Korean society has experienced a significant change during the last couple of decades. The importance of community life to the well-beings of the inhabitants has increased. A community is an area where inhabitants get together with other peoples. A community development is a process by which the inhabitants improve their leaderships to solve problems which are imminent to the people in the same area. The central government entrusts much of its job related to the social welfare to the local government. And the local government has to draw abundant resources from its community for the well-beings of the inhabitants. Korean churches are required to be involved in the process of community development. During last couple of decades, Korean churches have not been active in contributing to their communities. Nowadays people do not have positive opinions towards the Church. The younger generation especially has an anti-Christian attitude towards the Church. It tends to be very hard to evangelize the non-believers because of such bad reputation. To change this situation, Korean churches have to reconsider their responsibilities concerning their participation in their communities. Seoul Jangsin University is located in Kwang-ju, which is nearby Seoul. In comparison to neighboring cities around Seoul, Kwang-ju city is underdeveloped. That is because the government put many regulations to preserve drinking water for the people of Seoul area. When churches located in Kwang-ju city try to participate in the community development ministry, they have to understand the situations related to the welfare system. If they can cooperate with the local government, their services will be more effective and their influence more broad. CHE mission, a mission agency which has lots of experiences related to community development in an international scale, can help the local churches obtain much information and skill related to community development. The churches can cooperate with CHE Mission. In cooperation with CHE Mission, Seoul Jangsin University held a seminar for community development named “Salt and Light Training.” It is to prepare the leaders of the local churches with the necessary concepts and methods needed for community development. The purpose of the seminar is to facilitate the participation of the local churches in the process of community development in Kwang-ju. When the leaders of the local churches cooperate with the three sectors mentioned above, which are the local government, CHE Mission and Seoul Jangsin University, the resources of the churches can be utilized more effectively and strategically. In Kwang-ju city, local churches have to cooperate with each other. In that way, even small churches can discover what they can contribute to the development of the city. CHE Mission has developed a strategy called “the Seed Project.” It is an implementation project starting from small deeds like cleaning the streets or helping chirldren cross the sidewalks. The Seed Project begins with examining the conditions of the inhabitants in the community. When Christians planning a seed project find the need of the inhabitants, they try to satisfy the need. With God‘s help, they can expect great results from small efforts. In the process of community development, it is important to cooperate with the people of the community. Community development has to be operated in cooperation with the inhabitants. Without their participation, developing the community can not persist. To bring about the long-term effects, the leadership of the inhabitants have to be developed. Community development is one of God’s plan of recovering the world. When the people of God participate in obeyance to God’s command, “love thy neighbors,” they will greatly contribute to the well-beings of their communities. At the same time, their beliefs will be confirmed to be correlated to the realization of their beliefs.

This study intended to propose an improvement plan to improve user satisfaction by establishing a park and green space masterplan by comparing its current status and surveying the residents’ perception of green park services in two regions. The study results showed that the residents are aware of the physical and qualitative aspects of the green park environment. In addition, the quality level of the green park that people may actually use in everyday life was considered a factor for evaluation of satisfaction. In addition, it was found that the residents, who are actual users of the green park services, evaluated the satisfaction of use considering the qualitative characteristics of the green park, such as ‘quality of green park’ and ‘availability of green park.’ As a result, efforts are required to create and improve the quality of green parks efficiently based on establishing qualitative indicators, a survey of residents’ perception, and quantitative analysis to develop policy directions and guidelines of the park and green space masterplan.

Recent economic and income growth in Korea has caused people to seek healthier and happier lives. Forests are seen as spaces that provide tourism and recreation. The Korea forest service and local governments are developing and designating recreational forests but previous studies on the subject have only covered customer satisfaction and how forests are used. As such, the current study aims to find issues with designation criteria for recreational forests used by Gwangju city in Gyeonggi province and suggest improvements to the system. Site E was deemed the most adequate in evaluations of five candidate site. The criteria used in the evaluations were problematic due to (1) a lack of differentiating power in evaluation items, (2) blanket coverage of score ranges, (3) a lack of additional points for special sites, and (4) unclear evaluation indices. Based on the identified issues, the current study suggests introducing additional points and clearly detailing evaluation indices and items to enhance the evaluation of recreational forest candidate sites.

This study was conducted to suggest a management plan for legally protected trees in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do by examining their distribution and growth. A literature review and field survey of these trees were conducted to derive problems and usage plans, with a number of key results. Among the legally protected trees (77 species in total) in 74 locations within Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, the growth status of 74 species (96.10%) was above average, indicating that most legally protected trees were growing without any issues. Despite the results, analysis of the function of these legally protected trees indicated that there was low diversity and utilization of these trees as only trees in 33.77% were used as resting places or pavilions while those in 66.23% were used for landscaping or other purposes. It was assumed that these legally protected trees and the areas surrounding them in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do will be used as community spaces if the environment is improved. This includes converting these areas into small parks or resting places for residents. In addition, further research should be carried out to maintain good growth conditions for these legally protected trees in general and to explore various plans that allow utilization of the surrounding natural ecosystem, human environment, and cultural elements in order to enhance the quality of the region and improve it as a living space for residents.

This study sought to contribute to the revitalization of local economy by developing a natural recreation forest, which is the base of ecotourism recreation, through utilizing forest resources and the natural environment of Gwangju-si. The study conducted a feasibility assessment through on-site surveys such as the suitability of the candidate sites, location analysis, and possibility of damage to the forest, before developing recreation forest sites in Gwangju-si and, based on the result, selected appropriate subject sites. The candidates for this study were 5 forest sites such as one site in the Mokheon-dong area, two in the Docheok-myeon area, and one in the Toechon-myeon area. For this study, the current status of the natural recreation forest was surveyed, its feasibility index and assessment process were investigated, and the local status and related regulations of Gyeonggi-do and Gwangju-si were reviewed. The final subject sites were selected after feasibility assessment utilizing assessment index in order to evaluate the candidate sites. The feasibility assessment was conducted after three separate on-site surveys for each candidate site between October 2018 and January 2019 utilizing “The Feasibility Assessment Criteria for Natural Recreation Forest (Notification 2018-71)” of the Korean Forest Service. The items instrumental to the feasibility assessment were classified into landscape, location, water system, induction of recreation, and development condition; the assessment was made after redefining each item into detailed items. Through this process, the Usan-ri area was selected as the final site for developing natural recreation forest, having obtained more than 100 points according to “The Feasibility Assessment Criteria for Natural Recreation Forest” of the Korean Forest Service. In order to develop natural recreation forest in the Usan-ri area in the future, further discussion is necessary with the relevant departments in consideration of the degree of ecological zoning map.
