In this study, finite element (FE) analysis was performed to evaluate the seismic performance of the water treatment plant, which is a major state of the art water treatment plant, to predict tensile cracks and compressive failure. The FE model simulation for two facilities of the water purification plant was made considering the initial conditions, boundary conditions and water effect. For the nonlinear dynamic analysis, seismic analysis was performed using ground acceleration. Tensile cracks and compressive failure are analyzed and the effects on the structures are analyzed. As a result of the analysis, tensile cracks can be predicted to occur in the main structure.

In this study, refined finite element (FE) analyses intended to evaluate the capacity of the existing water purification plant structures against seismic force are conducted with an aim to predict possibility generating tension crack and compression crushing. The FE models for three types of main plant structures were constructed to take ground condition, boundary condition, and water interaction into consideration for advanced simulation. The nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed by using ground motion data which have been used for seismic design. Both compression crushing and tention crack, which are distributed over concrete plant structures during peak ground acceleration (PGA), are investigated by analyzing failure possibility controlled with the strain limits. After observing FE analysis results, it is possible to predict tenstion cracking which can be found at some parts of the main structure.

Stress-strain curves are fundamental properties to study characteristics of materials. Flow stress curves of the powder materials are obtained by indirect testing methods, such as tensile test with the bulk materials and powder compaction test, because it is hard to measure the stress-strain curves of the powder materials using conventional uniax- ial tensile test due to the limitation of the size and shape of the specimen. Instrumented nanoindentation can measure mechanical properties of very small region from several nanometers to several micrometers, so nanoindentation tech- nique is suitable to obtain the stress-strain curve of the powder materials. In this study, a novel technique to obtain the stress-strain curves using the combination of instrumented nanoindentation and finite element method was introduced and the flow stress curves of Fe powder were measured. Then obtained stress-strain curves were verified by the com- parison of the experimental results and the FEA results for powder compaction test.

The plastic deformation behaviors for powder extrusion of rapidly soildified Al-Si-Fe alloys at high temperature were investigated. During extrusion of Al-Si-Fe alloys, primary Si and intermetallic compound in matrix are broken finely. Additionally, during extrusion metastable phase() intermetallic compound disappears and the equilibrium phase() is formed. In gereral, it was diffcult to establish optimum process variables for extrusion condition through experimentation, because this was costly and time-consuming. In this paper, in order to overcome these problems, we compared the experimental results to the finite element analysis for extrusion behaviors of rapidly solidified Al-Si-Fe alloys. This ingormation is expected to assist in improving rapidly solidified Al-Si alloys extrusion operations.
