        The interest in text mining is recently increasing in the humanities and social sciences. Using a topic-modeling technique, this study analyzed a corpus of study abroad applications to explore a discursive field of study abroad. By doing so, this project finds the ways in which the new text analysis technique can contribute to the methodology of discourse analysis. For this purpose, 4,585 applications for a variety of undergraduate study-abroad programs were collected and sorted out into the corpora of successful and unsuccessful applications. The topic-modeling results show that generated topics generally match the discourses and themes that the existing research of study abroad have considered so far. The comparison of the results between successful and unsuccessful applications reveals that the former tends to exhibit a set of more clearly defined topics and use abstract and generalized words to describe actions engaging with study abroad. This study suggests that the topic-modeling technique can be a useful discourse-analytic tool as it helps understand a broad thematic and discursive terrain in a large size of textual data. This paper also discusses how traditional discourse analysis methods can contribute to addressing methodological limitations in text mining techniques.

        개방화, 세계화의 심화로 국제사회 및 국가간의 상호의존성이 확대되고 있으며, 이에 따라 국제개발협력의 역할과 중요성도 커지고 있다. 또한 글로벌 시장의 개방과경쟁이 날로 심화되고 선진국 위주의 시장확대, 성장이 한계에 다다름은 물론 OECDDAC 가입 등 외교적 국격향상에 따라 대개도국 국제개발협력 확대에 대한 내외부의수요가 증가하고 있다.이러한 대외환경의 빠른 변화는 정책 및 국제공조의 강화 등 거시적 수준의 변화뿐만 아니라 국제개발협력의 방법론의 미시적 수준의 변화를 동시에 요구한다. 이에본 연구는 국제개발협력의 방법론에 대한 새로운 접근법으로서 오픈 이노베이션의 가치를 검토 하였고, 특히 교육분야에서 오픈 이노베이션의 운영사례인 ALCoB을 분석하여 향후 국제개발협력 방법론의 대안을 제시하고자 하였다.

        The study examined the 2009 overseas program of the SNU Intensive English Teacher Training Program (IETTP) to evaluate overall management and its effects for future improvements. Following an overview of the 2009 overseas program, the present study provides the results of the program survey and English proficiency tests that were conducted on 42 trainees. The results indicated that the program was successful in terms of its management and improving English teachers' English proficiency. Especially, the trainees showed strong satisfaction for school visits, culture excursions, and special lecture series which exposed them to invaluable experience of looking into an English speaking country. Three suggestions were proposed in terms of managing and evaluating the overseas program of the IETTP. First, the IETTP needs to take proaction in identifying the needs of in-service English teachers and to reflect those needs in its overseas program. Second, the IETTP needs to develop a customized overseas program which can best support main goals of its overall six-month training program. Lastly, an evaluation of the program needs to incorporate more than just a survey method to triangulate the outcome of the study.

        This study investigates the effects of overseas training on errors and L1 interference in English essays written by Korean university students. The subjects included 124 students who did not have overseas training and 43 students who had experiences of studying in English-speaking countries more than one year. They were asked to write a one-page self-introductory essay at the beginning of each semester. Errors were analyzed according to a list of grammatical categories. The essay length and error rates were compared. The study also makes prognostic suggestions for teaching writing in Korea by diagnosing the sources of errors. It was found that overseas training had positive effects on the essay length and error rates. It was also effective in reducing awkward expressions. The error rates directly attributable to L1 were 8.6% for the overseas experience group and 16.4% for the non-overseas experience group. Error rates attributable to L1 based on the Fluctuation Hypothesis were 45.7% and 51.5% for the overseas and non-overseas experience group, respectively. Students made persistent errors in omitting articles, prepositions, the plural -s, and in using awkward vocabulary and expressions resulting from translation of Korean. The data shows that special prognostic training is necessary to reduce the typical errors.
