본 연구에서는 군산시라는 자연적 고유환경과 산업도시와 해양도시라는 지역특수성을 찾는 과정으로 인문, 자연, 인공 환경의 특징을 조사하여 군산시 환경색채를 분석하여 군산시의 고유색을 체계화하고 도시의 아이덴티티에 영향을 줄 수 있는 경관 및 건축, 공공시설물, 도시상징물의 특성을 분석하고 가이드라인을 제안하였다. 군산시의 도시아이덴티티 부재와 환경적·경관적 문제인식, 연구의 목적, 범위, 방법을 제시하고 도시아이덴티티의 개념과 환경색채의 개념에 대해 연구하고 기존연구의 동향을 통해 도시환경색채계획의 일반적인 특성과 경관색채 조사방법에 관한 이론적 고찰을 하였다.선행사례를 통하여 도시환경색채계획의 특징 및 내용을 분석하고 이를 통하여 군산시의 무형적 도시색채이미지와 유형적 도시색채이미지를 각 권역별로 구분하여 조사하고 분석하며 도시경관 색채 디자인 요소의 조사 분석을 통하여 색채에 영향을 주는 요소를 분석하였다. 권역별로는 아파트 밀집지역, 시가지, 산업단지, 해안연안 및 시설물 경관으로 구분해서 조사하였다. 설문조사를 통하여 기존색채의 경향과 선호하는 배색을 추출하여 조사분석 하였다.
