본 연구는 시각장애인을 위한 길 안내서비스를 구축하기 위한 출발점으로서 시각장애인의 공간인지를 기반으로 이들을 위한 보행자 내비게이션을 개발할 때 필요한 공간정보를 도출하고 각 정보의 적절한 제공방식을 결정할 때 논의되어야 할 문제들을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째 시각장애인의 경우에는 위험요소에 관한 정보가 부차적인 것이 아니라 보행하는데 매우 필수적인 요소로 간주되기 때문에 비장애인과 달리 해당 정보가 원활히 제시될 필요가 있다. 둘째 길찾기에 있어 비장애인에게 중요한 랜드마크와 방향에 관한 정보는 시각장애인에게 있어서도 매우 중요하게 고려되어야 한다. 셋째 개별 정보들의 선정과 제공방식은 시각장애인의 유형에 따라 다르게 제시되어야 한다. 본 연구는 시각장애인에게 공간정보를 음성으로 전달하기 위해 정보들을 여러 차원으로 분류하고 그 전달방식을 제시했다는 점에서 차후 연구의 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다는데 그 의의가 있다.

This is the preliminary study on developing the mobile pedestrian navigation for the visually impaired. Based on the spatial cognition of them, this paper discusses which kind of spatial elements are required and how these can be provided properly. Because more important senses to the visually impaired are auditory and tactile sense, most of the information in the navigation should be given by the forms of verbal instruction, sounds and vibration of the devices. As a result, I suggests that; (1) information about barriers or obstacles such as bollard should be regarded not as secondary, but primary, (2) landmark which is one of the most important elements for wayfinding to the sighted is also crucial to the guidance for the visual impaired, (3) when spatial informations for wayfinding, such as landmark, direction and distance, are needed, specific providing method depends on the types of visual impairment, as such total blindness, meropia, or visual field deficit.
