「백치 아다다」는 물질문명 사회에서의 인간 탐욕에 대한 비판을 제시하는 작품으로 알려졌다. 그러나 작품 속에는 21세기 인간 삶에서 주요 화두로 대두 되는 주제어인 여성, 종교, 장애의 문제가 정교하게 다루어지고 있음을 알 수 있다. 주인공 아다다는 장애인 여성으로서 조선시대 유교의 남성중심주의적 도 덕 담론 하에서 타자중의 타자로서의 삶을 살 수 밖에 없는 인물이다. 아다다는 그 누구로부터도 지지를 받지 못하고, 취약성의 상태로 내몰린다. 지참금을 가 지고 결혼을 하지만, 5년이 지난 후에 시집으로부터 쫓겨나게 되며, 곧 친정으로부터도 외면당하게 된다. 아다다는 결국 노총각 수롱이와의 제2의 인생을 기로 결심한다. 그러나 수롱이와의 함께 하는 삶도 결국 위험에 처하게 된다. 수롱이는 장애인 여성 아다다를 거저 취함으로써 원래 부인을 얻기 위해 모은 150원이라는 돈을 아끼고 되고 그 돈으로 땅을 사려고 한다. 아다다는 돈으로 인해 자신의 삶이 또다시 위협에 처해질 것을 두려워하며 아침 일찍 150원이라 는 돈을 바다 속에 던져버리고 만다. 아다다는 자신의 취약성이 지닌 사회 권력 담론과의 관계성을 인식하게 된다. 또한 그녀는 유교의 남성 중심적 도덕 담론 과 자본의 권력 또한 취약성을 가지고 있음을 저항적으로 보여주고 있다.

“Baekchi Adada” is known as a short story which mainly criticizes the avarice of human being in the materialistic world. However, such crucial issues as women, religion and disability are elaborately portrayed. Adada, a disabled woman, face the harsh life of ‘otherness’ under Confucianistic moral law led by a patriarchal system. Being married with a dowry to an elderly man, after a five year marriage she was expelled from her husband’s home and was even excluded from her own family. She tries to rejuvenate her life with a secondary marriage to Surong, another elderly man, who wants her because he does not have to pay a dowry. Nevertheless, Adada recognizes the essential vulnerability of her life as a disabled woman, and resists the sovereign power of the discriminatory patriarchal system which sacrifices its own unique people. Vulnerability is relational, and Adada’s throwing Surong’s money to the sea represents her resistance to the artificial power of human organization which is basically unstable.
