In this study, the amount of abrasive wear was predicted effectively by FE simulation and experiment regarding the material and shape of the abrasive. In order to calculate numerically the amount of wear using the Archard wear equation, the normal load between the abrasive and the polyurethane was calculated by FE simulation. The sliding distance can be calculated according to the working conditions, and the hardness of the polyurethane is a known value. The wear coefficient K was calculated inversely by experimental measurement of the wear amount according to the working conditions of the abrasive. In order to verify the proposed calculation method, the wear amount was calculated by using the Archard wear equation by applying the calculated wear coefficient K with regard to arbitrary working conditions. The deviation between the proposed calculation results and the experimental results was within 10%. When the wear coefficient K is calculated by using the proposed method, the wear amount can be estimated. In addition, it was found that the change of the vertical load value concerning penetration depth was the main factor for determining wear amount.

PURPOSES: As pavement generally provides service shorter than an expected life cycle, maintenance cost increases gradually. In order to help extending the service life and reduce maintenance cost, a new multi-functional composite pavement system is being developed in Korea. METHODS: This study is a part to develop the multi-functional composite pavement and is to investigate the mechanical performances of fiber-reinforced lean concrete for pavement subbase. The inherent problem of fiber reinforced concrete is dispersion of fibers in concrete mix. This study additionally evaluated fiber dispersion characteristics with respect to different fiber types. RESULTS: From the test results, the compressive strengths of the concretes satisfied the required limit of 5MPa at 7days. The standard deviation of the measured number of fibers were lower in the order of nylon, steel fiber and polypropylene. CONCLUSIONS: Reject ash was shown to be satisfactory as a replacement material to Portland cement in lean concrete base. The fiber volume fraction is suggested to be 0.4% even though the fracture toughness did not vary significantly with respect to fiber types. However, fracture energy absorbed up to complete failure increased with the increased fiber volume fraction increment.

PURPOSES: This study is to investigate the mechanical performance of the fiber reinforced lean concrete with respect to different types of fibers. METHODS: Increased vehicle weight and other causes from the exposed conditions have accelerated the deteriorations of road pavement. A new multi-functional composite pavement system is being developed recently in order to extend service life and upgrade the pavement. A variety of tests were conducted before and after hardening of the concrete. RESULTS: From the test results, it was found that the use of different types of fibers did not affect the compressive strength development. This might be due to the inherent property of the lean concrete. When steel fibers were used relatively greater flexural strength and flexural fracture toughness were developed. Also addition of fly ash by replacing a part of Portland cement the fracture toughness was slightly increased. CONCLUSIONS: It has been known that the addition of fibers and use of mineral admixture can be positively considered in the development of multi-functional composite pavement system as its required mechanical performance is obtained.

This study is to investigate and analyze the correlation of carbonation according to strength of concrete members for bridge in marine enviroment. Also depth of carbonation according to age for 100 years is estimated by carbonation rate coefficient. As a result of the measurement, it was found that the depth of carbonation decreases with increasing strength. This is because it is considered that water-cement ratio and amount of unit cement are influenced by the concrete mixing. Also, It is anticipated that rebar corrosion due to carbonation will not occur in concrete members.

Recent climate change has led to fluctuations in agricultural production, and as a result national food supply has become an important strategic factor in economic policy. As such, in this study, panel data was collected to analyze the effects of seven meteorological elements on the production of five types of grain with error component panel data regression method following the test results of LM tests, Hausman test. The key factors affecting the production of rice were average temperature, average relative humidity and average ground surface temperature. The fluctuations in the other four grains types are not well explained by meterological elements. For other grains and beans, only average temperature and time (year) affect the production of other grains while average temperature, ground surface temperature, and time (year) influence the production of beans. For barley and millet, only average temperature positively affects the production of barley while ground surface temperature and time (year) negatively influence the production of millet. The implications of this study are as follow. First, it was confirmed that the meteorological elements have profound effects on the rice production. Second, when compared to existing studies, this study was not limited to rice but encompassed all five types of grains and went beyond other studies that were limited to temperature and rainfall to include various meteorological elements.

Recent climate change has led to fluctuations in agricultural production, and as a result national food supply has become an important strategic factor in economic policy. As such, in this study, panel data was collected to analyze the effects of seven meteorological elements and using the Lagrange multipliers method, the fixed-effects model for the production of five types of food crop and the seven meteorological elements were analyzed. Results showed that the key factors effecting increases in production of rice grains were average temperature, average relative humidity and average ground surface temperature, while wheat and barley were found to have positive correlations with average temperature and average humidity. The implications of this study are as follow. First, it was confirmed that the meteorological elements have profound effects on the production of food crops. Second, when compared to existing studies, the study was not limited to one food crop but encompassed all five types, and went beyond other studies that were limited to temperature and rainfall to include various meterological elements.

Road pavement in Korea generally undergoes in-service shorter than an expected life cycle. There are many reasons including increased traffic load and other attacks from exposure conditions. In order to extend service life and upgrade the pavement a new multi-functional composite pavement system is being developed in Korea. This study investigates strength of fiber reinforce lean concrete which used fly-ash and reject ash as a cement replacement. In addition this study suggest an appropriate compaction method in order to minimize the experimental scatters that used to come from non-unified specimen fabrication.
