On postoperative day 14, the intracisternal administration of 1 μg or 10 μg of PD98059 in the rat model significantly decreased the air-puff thresholds on both the ipsilateral and contralateral side. The intracisternal administration of 10 μg of PD98059 also significantly alleviated the cold allodynia, compared with the vehicle-treated group. These results suggest that central ERK plays an important role in the development of mechanical and cold allodynia in rats with compression of the trigeminal ganglion and that a targeted blockade of this pathway is a potential future treatment strategy for trigeminal neuralgia-like nociception.

The numerical analysis by using CFX 11.0 commercial code was done for proper design of the heat exchanger. The present experimental studies were also conducted to investigate the effects of circulating solid particles on the characteristics of fluid flow, heat transfer and cleaning effect in the fluidized bed vertical shell and tube type heat exchanger with counterflow, at which a variety of solid particles such as glass (3 mmΦ), aluminum (2~3 mm Φ), steel (2~2.5 mmΦ), copper (2.5 mmΦ) and sand (2~4 mmΦ) were used in the fluidized bed with a smooth tube. Seven different solid particles have the same volume, and the effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle diameter, materials and geometry were investigated. The present experimental and numerical results showed that the flow velocity range for collision of particles to the tube wall was higher with heavier density solid particles, and the increase in heat transfer was in the order of sand, copper, steel, aluminum, and glass. This behavior might be attributed to the parameters such as surface roughness or particle heat capacity.

Cutaneous vasculitis is an inflammatory necrotizing disease of the blood vessel walls. In most cases, the etiology is due to immune-complex disease from type III hypersensitivity. Clinical signs include swelling, erythema, purpura, erythematous plaques, ulceration, and necrosis. Clinical lesions may be localized to distal extremities or areas of less extensive collateral circulation. In this case, history, physical examination, laboratory findings, cytology, histopathologic examination, and immunohistochemistry might aid in differentiation of a clinically similar disease. Consequently, this case was diagnosed as cutaneous vasculitis and treated with ointment containing corticosteroid and antibiotics over a period of two weeks. After treatment, all of the clinical lesions had disappeared.

Five field-collected populations (TR-CP, UR-CP, JR-CP, GR-CP, and BR-CP colonies) of northern house mosquito, Culex pipiens pallens, identified by polymer chain reaction (PCR) were tested for susceptibility to 10 different insecticides by direct-contact mortality bioassay in comparison with an insecticide-susceptible KS-CP strain. Marked regional variations of insecticide susceptibility were observed. Extremely high to high levels of resistance were obtained: bifenthrin, resistance ratio (RR) = 1–520; β-cyfluthrin, RR = 16–397; α -cypermethrin, RR = 9–343; deltamethrin, RR = 1–40; etofenprox, RR = 2–42; permethrin, RR = 2–12; chlorpyrifos, RR = 2–675; fenitrothion, RR = 0.5–364; and fenthion, RR = 2–360. All of the colonies were susceptible to one or more of the insecticides examined. These results indicate that careful selection and rotational use of these insecticides should result in continued satisfactory control against field populations of northern house mosquito.

Electroantennogram techniques (EAGs) were employed to record olfactory responses in the antennae of the adult female stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera: Muscidae), to Zanthoxylum piperitum pericarp steam distillate (ZP-SD), Z. armatum seed oil (ZA-SO) and their 29 volatile constituents alone as well as binary mixture of the ZP-SD and ZA-SO with 1-octen-3-ol. The electrophysiological responses of the test materials were compared with those of DEET and 1-octen-3-ol. At concentration of 10-1 (v/v) in mineral oil, ZP-SD, ZA-SO, and all volatiles elicited EAG responses in the fly antennae except for DEET, which is extremely low volatile. ZP-SD, ZA-SO, and some of the test volatiles elicited EAG responses rather lower than 1-octen-3-ol, which showed vapor phase repellency and toxicity to the fly in our previous behavioral research. This suggests that the stable fly possesses olfactory receptor neurons responding to given repellent compounds per se. In binary mixture with 1-octen-3-ol at concentration of 10-1, ZP-SD and ZA-SO elicited 16±0.55 and 18±0.63 mV while ZP-SD, ZA-SO, and 1-octen-3-ol alone elicited responses of 14±0.45, 15.8±0.37 and 16.2±0.58 mV, respectively. Among the volatile compounds, terpinen- 4-ol, β-myrcene, α-phellanderene, citronellal, and limonene oxide elicited 80 – 96% relative EAG amplitude compared to 1-octen-3-ol as a reference (100%). Based on structure-activity relationships, constituents having aldehyde moiety elicited bigger EAG responses than those of alcohol or ether one. The perception in the fly antenna to plant volatile compounds exhibited complicated patterns of olfactory responses. Current and future directions of this study on sensory processing mechanisms underlying repellent behaviors will be discussed.

The Organophosphorus pesticides are widely used for agricultural and domestic purposes due to their relatively low persistence in the environment. Chlorpyrifos-methyl (CM) is used at a rate of over 14 million pounds per year in US agriculture, ranking it as the second most heavily used pesticide. This study aimed at isolating bacteria from soil and determining their ability to degrade CM and identify the intermediates in culture broth. Bacteria capable of degrading CM was isolated by enrichment culture. Chryseobacterium sp. strain KR200 degraded CM up to 91.58% in 7days. Studies with CM in liquid culture of Chryseobacterium sp. strain KR200 demonstrated that the isolate hydrolyzed CM to 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol, and utilized this compound for growth and energy. We performed SDS-PAGE and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and identified proteins whose expression pattern is affected by CM using mass spectrometry. The results revealed various proteins that can be grouped according to their respective cellular function. These results highlight the potential of this bacterium to be used in the clean up of contaminated pesticide waste in the environment.
