The aim of this study was to investigate the factors affecting earth science problem-solving performances of elementary school pre-service teachers. The participants of the study were 81 students attending an elementary school teacher education university. The instruments of the study were paper-and-pencil tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The tests mainly measured the participants' problem solving abilities in the motions of the moon and the planets. Correlation and multiple regression techniques were used for data analysis. The results demonstrated that the pre-service teachers' problem solving abilities were low. Problem-solving performances were affected by the procedural knowledge, the participants' perception of the past earth science performance, self-efficacy, and the prerequisite declarative knowledge. Contrary to our expectation, the spatial visualization ability was not found to be related to the problem-solving performances. Implications of the study are drawn, and suggestions are made for further research.

The facts of job satisfaction and their perceived importance among elementary school foodservice dietitians were assessed. The survey instrument consisted of three parts: the job satisfaction survey was used to measure facets of job satisfaction and the level of total satisfaction; perceived importance questions for corresponding job facets; and demographic items. A survey of school food service operations was undertaken and detailed information was collected from 170 dietitians. The collected data were processed using the SPSS package program for descriptive analysis and analysis of valiance. School foodservice dietitians' importance and satisfactions scores on their job and working environment were 4.25 and 2.83, respectively. The respondents rated the subscales of 'communication' and 'nature of work' the highest and the subscales of 'pay' and 'working environment' the lowest The results of facet satisfaction scores and corresponding perceived importance scores were paired to be plotted on the Importance-Performance Analysis Grid. IPA grid was used to provide a strategy for food service managers to counteract dietitian dissatisfaction.

This study was peformed to investigate the use of preprocessed foods, satisfaction on using them, and the plausibility to extend its use in 134 elementary school foodservices in Incheon by questionnaire from December 11th to 28th in 1999. The percentages of school foodservices to purchase and use preprocessed foods were 99.06% in seed, 97.64% in fishes and poultry, 87.74% in meats, 57.55% in eggs, 55.32% in fresh vegetables, 51.42% in dried vegetables and 34.90% in beans. Dietitians were satisfied with having used preprocessed foods, and the reduction in cooking time was listed as the biggest advantage which could be obtained by using preprocessed foods. However, dietitians showed relatively negative attitudes for the plausibility to expand use of preprocessed foods.

King Sejong created Korean characters so that the general public could express their thought freely in written communication. This is unique in the history of mankind, but as much of the vocabulary of our language consists of loan words from Chinese it must be confusing if we use only Korean characters because there will be no good ways for us to tell the difference between a great number of Chinese homonyms that we coined or borrowed. Therefore we have fostered a culture where we use both Korean and Chinese characters to minimize the possible confusion. A good look at the present Elementary School Curriculum will tell us that simultaneous teaching of Chinese characters is more or less optional, so we elementary teachers have had this option reflected on our classroom teaching. Entering a new age of simultaneous use of Chinese characters, we teachers need to know what actually happens in the classroom to teach Chinese letters and to indicate the directions for adequate teaching. The most important purpose of simultaneous teaching of Chinese characters at Elementary School levels is to help students exercise their brain, expand their thinking and know how to pick up exact words in the context, as well as inculcating good personality. No one will discount these benefits of simultaneous use of Chinese letters. Until recently, Korea has run its national system and nurtured its culture through the Chinese transcription. Therefore, passing on and developing the rich linguistic legacy will undoubtedly result in maximizing the potential of our nation. However, as the power system changed, our country`s literacy policy changed too often, which we know caused confusion. Also, in the dimension of national education, some narrow-minded policies led us to the path of localism. It is thus more than imperative that we teach both Korean and Chinese letters to our children since we live in the 21st century and in the Global Village. For the program to be successful, priority should be given to the awareness of the pedagogical importance by the principals and their assistants who are the managers of the education in the field as well as to the implementation by the teachers in the classroom aided by a variety of off-the-job training programs, seminars and symposiums. The government should establish an educational policy to get people to make use of Chinese characters which account for 70 percent of our day-to-day use of written language. In sum, starting from the Elementary School education, teaching Chinese Characters should be included in the regular curriculum and there must be a simultaneous use of this graphic system in the Korean textbooks, which will in time instill the notion of efficiency and economy.

This study was undertaken to assess grade and gender differences in dietary behavior, food preference and perception about body image of students in 4, 5 and 6th grades in elementary school in Kwangju. Anthropometric data showed that mean height and weight were 137.98±6.79cm 32.69±6.09kg, in the 4th grade, 144.11±6.91cm, 36.88±7.60kg in the 5th grade and 151.52±7.47cm, 42.68±8.06kg in the 6th grade. Height and weight of male and female students of each grade were very similar to those of the Korean standard Growth data. Females in the 5th and 6th grades were taller than those in male students, which suggested the height growth spurt in females. Furthermore, both genders showed marked variability even in the same group. All the three different obesity indices(BMI, Rohrer and % of ideal body weight) showed higher value in males than in females consistently. Male respondents desired taller and heavier body shape while females perceived they were heavy and desired only taller and thinner body image. There were significant differences in satisfaction with height, weight and body image by grade(p〈0.05). 36.7% of subjects responded that they did not eat despite hunger. In higher grade they felt guilty after eating sweet things. Strikingly, it was noted a small number of students tried to take a diet pills or vomited on purpose. Data on food preference showed that female did not like sweet food and pork. While male students preferred red meat and chicken. Thus result indicated that there was a great difference in food preference by gender.
