Many countries have used nuclear power to generate electricity. Uranium-235, which is used as fuel in nuclear power plants, produces many fission products. Among them, iodine-129 is problematic due to its long half-life (1.57×107 years) and high diffusivity in the environment. If it is released into the environment without any treatment, it could have a major impact on humans and ecosystems. Therefore, it must be treated into a stable form through capture and solidification. Iodine can be captured in the form of AgI through silver-loaded zeolite filters in off-gas treatment processes. However, AgI could be decomposed in the reducing atmosphere of groundwater, so it must be converted into a stable form. In this study, Al2O3, Bi2O3, PbO, V2O5, MoO3, or WO3 were added to the iodine solidification matrix, AgI-Ag2O-TeO2 glass. The glass precursors were mixed to the appropriate composition and placed in an alumina crucible. After heat treatment at 800°C for 1 hour, the melt was quenched in a carbon crucible. The leaching behavior and thermal properties of the glass samples were evaluated. The PCT-A test for leaching evaluation showed that the normalized releases of all elements were below 2 g/m2, which satisfied the U.S. glass wasteform leaching regulations. Diffrential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was performed to evaluate the thermal properties of all glass samples. The addition of MoO3 or WO3 to the AgI-Ag2O-TeO2 glass increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) and crystallization temperature (Tc) while maintaining the glass stability. The similar relative electro-static filed values of MoO3, and WO3 which are approxibately three times that of the glass network former TeO2, could provide sufficient force to the TeO2 interacting with the non-bridging oxygen forming Te-O-M (M=V, Mo, W) links. The high electrostatic forces of Mo and W increased the glass network cohension and prevented the crystallization of the glass.

Heat-generating nuclides such as Cs-137 and Sr-90 should be separated from spent nuclear fuel to reduce the short-term thermal load on the repository facility. In particular, Sr-90 must be separated because its decay process generates high temperatures. Recently, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KEARI) has been developing a waste burden minimization technology to reduce the environmental burden resulting from the disposal of spent nuclear fuel and maximize the utilization of the disposal facility. The technology incorporates a nuclide management process that maximizes disposal efficiency by selectively separating and accumulating key nuclides from spent nuclear fuel, such as Cs, Sr, I, TRU/RE, and Tc/Se. Sr nuclides dissolve in the chloride phase during the chlorination process of spent nuclear fuel and are recovered as carbonate or oxide through reactive distillation or reactive crystallization. Due to their chemical similarity, Ba nuclides are recovered along with Sr nuclides during this process. In this study, we prepared a ceramic waste form for group II nuclides, Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1), using the solid-state reaction method, taking into account the different ratios of Sr/Ba nuclides produced during the nuclide management process. Regardless of the Sr/Ba ratio, the established waste form fabrication process was able to produce a stable waste form. Physicochemical properties, including leaching and thermal properties, were evaluated to determine the stability of group II waste forms. In addition, the radiological properties of waste forms of Ba(x)Sr(1-x)TiO3 with varying Sr/Ba ratios were evaluated. These results provided fundamental data for the long-term storage and management of waste forms containing group II nuclides.

As regulations on carbon emissions increase, the interest in renewable energy is also increasing. However, the efficiency of renewable energy generation is highly low and has limitations in replacing existing energy consumption. In terms of this view, nuclear power generation is highlighted because it has the advantage of not emitting carbon. And accordingly, the amount of spent nuclear fuel is going to increase naturally in the future. Therefore, it will be important to obtain the reliability of containers for transporting safely and storing spent nuclear fuel. In this study, a method for verifying the integrity and airtightness of a metal cask for the safe transportation and storage of spent nuclear fuel was studied. Non-destructive testing, thermal stability, leakage stability, and neutron shielding were demonstrated, and as a result, suitable quality for loading spent nuclear fuel could be obtained. Furthermore, it is meaningful in that it has secured manufacturing technology that can be directly applied to industrial field by verifying actual products.

To improve the safety of nuclear fuel, research on the advanced nuclear fuel (UO2) by adding various trace elements is being conducted. For example, the addition of metals such as Mo, Cr can improve the thermal conductivity of nuclear fuel, minimizing the diffusion of fission products. Trace metal oxide additives (SiO2, Cr2O3, Al2O3, etc.) can suppress the release of fission gases. In general, complete dissolution of the fuel sample is required for chemical analysis to determine its elemental compositions. Among widely used metal oxide additives, aluminum oxide is difficult to dissolve in nitric acid due to its excellent thermal and chemical stability. In this study, we investigated on different chemical dissolution methods by applying a microwave digestion system under various acid solutions. We confirmed the validity of the digestion method by carrying out trace element analysis using an Inductively-Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES).

Recently, the spent fuel pools withdrawn from nuclear power plants in Korea have been saturated. Therefore, specific regulations on the management of spent fuel pools, such as transportation and intermediate storage are needed. The burnup history is directly related to the management of spent nuclear fuel. This is because the decision to handle nuclear fuel may vary depending on the initial concentration of nuclear fuel, the degree to which nuclear fuel is irradiated and radioisotope nuclides are decayed, and the cooling state in the spent nuclear fuel storage tank. The purpose of this study is to determine the burnup of fuel based on the value obtained by scanning the surface of spent nuclear fuel through a neutron detector. Conversely, a database of neutron signals that scan bundles of spent nuclear fuel with an instrument with an already identified combustion history needs to be completed. First of all, the correlation between burnup history and nuclides was identified in previous studies. By setting the burnup history as the input value in the ORIGEN-ARP code, it was possible to identify the radioactive isotopes remaining in the bundle of nuclear fuel. Neutrons can finally be measured based on the amount of nuclide inventory that constitutes spent nuclear fuel. Through MCNP, the neutron detector was simulated and signals were measured to confirm how it correlates with the previously acquired burnup history database. In addition, the M (sub-critical multiplication) value, which is essential for neutron measurement, was checked to confirm the degree to which additional neutrons were generated in spent nuclear fuel in a subcritical state. The target nuclear fuel assembly was CE16×16, WH14×14, and WH17×17, which confirmed the correlation (1) between burnup, enrichment, and cooling time with the previous research topic, TNSI (Total neutron source intensity). 􀜤􀜷􁈺􀜩􀜹􀝀/􀜯􀜶􀜷􁈻 = 0.83􁈺􀜵􀯇􁈻􀬴.􀬶􀬷􀬼 ∙ 􁈺􀜫􀜧􁈻􀬴.􀬸􀬺􀬶􀬻 ∙ 􀝁􀬴.􀬴􀬴􀬼􀬷∙􀯧 􁈺1􁈻 A neutron signal will be obtained from the case according to each burnup history constituting this database. In particular, PAR=SF, a function that calculates the production amount of the fission product, was used. To confirm the computational logic of SF, it was confirmed whether a reasonable calculation was made by calculating with a nuclide spectrum.

Given the limited terrestrial reserves of uranium (about 4.6 million tons), exploring alternative resources is essential to ensure the long-term supply and sustainability of nuclear energy. Uranium extraction from seawater (UES) is a potential solution to this issue since the amount of uranium dissolved in seawater (about 4.5 billion tons) is approximately 1000 times that of terrestrial reserves. However, the ultra-low concentration of uranium in seawater (about 3.3 ppb) makes it a challenging task to make UES economically feasible. This paper provides an overview of the current status of UES technology, which has evolved over the past seven decades. Starting from inorganic adsorbents such as hydrous titanium oxide in the 1960s, amidoxime-based fibrous adsorbents gained the most attention until the early 2010s due to their ease of deployment in actual seawater conditions and high affinity for uranium. Nowadays, research on organic adsorbents with microstructures is prevailing due to their ability to easily control surface area and compositions. In addition, this study identifies the key issues that need to be addressed to make UES technology economically viable.

Background: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model, created by the World Health Organization, provides a theoretical framework that can be applied in the diagnosis and treatment of various disorders. Objects: Our research purposed to ascertain the relationship between structure/function, activity, and participation domain variables of the ICF and pain, pain-associated disability, activities of daily living (ADL), and quality of life in patients with chronic low back pain (LBP). Methods: Two-hundred patients with chronic LBP (mean age: 35.5 ± 8.8 years, females, n = 40) were recruited from hospital and community settings. We evaluated the body structure/ function domain variable using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and Roland–Morris disability (RMD) questionnaire. To evaluate the activity domain variable, we used the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale (QBDS). For clinical outcome measures, we used Short-form 12 (SF-12). Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to ascertain the relationships among the variables (p < 0.05). All the participants with LBP received 30 minutes of conventional physical therapy 3 days/week for 4 weeks. Results: There were significant correlations between the body structure/function domain (NPRS and RMD questionnaire), activity domain (ODI and QBDS), and participation domain variables (SF-12), rending from pre-intervention (r = –0.723 to 0.783) and postintervention (r = –0.742 to 0.757, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The identification of a significant difference between these domain variables point to important relationships between pain, disability, performance of ADL, and quality in participants with LBP.

This study aimed to identify and characterize lactic acid bacteria strains with antimicrobial activity against Proteus mirabilis, a gram-negative bacterium associated with Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease, and nosocomial infections. Among the 987 lactic acid bacteria strains isolated from various sources, strain no. CHK903 showed high antimicrobial activity against P. mirabilis. Phylogenetic tree analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene and scanning electron microscope analysis identified the selected strain as the rod-shaped Weissella cibaria. The culture supernatants of W. cibaria CHK903 showed antimicrobial activity against some pathogens. Two antimicrobial compounds with molecular weights 189 and 365 Da were partially purified from the culture supernatants of W. cibaria CHK903 using Biogel P2 gel permeation column chromatography. The culture supernatants of W. cibaria CHK903 also showed significant antibiofilm properties, inhibiting biofilm formation by 90% and removing pre-formed biofilms by 60%. These findings suggest the potential therapeutic use of W. cibaria CHK903 as a natural antimicrobial against P. mirabilis-related infections.
