Purpose: This study aimed to measure the level of patient advocacy (the core attribute), nursing professionalism and ethical climate perceived by hospital nurses in Korea, and to identify factors influencing patient advocacy (the core attribute). Method: This study was conducted on 234 full-time nurses who had been working for more than 1 year at a general hospital located in a provincial city in Korea. Data were collected from November 15 to 30, 2024, using questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS/WIN 27.0. Results: Among patient advocacy, ‘safeguarding patients’ autonomy’ was explained by 30.0% by professional self-concept, patients, and professional identity in nursing, ‘acting on behalf of patients’ was explained by 34.0% by professional self-concept, role of nursing practice, patients, originality of nursing, and professional identity in nursing, and ‘championing social justice’ was explained by 36.0% by professional self-concept, patients, and managers. Conclusion: In order to improve patient advocacy of hospital nurses, it could be concluded that improving professional self-concept among the sub-factors of nursing professionalism and improving patients among the sub-factors of ethical climate are very effective. Therefore, nursing managers need to make managerial efforts to improve nurses’ professional self-concept and awareness of patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' experiences on patient safety incidents in special departments. Methods: Data were collected from June 1 to July 31, 2019 through in-depth interviews with 8 nurses who worked in tertiary hospitals. Data were analyzed using Braun & Clarke's thematic analysis method. Results: Four themes and fourteen sub-themes emerged. Four themes are as follows: ‘Incidents occurred by missing confirmation in the operating room’, ‘Unexpected incidents in ICU’, ‘Incidents related to difficult intravenous cannulation in pediatric patients’, ‘Nurses are near to patient safety’. Conclusion: The findings provided valuable information on the hospital nurses' experiences on patient safety incidents in special departments, which may have serious consequences and have not been easily addressed. Programs to sustain patient safety and nursing systems to guard against these incidents should be developed.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to develop a simulation scenario for patients with increased intracranial pressure(IICP) and a simulation education program based on Goal-based Scenario(GBS). Methods: The first stage of this study was to investigate GBS, based on which a simulation scenario was developed using the modified Bay Area Simulation Collaborative scenario template. A team of experts was asked to evaluate the scenario. Results: The simulation education program was creasted, which included educational goals, missions, scenarios, roles, scenario operations, resources, and feedback. The scenarios were analyzed on the basis of 4 algorithm: initial assessment, neurologic assessment, IICP nursing assessmnet, reassessment of IICP signs, and monitoring vital signs. Conclusion: The simulation scenarios developed in this study can provide students with opportunities to practice nursing for patients with IICP, Further, this scenario may provide instructors with a systematic and sustainable simulation education model for an instructor.
