This study compares optimization algorithms for efficient estimations of ship's hydrodynamic coefficients. Two constrained algorithms, the interior point and the sequential quadratic programming, are compared for the estimation. Mathematical optimization is designed to get optimal hydrodynamic coefficients for modelling a ship, and benchmark data are collected from sea trials of a training ship. A calibration for environmental influence and a sensitivity analysis for efficiency are carried out prior to implementing the optimization. The optimization is composed of three steps considering correlation between coefficients and manoeuvre characteristics. Manoeuvre characteristics of simulation results for both sets of optimized coefficients are close to each other, and they are also fit to the benchmark data. However, this similarity interferes with the comparison, and it is supposed that optimization conditions, such as designed variables and constraints, are not sufficient to compare them strictly. An enhanced optimization with additional sea trial measurement data should be carried out in future studies.

This paper validates a system identification method using mathematical optimization using sea trial measurement data as a benchmark. A fast time simulation tool, SIMOPT, and a Rheinmetall Defence mathematical model have been adopted to conduct initial hydrodynamic coefficient estimation and simulate ship modelling. Calibration for the environmental effect of sea trial measurement and sensitivity analysis have been carried out to enable a simple and efficient optimization process. The optimization process consists of three steps, and each step controls different coefficients according to the corresponding manoeuvre. Optimization result of Step 1, an optimization for coefficient on x-axis, was similar compared to values applying an empirical regression formulae by Clarke and Norrbin, which is used for SIMOPT. Results of Steps 2 and 3, which are for linear coefficients and nonlinear coefficients, respectively, was differ from the calculation results of the method by Clarke and Norrbin. A comparison for ship trajectory of simulation results from the benchmark and optimization results indicated that the suggested stepwise optimization method enables a coefficient tuning in a mathematical way.

In this study, the hydrodynamic coefficients were measured using various nettings to analyze the change of drag coefficients and lift coefficients as a basic study for deriving hydrodynamic coefficients. The data on hydrodynamic force obtained from the flume tank tests were used to compare and analyze the hydrodynamic coefficients based on Reynolds number. Standardized hydrodynamic coefficients were then assumed during the analysis procedures. The hydrodynamic coefficients were measured using the 9 kinds of nettings in which had the same total projected area with different diameters and mesh-grouping ratio. These different netting systems : mesh-grouping ratio. The results of the test of nettings were as follows; First, the drag coefficients of nettings increased when the higher attack angles applied, and decreased with the increased flow speed and netting twine diameter. Second, the lift coefficients of nettings showed the increased values until the attack angle 30 degree, but decreased for the attack angle over 40 degree. Third, the hydrodynamic coefficients of netting decreased as the Reynolds number increased, and reach at slightly states in the highest numbers. Fourth, the hydrodynamic coefficients were derived from a functional formula considering attack angles and Reynolds number, and presented in the three dimensional space.

The primary objective of this study is to present a modified method of hydroelastic analysis and application of it to the VLFS with submerged plate. The modal analysis method is applied to the VLFS with the submerged plate using the modified hydrodynamic coefficients. Namely, the wave exciting forces are modified by the transmission wave coefficients, while the interaction factor is used for the modification of radiation forces. To validate the proposed method, comparisons between the numerical calculations and experimental data have been carried out for the deflections of VLFS, and it shows good agreement between the calculation and experiment. The results presented in this study demonstrate that the elastic response of the VLFS is strongly affected by the hydrodynamic interaction induced by the submerged plate. As a result, we can confirm that the submerged plate is useful for reducing the hydroelastic deflection of VLFS, and the proposed method is valuable for predicting the elastic response of VLFS with attached the submerged plate.

In order to improve the ship maneuverability, It is important to estimate precisely the hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass forces acting on a ship especially in shallow waters, and simple methods for predicting such hydrodynamic forces Is also very desirable. In the previous paper using 3-Dimension potential flow theory, it has been demonstrated that potential calculation is available to estimate added mass coefficients. The present work is aimed at the suggestion of the simplified formulas for predicting the translation and lateral motion of added mass coefficients in shallow water. So, 3-D potential flow theory is also used to calculate the added mass coefficients in deep and shallow waters for Series 60 model which has 5 different kinds of block coefficients (0.6-0.8), SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. After some series computation, simplified formulas for Predicting the added mass force in shallow waters is suggested based on the computation results of Series 60 model. The formulas consist of the combination of principal dimensions and the water depth; d/B, Cb, d/H. The predicted results are compared with the Computation results for SR196 model and T/S HANNARA. The precision of predicted results by simplified formulas are good enough for the practical use. (d/B : draft-Breadth ratio, d/H draft-Water depth ratio, Cb : Block coefficients).

In marine transportation of bulk cargoes such as crude oil. ore, coal etc., a lot of full form ship which have poor manoeuvrability were presented in many countries. Since ship manoeuvrability depends upon many parameters namely hydrodynamic derivatives, interference factors etc., as external forces, it is of great importance that we investigate these values of parameters on analysis of manoeuvrability. In this paper, we investigated and analyzed interaction coefficients among hull-propeller-rudder for a full form ship by captive model test in circulating water channel, and then compared with experimental results by PMM test. A tanker model ship which has 0.83 as block coefficient and MMG mathematical models were used in this experiment. Almost same tendencies were found in qualitative analysis, even though more serial experiments were demanded in quantitative analysis.
