The effect of mixed oil on the drying characteristics of sewage sludge in oil vacuum evaporation systems was studied. The experimental results showed that the drying rate with cooking oil was faster than that with refined oil due to the difference of thermal conductivity and composition of mixed oil. However, the heating value of all dried sludge was enhanced and the moisture content was below 1% due to penetration of oil into the microbial cells in sludge during the drying procedure. TGA analysis of sludge mixed with the refined oil, which had a higher volatility, showed the slope of the primary falling period was sharply declined. The result of DTA analysis also showed that the first peak was higher than the second peak and corresponded with the phenomena observed in the TGA analysis. In the DTA analysis, the temperature of the primary peak and the secondary peak of dried sludge were comparatively lower than those of raw sludge. Therefore, mixed oil could decrease the self-ignition temperature in an oil-sludge mixing system. In case of waste cooking oil, the TGA and DTA results showed similar results to those of raw sludge, but the DTA results showed that the secondary peaks of dried sludge were narrower and sharper than those of raw sludge. Overall, mixing oil could be a principal factor in controlling the drying efficiency and thermal properties of sludge-derived fuel in oil vacuum evaporation systems.
Acid mine drainage (AMD) has emerged as one of the greatest environmental threats facing mining industry owing to its characteristic low pH, high acidity and elevated concentrations of metals and sulphate content. This study evaluates the efficiency of fly ash as a low cost material to remove heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb) from AMD. The effects of varying contact time, dosage and pH on adsorption were investigated using synthetically prepared AMD. The experiments was conducted in series of batches for adsorption using a mechanical shaker with 50mL AMD at various dosages of fly ash (0.1 - 0.8g/L) and coagulation using a standard jar tester of 1000mL AMD with chemical coagulant dosages (0.5 - 10g/L). Tests were also conducted with 50mL AMD without fly to evaluate the treatment efficiency of fly ash to chemicals. All tests were performed in duplicate for consistency and accuracy. The chemical composition of fly ash was characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and the result shows the fly ash is rich in calcium (CaO 54.9%). Leaching test of the fly ash was conducted using KLST and TCLP method to compare the results and evaluate the behavior of leaching ash in replenishing acidic media at low pH such as acid mine drainage. pH plays a significant role in heavy metal uptake in this study with increased in pH value the removal rate increased. The optimum dosage for Adsorption was found to be 0.4g/L with 60 min optimum contact time and coagulation 6mg/L with reduced metal concentrations much less than regulation standards for Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb. From all tests conducted fly ash proves more efficient with over 96% removal even at low dosages. The effectiveness of the treatment process will depend on the quality of the fly ash and the AMD. Therefore the use of fly ash for treatment of mine wastewater would represent a new market opportunity for this waste product. Recycling of fly ash will conserve the natural raw materials and abridge the disposal cost. It will also create new revenues and business opportunities while protecting the environment. Most significantly, the two waste products acid mine drainage and fly Ash could be neutralized and when reacted together to produce much cleaner water broadly compared to post process water derived from Lime treated AMD and sulfates removal rates were in the range of 90% in both experiments. Fly ash is more economical, sustainable.
This study was performed to evaluate the drying characteristics of food waste in oil vacuum evaporation system withdrying conditions and composition of food waste. The food waste was collected and separated into 4 categories such asvegetables, fruits, grain (rice), meats and others. which composition were 41.9%, 26.7%, 2.8%, 25.5% and 0.4%,respectively. Each food waste separated was dried and compared its characteristics in the same condition of vacuumpressure (−450mmHg), temperature (110oC) and mixing ratio (oil:food waste=1:1) for 90min of drying period. Theexperimental results showed that the moisture contents of dried vegetables, fruits and meats were less than 10%. Howeverthe grain was hard to be dried which moisture content was much high as 24.5%. This high value of the grain was thoughtdue to the viscosity of grain which prohibit oil penetration and water vaporization during drying process. In order tocompare drying characteristics with operating parameters, vacuum pressure, temperature and mixing oil type were changed. The operating temperature and vacuum pressure were major sensitive parameters. As the temperature increase and thepressure lower, the drying rate of food waste was increased and its efficiency was also improved. Especially, the moisturecontent of dried food waste was lower than 5% which was satisfied SRF standard 10% at the temperature over 110oC.Compared the effect of mixing oil type, waste cooking oil was more effective than refined oil in viewpoint of dryingefficiency. However, there is no difference of drying efficiency between fresh and waste cooking oil.
The drying and fuel technologies for sewage sludge have been developed due to the prohibition of ocean dumping and new renewable portfolio standard. This study was performed to enhance the quality of sludge derived fuel and compare drying characteristics for thickened and digested sewage sludge at different temperature, pressure and mixing oil conditions in oil vacuum evaporation system. In addition to investigate calorific value and characteristic analysis of dried sludge. The thickened and digested sludge used in this study were taken from municipal sewage treatment plant and coagulated using polymer (C-310P) in laboratory. The drying rate was increased with temperature and degree of vacuum and it was 25 mL/kg-sludge·min at 110oC and –450 mmHg. The moisture content of dried sludge products showed very low within 1% in the range of 0.4 ~ 0.8%. The evaporation rate of thickened sludge was lower than digested sludge and the constant evaporation period was also shorter. Compared the effect of waste cooking oil and refined waste petroleum oil on drying efficiency, the waste cooking oil showed more effective than refined oil in evaporation rate and drying time. The carbon and hydrogen contents of dried sludge with refined oil were higher than waste cooking oil. The low heating value of thickened dried sludge was higher than digested dried sludge about 400 kcal/kg and both of dried sludge showed high calorific value more than 4,000 kcal/kg.
