The purpose of this study is to overcome the heterogeneity of the inter-Korean languages, focusing on the relationship between the North Korean dialect and the identity of North Korean defectors. While the language problem has been seen as a challenge for North Korean defectors adapting to South Korean society, this paper shifts to view it as a task for South Korean families, highlighting the need for greater acceptance of North Korean language and culture. This paper argues that to restore the language identity of North Korean defectors, signficant changes are required in the ways in which South Koreans perceive, recognize, and accept North Korean dialects as part of a shared language rather than a political language.

The concept of the linguistic landscape provides a framework for analyzing language use in public spaces, offering insights into the linguistic dynamics and identities of a region's inhabitants. This study examines the linguistic landscape of Incheon Chinatown to understand the complex identities of the longstanding overseas Chinese community in Korea. Initially, the study collected and analyzed linguistic data from Incheon Chinatown. It explored how regional names and language types contribute to identity understanding. The findings reveal that Korean, Chinese, and English are predominantly used, each serving different functions and symbolic meanings. Korean is mainly used for informational purposes, while Chinese represents cultural identity and connectivity. The research also investigates language use nuances, such as differences between simplified and traditional Chinese and local signage names. This analysis highlights the diversity and complexity of identities within Korea's old overseas Chinese community. The study is significant as it connects linguistic landscape and identity, contributing to broader discussions on identity in various linguistic environments. It also informs future language policy development, enhancing our understanding of multicultural interactions and identity formations.

Reform and opening-up in China brought rapid changes in the society of ethnic Koreans in China. And those changes caused following changes in language identity and language attitude of those ethnic Koreans that eventually led to change in their language use. The present study investigates relation between changes in language identity and language attitude and their language use. The rates that Ethnic Koreans living in Jilin, China consider their mother language to be Korean(Joseon language, South Korean language and North Korean language) are different by their generations. Middle aged and older people tend more to consider Korean as their mother language compared to younger generation. Those two generations, however, showed opposed opinions about the future language they will use. More of older generation predicted that Korean will be rarely used among ethnic Koreans living in China in the future compared to younger generation. The difference of language identity and the attitude to the language across generations was reflected in their actual language use. Older generations use Korean in general. They may borrow Chinese words when they can’t come up with appropriate Korean words or sometimes show code mixing by using Chinese words and sentences while speaking in Korean. In generations younger than middle age, code mixing and code switching are more frequently observed when their conversation topics are Chinese politics and Chinese cultures. The youngest generation mainly uses Chinese and showed code switching most frequently among all generations. The language use observed differently among the generations is reflection of changes in language identity and language attitude.

The purpose of this study is to investigate change in linguistic identity and language use of Korean Chinese. This study also aims to demonstrate that Korean Chinese are preserving both their identity as Korean and the language. All data were collected by field study which revealed Korean Chinese had high ability of Korean language use. However, considerable differences among the generations were shown. Teenagers showed less fluency of Korean compared to older generation. And Korean Chinese from highly populated with Korean Chinese region spoke Korean as their first language and showed more fluency while those from other region in China mostly spoke Chinese as their first language and spoke Korean less fluently. It is also noticeable that code-switching and code-mixing are prominent in the language use of Korean Chinese, especially among male middle school students. They showed code switching more markedly suggesting their language transition to Chinese. Therefore, further study on detailed examples of code-switching and code-mixing is required.

This study aims at exploring the theoretical perspectives and research related to second language teacher identities. In particular, this paper focuses on the studies on the identities of English teachers in the Korean educational system. Major findings are as follows: First, based on the previous literature on teacher identities, teacher identities are defined as dynamic, multidimensional, and changing, as they continuously interact with individual, social, and cultural contexts. Second, it was found that studies have focused on (1) the meta-analyses of English teacher identities, (2) native-speaking English teacher identities, (3) the identities of non-native-speaking English teachers co-teaching with native-English-speaking teachers, (4) the identities of non-native-speaking English teachers including pre- and in-service teachers, and (5) teacher identity development through teacher education activities. Lastly, this paper brings up issues and suggestions on the formation and development of English teacher identities. It also offers directions for the future research on professional identities of second language teachers.

The theme of this paper is that language is also a social and cultural product made by humans. Therefore, it is insisted that modem language has a lot to contribute to social consensus. ln this aspect, the German language is treated as a test case. Since the German enlightenment, idealistic philosophy has proposed that human beings must be built as sentient beings. The German cultural discourse has been characterized by a tendency to abstraction. ldealistic ideas have led to formalistic effects in face of the great conf1ict of modem society. For that reason, the semiotic aspect of modern identity is a very important field of research.
