본고는 정연희가 기독교를 수용한 70년대 중반 이후 발표된 작품을 대상으로 기독교 윤리가 구조화되는 방식을 해명하였다. 외형적으로 이전의 사회비판 소설과 동일한 형태를 취하지만 인식과 구조, 미학적으로 차이를 보이는 이들 작품에서 종교적 윤리성이 구성되는 방식과 내용, 윤리적 실천 양태를 작품분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 정연희 기독교 소설은 그동안의 폐쇄적, 특권적 내면에서 벗어나 타자와의 공감을 회복하면서 사회적 윤리성을 구성하게 된다. 이후 신의 시선을 내면화한 자아가 그 시선으로 자아와 세계를 인식하고 비판하는데 신에 속하지 않은 대상에 대해 분노, 질타하면서 질타의 초점을 인간의 욕망에 맞추고 있다. 이는 욕망을 문명적 창의의 긍정적 에너지로 추앙했던 이전 소설들과 극적 차이를 보이는 것으로, 정연희 기독교 소설의 중요한 변곡점이라 할 수 있다. 한편 분노, 불안, 공포가 고압적으로 노출되면서 사회비판 소설의 서사적 객관성을 넘어서는데 이는 현재의 부정성을 통해 미래의 종말을 계시하려는 묵시록적 서사를 취하기 때문이라 할 수 있다. 창작을 통해 멸망의 징후를 예고하려는 종교적 실천의 결과인 것으로, 부정성을 부정함으로써 최후의 멸망을 부정하려는, 역설적 긍정을 내재한 미학적 표현이라 할 수 있다.

This paper deals with JEONG Yeon-Hee’s portrayal of Christian ethics after her acceptance of Christianity in her novels published after the mid-1970s. Although the novels seem to retain the same form as her earlier novels, there is a significant difference. It is thus worthwhile to research how her later novels reveal the nature and practice of religious ethics. When one’s ego comes out from a closed, privileged, and inner-concentrated mind, and shows sympathy to others, a form of social ethics comes into being. The ego that internally bears the eyes of God comes to recognize and criticize not only the self but also the outside world through the eyes of God. There is a big difference in JEONG’s attitude to the idea of desire between her earlier fiction and later Christian fiction. Desire is condemned in her Christian fiction while it is hailed as a positive creative energy in her early novels. Such negative emotions as compulsive anger, anxiety, and fear in her later novels can be understood as an expression of horror of destruction, an emotional expression of the moral consciousness, and a sense of fear in the apocalyptic narrative foreshadowing the end of the world.
