        PURPOSES : A mechanistic-empirical (ME) predictive design logic that can compute the reflective cracking life of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) overlaid on top of a composite pavement is proposed herein. METHODS : The overlay thickness design and analysis logic of the HMA were formulated based on the ME concept of reflection crack propagation. Climate data, traffic load data, the pavement material properties, and the thickness of each layer of the pavement are the main inputs for the ME-Reflective Cracking Rate (RCR) prediction algorithm. An Microsoft Excel Virtual Basic for Application (VBA) program was created to aid designers in assessing the expected performance of an HMA overlay design. Calibration was done using data from the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) sections. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to compare the results yielded by the program and data from a report by the Texas Transportation Institute. RESULTS : The predictive model performance effectively generates the dynamic and relaxation modulus curves. The correlation value of the calibration factors, R2, is 0.79. The calibration factors used for the Asphalt Overlay Thickness Design (AOTD) program and the sensitivity analysis, i.e., k1, k2,, and k3,, are set to 5, 5, and 150, respectively. The sensitivity of the AOTD program affords reasonable results. Additionally, the program yields results similar to the trends presented in a report by the Federal Highway Administration. CONCLUSIONS : The proposed ME design logic is successfully translated into an Excel VBA program, AOTD, which can perform routine assessments of laboratory tests for HMA overlays. The program can effectively perform numerous iterations and computations to predict an HMA overlay. The predictive model can generate reasonable dynamic modulus and relaxation modulus curves for the characterization of HMA overlays. Under the same asphalt binder grade and HMA type, doubling the HMA overlay thickness yields three times the expected reflective cracking service life.

        PURPOSES : This study aims at evaluating the use of an electromagnetic density gauge (EDG) to measure the in situ density and air-void content of asphalt concrete (AC) pavement. METHODS : In situ AC pavement density and air-void readings were obtained from two sites (Daegu and Ulsan) using an EDG. Calibration of the EDG was conducted by first obtaining density values at three different positions, on each pavement where core samples were extracted afterward. The core samples were then tested to obtain laboratory density and air-void values. The density measured using the EDG was then subtracted from the laboratory values to obtain the offset calibration values, which were then adopted to calibrate the in situ measurements using the EDG. Moreover, to analyze the effect of moisture on the pavement surface, EDG measurements were conducted under dry and wet conditions to compare the in-situ readings. RESULTS : The in-situ density readings of AC tend to be higher in moist/wet conditions. By applying the calibration value to the EDG readings, the density error percentage was reduced from 0.61% to 0.096%, and 0.64% to 0.16% for Daegu and Ulsan sites, respectively. Consequently, the air-void content error percentage was reduced from 12.8% to 1.04%, and from 10.07% to 1.78% for Daegu and Ulsan sites, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : The electromagnetic density gauge (EDG) is an effective tool for the non-destructive measurement of in situ pavement density. By applying offset calibration values, the error in the field readings was reduced, and the accuracy of the EDG measurements was improved.

        PURPOSES : This study aims to determine the type (e.g., melting point, freezing point, latent heat fusion) and optimal content of phase change material (PCM) based on the numerical and experimental analyses evaluating the effects of heat transfer in PCM-modified asphalt pavement systems. METHODS : The effect of PCM on the thermophysical properties of PCM-modified asphalt concrete can be taken as an effective volumetric heat capacity. The volumetric fraction of PCM was calculated using an iterative method. The numerical model was established and computed using the MATLAB 2020 software. The optimum PCM design tool was developed to select the type and contents of the PCM. The PCM was chosen based on the following criteria: black-ice-formation delay time, minimize temperature increase, and increase temperature area. To validate the numerical model, asphalt mixtures were modified with varying PCM contents, and the temperature response of the PCMmodified asphalt samples was examined via temperature test. RESULTS : The numerical results showed that incorporating PCM into the asphalt mixture can slow the cooling rate of the pavement system. The predicted results from the optimum PCM design tool were highly consistent with the measured values from the laboratory temperature test. CONCLUSIONS : The temperature of PCM-modified asphalt pavement can be predicted via numerical method. The effect of PCM on the thermophysical properties can be considered as effective volumetric heat capacity; while the volume fraction of PCM can be calculated via an iterative method. The accuracy of the numerical model was confirmed by a high agreement between the measured and predicted values.

        PURPOSES : The adhesive bonding strength of the grid between asphalt pavements is critical in pavement performance. The study is to compare and evaluate the interlayered bonding strength of asphalt mixture specimens with fiber-glass grid (FG) reinforcement and different tack coating materials based on the test results of the shear bonding test. METHODS : Asphalt mixtures were molded with FG reinforcement using various tack coating materials namely RSC4 and D/B coat. The adhesive shear-bond strength was measured by inducing a monotonic shear loadnig rate of 5 mm/min at 20℃. RESULTS : As expected, the asphalt mixture with non-reinforced FG exhibited the highest adhesive shear-bond strength, followed by that of the FG with D/B coating. The ranking order of superiority is as follows: Control (RSC4) > D/B+FG > RSC4+FG. CONCLUSIONS : The results of this experimental study indicate that FG with RSC4 and D/B tack coats can be successfully used in asphalt concrete overlay construction with superior field performance. Based on the test results and literature review, the field bonding strength should exceed 300kPa in grid reinforced asphalt pavement.

        매립회는 석탄을 이용한 화력발전의 부산물로 플라이애시와 바텀애시 등이 회처리장에 별도의 구분 없이 매립되어 공학적 성질이 일정치 않은 재료를 말한다. 이러한 매립회는 한정된 회처리장의 규모와 매립량의 한계에 의해 대량으로 활용될 수 있는 기술이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 경량기포공법을 이용한 되메움재에 매립회의 적용 가능성에 대해 조사하고자 하였다. 매립회의 모래 대체 비율과 시멘트 함량 및 기포제 함량에 차이를 두어 배합된 공시체를 사용하여 역학적 성능 평가를 위해 유동성 시험, 관입 저항시험, 일축압축강도 시험, 동결융해 저항성 시험을 실시하였고, 기능적 성능 평가를 위해 열전도율 측정 시험을 실시하였다. 이러한 실내 시험 결과를 토대로 구간의 현장시험시공을 실시하여 소형충격재하시험 및 재굴착 시험을 실시하여 매립회를 이용한 되메움재의 현장 적용 가능성을 평가하였다. 유동성 시험, 관입 저항시험, 일축압축강도 시험을 통해 적절한 배합설계를 결정할 수 있었고, 이에 따라 동결융해 저항성 및 열전도율 측정 시험을 통해 재료의 역학적, 기능정 성능을 평가할 수 있었다. 매립회의 비율이 높을수록 동결융해에 대한 저항성이 큰 것으로 확인되었고, 열전도율에 가능 큰 영향을 미치는 요인이 기포제 함량인 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또, 현장시험시공을 통해 본 재료가 되메움재로서 적절한 탄성계수를 나타내는 것으로 보였고, 굴삭기는 물론 인력으로도 충분히 재굴착이 가능한 것으로 확인되었다.

        This study evaluates the healing performance of asphaltmixture via microwaves heating method. Three different conductive additive types with various percentages were used, includingsteel wool fibers (SF), carbon fibers (CF), and graphite (G). The healing performance of asphalt mixture wasinvestigated through 10 damage-heal cycles of semi-circular samples using three-point bending test. The infraredcamera was also employed to recordthe heat transmitting in the test samples. The test results indicated that the healing effectiveness reduced after every healing cycles. It was found that microwave radiation provided great healing performance for almost all test samples. Among all types of conductive additives, SF mixtures achieved the highest healing performance with the healing level of higher than 50 percent after 10 cycles. However, microwaves heating may promote the faster aging of asphalt binder at late cycles which lead to the brittle behavior of samples. Finally, homogenous mixing is a critical factor to avoid the cluster formation of conductive additives which causes the overheating of asphalt binder.

        최근 건설재료의 자가치유 기술에 대한 많은 관심을 보이고 있으며, 유럽의 배수성 포장에 자가치유 아스팔트 포장 기술과 배수시설에 박테리아를 이용한 자가치유 콘크리트를 개발하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 유도가열 장치를 이용한 자가치유 아스팔트 포장의 자가치유 성능을 평가하고자 하였다. 스틸섬유를 아스팔트 포장에 혼입하여 아스팔트 포장을 만든 후 3점 피로균열 시험으로 균열을 유도하였다. 유도가열 장치를 이용하여 가열한 후 2-3시간의 휴지기간을 두어 3점 피로균열 시험을 다시 수행하여 자가치유 가능성을 평가하였다. 일반 골재뿐만 아니라 스틸글래그로 아스팔트 혼합물의 가열성능과 자가치유 성능도 평가하였다. 스필섬유의 분포상태를 분석하기 위하여 마이크로 CT-Scan장비를 이용하여 촬영하였다. 시험결과 스틸섬유를 이용하여 제작한 아스팔트 혼합물의 자가치유 가능성이 있었으며, 자가치유 성능정도를 분석하여 최적의 스틸섬유함량을 결정하였다. 다양한 조건에서 자가치유 성능을 평가하였으며, 매우 효과적인 것으로 나타났다

        PURPOSES: Reflection cracking has been one of the major causes of distress when asphalt pavement is laid on top of concrete pavement. This study evaluated the reflection cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures reinforced with asphalt embedded glass fiber and carbon fiber using a Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) overlay tester. METHODS : Different asphalt mixtures such as polymer-modified mastic asphalt (PSMA) and a dense graded asphalt mixture were reinforced with asphalt-embedded carbon fiber and glass fiber. For comparison purposes, two PSMA asphalt mixtures and one dense graded asphalt mixture were evaluated without fiber reinforcement. Two different overlay test modes, the repeated overlay test (R-OT) and monotonic overlay test (M-OT), were used to evaluate the reflection cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures at 0 ℃. In the R-OT test, the number of repeated load when the specimen failed was obtained. In the M-OT test, the tensile strength at the peak load and tensile strain were obtained. RESULTS : As expected, the fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture showed a higher reflection cracking resistance than the conventional nonreinforced asphalt mixtures based on the R-OT test and M-OT test. The dense graded asphalt mixture showed the least reflection cracking resistance and less resistance than the PSMA. CONCLUSIONS: The TTI overlay tester could be used to differentiate the reflection cracking resistance values of asphalt mixtures. Based on the R-OT and M-OT results, the carbon-fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture showed the highest reflection cracking resistance among the nonreinforced asphalt mixtures and glass-fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture.

        아스팔트 콘크리트 포장 포토홀은 최근 차량 파손등 운전자의 쾌적한 주행에 악영향을 주고 있다. 포토 홀은 아스팔트 콘크리트 포장의 수분민감저항성이 떨어져 발생하는 파손형태로 국토교통부에서 아스팔트 혼합물의 간정인장강도비를 80% 상향 조정하였으며 80%에 미달하는 아스팔트 혼합물은 박리방지제를 사 용하도록 규정하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 아스팔트 혼합물의 수분민감 저항성을 증가시키기 위하여 박리방지제 사용하였으며, 초 기 박리방지제의 성능검증을 판별하기 위해 보일링(Boiling Water Test, ASTM D 3625-96) 시험을 실 시 하였다. 간접인장강도 시험은 시편을 7.0±0.5% 공극률로 제작하였으며, 습윤(동결융해), 건조 샘플을 나누어 실험을 진행하였고 간접인장강도(Indirect Tensile Strength)를 측정하여 간접인장강도비 (Tensile Strength Ratio)를 산정하였다. 간접인장강도 시험 분석결과 습윤시편과 건조시편의 강도 차이가 무첨가 아스팔트 혼합물에서는 차이 가 분명하게 나타났지만, 액상박리방지제 첨가 시편들에서는 근소하게 나타났다. 간접인장강도비 분석결 과 액상박리방지제 무첨가 시편은 53%, 개발한 액상방리방지제 첨가 시편은 기준치인 80% 이상으로 나 타나 미국의 상용 박리방지재와 별 차이가 없었다.

        콘크리트 포장위에 아스팔트 포장 덧씌우기를 수행할 경우 반사균열이 만연하여 유지보수에 많은 예산 이 투입되고도 효과적인 유지보수 방법이 되지 못하여 많은 문제점으로 대두되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 반사균열을 모사할 수 있는 텍사스교통연구원의 덧씌우기 시험기(Texas Transportation Institute Overlay Tester: OT)를 이용하여 다양한 경우에 대하여 반사균열 저항성을 평가하였다. OT 시 험은 콘크리트 포장위의 아스팔트 덧씌우기 포장의 반사균열을 가장 잘 모사할 수 있는 기계로 알려져 있 다. 시험온도는 반사균열이 추운온도에서 섭시 0도로 하였으며, 수평으로 반복하중을 재하하였다. 시료는 PSMA, 밀입도, 그리드+PSMA, 그리드+밀입도 아스팔트 포장에 대하여 시험을 수행하였다. 시험결과 탄소섬유그리드+PSMA의 반사균열 저항성이 가장 컸으며, 밀입도의 반사균열 저항성이 가장 작았다. 시험결과를 이용하여 향후 콘크리트 포장위의 반사균열 저항성을 증진시키기 위한 시공법 개발의 기초자료로 사용할 수 있을 것이라 판단된다.

        PURPOSES : The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures containing developed liquid antistripping agents using the boiling water test as a screening test. METHODS: The boiling water test was used to evaluate the moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures containing different anti-stripping agents. The tensile strength ratio was calculated to compare the moisture susceptibility of the asphalt mixtures after indirect strength tests were performed. Additionally, image analysis techniques were used to calculate and analyze the quantity of stripped area in the asphalt mixtures. RESULTS: In general, the asphalt mixtures containing anti-stripping agents showed a higher resistance of anti-stripping based on the boiling water test and tensile strength ratio. CONCLUSIONS: The boiling water test can be used to differentiate the resistance of moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures, except for asphalt mixtures containing hydrated lime. The boiling water test can be used as a screening test for asphalt mixtures before conducting time consuming and expensive indirect tensile strength tests.
