To determine the effect of the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in odontoclast formation, we administrated a TNF-α inhibitor in rats with diabetes rats with periodontitis. The rats included in the study were divided into three groups: control rats without diabetes or periodontitis (the C group), rats with periodontitis and diabetes (the PD group), and rats with periodontitis and diabetes treated by infliximab, the TNF inhibitor (the PD+infliximab group). The PD and PD+ infliximab groups received intravenous administrations of streptozotocin (STZ, 50 mg/kg) to induce diabetes. After 7 days of STZ injections, the mandibular first molars were ligatured to induce periodontitis. The PD+infliximab group was intrapenitoneally administrated by infliximab (5 mg/kg). On days 3 and 20 after the ligature administration, odontoclast formation along root surfaces was evaluated by tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining and cathepsin K immunohistochemistry. On day 3, the number of TRAP- and cathepsin K-positive cells increased more so in the PD group than in the C group. The PD+infliximab group showed a lower number of positive cells than the PD group. There was no difference in all the groups on day 20. On day 3, the cathepsin-K positive multinucleated and mononucleated cells were higher in the PD group than in the C group. The number of cathepsin-K positive multinucleated cells was lower in the PD+infliximab group than in the PD group. The PD group showed more cathepsin K-positive cells in the furcation and distal surfaces than the c group. The Cathepsin K-positive cells of the PD+infliximab group were lower than that of the PD group in furcation. These results suggest that TNF-α stimulates odontoclast formation in diabetes with periodontitis.
In this study, we described a suitable prioritisation scheme on these exempted drugs and established fundamental rules for residue monitoring enforcement in Korea. The principles of exempted materials were established. Based on these established criteria, 75 materials with high priority were selected and grouped. Among these materials, we have decided that 25 substances required further review for monitoring. Important factors for determining the priority for monitoring, product factor during the recent 4 years, veterinary medicine factors, including applied symptoms and component conditions, animal factors, including applied animals, and toxicological factors including acceptable daily intake (ADI), establishment of residual quantity permitted (MRL) or withdrawal periods, various provisory clauses and so on were set. High priority substances were acethylsalicylic acid, bromhexine, chlorpheniramine, and acetaminophen. In addition, we surveyed and provided analysis on the above mentioned materials in this study. The derived results will be suggested to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (QIA) for development of guidelines of policy direction and the effective targeting for their monitoring program.
Bovine brucellosis causes abortion and infertility. The authors conducted this study in order to determine pathological lesions of Korean native cows and fetuses who received experimental vaccination with Brucella abortus RB51 and were challenged with Brucella abortus 2308. Gross and histopathological lesions in endometrium and placenta were observed in cows of the vaccinated group. Twenty-five percent of pregnant cattle in the vaccinated group showed endometritis and placentitis, which was three times lower, compared with the non-vaccinated group. The pathological lesions in the uterus and placenta in both groups were consistent with previous reports. Therefore, vaccination in heifers using Brucella abortus RB51 may not provide adequate protection against infection with Brucella abortus virulent strain.
Korea had experienced second epidemic highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), and there were the seven affected farms, including two breeder duck farms, from 22nd November 2006 to 6th March 2007. Here, we reported the clinico-pathological characteristics of domestic breeder ducks farms naturally infected with HPAI virus (H5N1). Clinically, the most ducks showed various signs from depression, decreased egg production and feed consumption to even, death. The most commonly gross changes were hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhage on the liver surface, a white stripe on the cardiac muscle, and severely hemorrhagic and deformed eggs. The most significant histopathological changes were necrosis of various cells such as neuron, lymphocytes, cardiac myocytes, hepatocytes, blood vessels and pancreatic acinar epithelium. The viral antigen was mainly detected in the endothelium of blood vessels of various organs and tissues, peripheral nerves and neuronal cells. Based on the above results, we identified that HPAI H5N1 induced systemic infection in the adult breeder ducks.
Grossly, a lot of soft white nodules, 0.5~1.5 cm in diameter, were randomly scattered in liver of a slaughtered Korean Native Cattle. The surface of liver was roughened by those nodules. Histopathologically the nodules were consisted of numerous mature blood vessels, which had variable size and wall thickness, and which were encircled by much connective tissue. Masson's trichrome stain clearly revealed the proliferated blood vessels and perivascular stroma and, immunohistochemical staining revealed that endothelial cells of proliferated blood vessels were positive for Von Willebrand Factor. Based on gross and histopathological lesions, and immunohistochemical staining, the case was confirmed as hepatic vascular hamartoma and it is the first case report in Korea, as far as we know.
