        Liushu Jingwei is a dictionary of Chinese characters written by Hong Yang-ho at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Ji Yun of the Qing Dynasty compared this book with Wang Anshi’s Zishuo in the Northern Song Dynasty in his postscript, and gave a high evaluation. Zishuo had long been lost, and people today have a collection of lost works. After a comparative reading, it can be seen that the two books have similarities and differences. A comparative study of Zishuo and Liushu Jingwei will help to further understand the similarities and differences in the interpretation of Chinese and Korean regular characters, and it is also meaningful for the study of the spread of Chinese characters in Korea.

        The earlier scholars who have pointed out that Liushu(六书)are six major methods of word-formation in Chinese areBangu(班固)、Zhengzhong(郑众)and Xushen(许慎)in Donghandynasty. To bring these ideas about Liushu to light is essential to the research of the history of philology. ZhengXuan(郑玄)followed Zhengzhong’sopinion on the Chinese Characters, so he selected the term not Xushen’sOpinion but Zhengzhong’sOpinion about Liushu to summarize the methods of Chinese word-formation. It is important to sum up Zhengxuan’sand Zhengzhong’sidea about theChinese Characters and their contribution to the history of philology through checking all Zhengxuan’sannotations about the Chinese word-formation. Zhenzhongand Zhengxuan’sopinion on Liushu has had an immense Influence upon philology of later ages.

        “Liushu(六书)” is a general term for the whole knowledge of an course about Chinese character in elementary education,which contains the source of pattern,reasons and rules of structure,relationship between different characters in a Chinese character cluster,and rules of using these characters to record Chinese language,etc. Based on all those knowledge,the teaching system of Chinese character but not a single style system has been found. In the past long time,the have been misunderstanding that “Liushu”(六书) represented six ways of character-maken,or six styles of character structure. The misunderstanding did not conform to initial fact of “Liushu”(六书). In academic history of science of Chinese character,the study of “Liushu”(六书) came into being. But the study cannot be equated with “Liushu”(六书) itself. Because of misunderstanding,the study goes out of the scope of teaching. As a matter of fact,the selected points of knowledge and terms about “Liushu”(六书) are appropriate for elementary education requirement,its main value is in teaching,but not theorizing. If we want to correct mistakes in modern reading education,a possible solution may be to pick up “Liushu”(六书).
