An enthalpy exchange element (EEE) is frequently made of papers, and a concern exists on growth of fungus or bacteria. This concern may be eliminated if polymer membrane is used instead of paper. Furthermore, most existing enthalpy exchangers have cross-flow configuration, which yields lower performance than counter-flow one. In this study, a counter-flow enthalpy exchange element was made using PVDF and cellulose composite. Heat and moisture transfer tests were conducted changing the frontal air flow rate from 150 m 3 /h to 350 m 3 /h at both the heating and the cooling condition. Results showed that the temperature efficiencies were approximately the same independent of the weather condition. Humidity efficiencies at the heating condition, however, were higher than those at the cooling condition. Furthermore, the heat transfer coefficients approached the theoretical value as the flow rate increased. In addition, the vapor transmission rates at the heating condition were higher than those at the cooling condition, probably due to the higher humidity efficiency at the heating condition. Future research will be focused on moisture diffusion characteristics of the composite membrane, which requires further measurements of water holdup, equilibrium adsorption curve, etc.
In this study, the appearance change and the heat․moisture transfer properties of knitted fabric by yarn shrinkage were examined to obtain useful data on the development of thermo-sensitive functional materials. Eleven types of knitted fabric were knitted using highly bulky acrylic-blended yarn. After shrinking the specimens using dry heat treatment, the appearance change and thickness were measured. An HEC simulator was adopted for measuring the heat․moisture transfer properties of specimens by yarn shrinkage. When holes were arranged vertically in the mesh structure, the specimens with 2,500 and 5,000 holes showed high percent change of hole area, appearance, and thickness. When holes were diagonally arranged in the mesh structure, the percent change of hole area in the specimen with 1,250 holes was larger than the one with 2,500 holes. However, the dimensional stability of the specimen with 2,500 holes was better because of its smaller appearance and thickness change. In the tuck structure, the percent change of hole area in the specimen with 625 and 416 holes was relatively large compared with the appearance and thickness change. Furthermore, the hole size in the tuck structure was smaller than that in the mesh structure but the percent change of hole area was larger. Therefore, it was proved that the tuck structure is more suitable than the mesh structure for developing thermo-sensitive functional materials. Heat․moisture transfer property test verified that the change of hole area by yarn shrinkage enabled obtaining the thermal effect due to the distinct temperature difference in the inner layer.
Changes in temperature and humidity inside a concrete has correlation with movement speed and reaction rate of deterioration factors such as carbon dioxide and chloride ions. comparison was performed between temperature and relative humidity inside the concrete and meteorological data for exposure environment through measurement at the site for two years.
In this paper, time series of soil moisture were measured for a steep forest hillslope to model and understand distinct hydrological behaviours along two different transects. The transfer function analysis was presented to characterize temporal response patterns of soil moisture for rainfall events. The rainfall is a main driver of soil moisture variation, and its stochastic characteristic was properly treated prior to the transfer function delineation between rainfall and soil moisture measurements. Using field measurements for two transects during the rainy season in 2007 obtained from the Bumrunsa hillslope located in the Sulmachun watershed, a systematic transfer functional modeling was performed to configure the relationships between rainfall and soil moisture responses. The analysis indicated the spatial variation pattern of hillslope hydrological processes, which can be explained by the relative contribution of vertical, lateral and return flows and the impact of transect topography.
