The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the angle of a wedged insole on knee varus torque during walking. Fifteen healthy subjects were recruited. Knee varus torque was measured using three-dimensional motion analysis (Elite). Knee varus torque was normalized to gait cycle (0%: initial contact; 100%: ipsilateral initial contact) and stance phase (0%: initial contact; 100%: ipsilateral toe off). The average peaks of knee varus torque during the stance phase of the gait cycle according to the different insole angles (10 or 15 degrees) were compared using one-way ANOVA with repeated measures. The results showed that in the early stance phase, the average peak knee varus torque increased significantly for both the medial 10 and 15 degree wedged insole conditions and decreased significantly for both the lateral 10 and 15 degree wedged insole conditions as compared with no insole (p<.05). However, there were no significant differences between the 10 and 15 degree wedged insole conditions with either the medial or lateral wedged insole (p>.05). In the late stance phase, the average peak knee varus torque increased significantly for the medial 10 and 15 degree wedged insole conditions (p<.05), but not for the lateral 10 and 15 degree wedged insole conditions as compared with no insole (p>.05). We suggest that these results may be beneficial for manufacturing foot orthotic devices, such as wedged insoles, to control medial and lateral compartment forces in the knee varus-valgus deformity. Further studies of the effects of wedged insole angle on knee varus torque in patients with medial-lateral knee osteoarthritis are needed.

The purposes of establishing accreditation standards for the occupational therapy program are to assure the quality of the program and to assist in the development of the program. Accreditation serves the public as accredited programs modify their requirements to reflect changes in knowledge and practice generally accepted in the field. To students, accreditation provides an assurance that the educational activities of an accredited program have been found to be satisfactory, and therefore meet the needs of students. Also it assists in the transfer of credits between institutions, or in the admission of students to advanced degrees through the general acceptance of credits among accredited institutions when the performance of the students has been satisfactory and the credits to be transferred are appropriate to the receiving institution. The occupational therapy programs benefit from accreditation through the stimulus provided for self-evaluation and self-directed program improvement and strengthening of program self-evaluation by the review and counsel provided through the accrediting agency. At the same time, this process enhances the reputation of an accredited program because of public regard for accreditation. Lastly, the profession of occupational therapy can be strengthened by contributing to the unity of the professions in an activity directed at improving professional preparation and professional practice.

This study was conducted to investigate the status and the life satisfaction of amputees from July 9, 2001 to August 18, 2001. Questionnaire survey was collected from lower extremity amputees using the services of prosthetic and orthotic centers in five Veterans Hospitals (Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, Daeku, and Daejun), Seoul Tehlin prosthetic and orthotic center, Chunan prosthetic and orthotic center, and Junju Lee Ganga rehabilitation institute. Amputees were grouped as trans-tibial amputees, trans-femoral amputees, and bilateral amputees based on amputation level. Demographic and social characteristics, performance of social role, and factors influencing life satisfaction revealed findings as follows: 1) The number of subjects voluntarily participated in the study was 113 (109 men, 4 women), and the mean age of subjects was 53.65 years (age range=22-74 years). 2) The time of amputation was at their second decade mostly (72.6%), and the most common etiology of amputation was trauma (91.2%). 3) The most common type of amputation was trans-tibial amputation (59.3%). Subjects who were employed was 68.1% before amputation and 47.8% after amputation. Subject had income regardless of being employed or unemployed after amputation. 4) No significant difference was found between the scores of social role and the scores of life satisfaction in three groups(p<0.05). 5) The significant factors on life satisfaction was income status and occupational role among variables(p<0.05).
