This study aims to examine the distribution of English unstressed pronouns, i.e., unstressed personal pronouns. English unstressed pronouns sometimes have a unique distribution different from their referential counterparts in phrasal-verb constructions, dative constructions, subject-verb inversed sentences, etc. This study shows that their unique distribution is due to the two properties that they have. One is that they are old in information structure, thus they choose to come earlier if possible in a sentence. The other is that they are clitic in that they are phonologically bound to their preceding Case assigner.

Jeong - s il Song . 2002. T he Struc ture of Eng lish Imperativ e s . S t ud ie s in M od e rn Gramma r 27, 57 - 76 . English imperatives have idiosyncracies that we cannot find in the other types of sentences . First , they usually have covert subjects and always take bare verbs . Second, they never undergo verb raising, that is, even if they have an auxiliary be or have, they need do- support . Third, when they have the overt subject you, the idiosyncracy is more peculiar : the only word order allowed is (Don 't) y ou V X . This study explains the first idiosyncracy by the fact that English imperatives are tenseless . Being tenseless requires no EPP effect, thus allowing covert subject s. Being tenseless also allows bare verbs. The second idiosyncracy is explained by assuming that the auxiliaries be and have, when they are used in the imperative, come to have some meaning related with action. This action- related meaning is incorporated structurally into ActP, a new shell structure right over v/VP . The third idiosyncracy is explained by assuming that the subject , overt or covert, is realized in the Spec of ActP.

Jeongsil Song. 2001. Auxiliary Do. Studies in Modern Grammar 23, 75-93. This study discusses the distribution of the auxiliary do in the framework of the Minimalist Program. It is generally assumed that the auxiliary do appears in the context where Infl is not allowed to attach to a verbal element, that is, Infl is stranded. But how the context results doesn`t seem to have been clarified yet except a few typical cases such as negative and interrogative sentences. The auxiliary do also appear emphatic, imperative and VP-ellipsis sentences. Particularly in case of the imperative, the context seems quite difficult to describe. All the Infl-stranding contexts should be explained in the same manner. This study does that as follows. The emphatic sentence needs do when Aff, which is the emphatic morpheme appearing in the same position as not, blocks the covert raising of the main verb. The VP-ellipsis sentence needs do when the ellipsis leaves I stranded. The imperative needs do when negative or emphatic, regardless of auxiliary be or have appearing. This is because the auxiliary has some meaning and thus is not allowed to raise. The inverted ordering Don`t you - in the imperative is due to its lack of the EPP effect.

Song Jeong-Sil. 1998. The Structure of VP. Studies in Modern Grammar 14, 27-46. The purpose of this paper is to show what the structure of VP should be like in the framework of minimalism. This paper suggests that the structure of VP at the time the selected arguments are merged be like [vP Agent [v´ v [VP Non-Theme [V´ V Theme]]]]. This paper also suggests that all the DP arguments move overtly to the relevant functional categories for the checking of their case feature. For this case checking, AgrOiP(for Objective Case) and AgrOP(for Inherent Case) are set up between vP and VP. The evidence in support of this analysis is shown in the discussion of various constructions such as dative, ergative, non-accusative, verb-particle, psych-verb, and expletive constructions.

Jeong-sil Song. 1997. Non-Argument XPs. Studies in Modern Grammatical Theories 10: 1-20. The main purpose of this study is to argue for the following points concerning English non-argument XPs. First, they all have the structure of XP in which one and only one argument position is not saturated. Second, they are all adjoined to an X`, modifying the X`. Third, some of them also function as a secondary predicate of the DP in the Spec of the XP. This study adopts the hypotheses of XP-internal Subject, Split Infl, and Split VP with some modification.
