본 연구의 목적은 마틴 스콜세지 감독의 작품인 영화 <사일런스>를 통해서 기독교 신자들이 겪는 고난, 신의 침묵, 사제의 배교, 그리고 일본에서 기독교 선교의 한계점에 대한 논의라고 할 수 있다. 영화 <사일런스>는 엔도 슈사쿠)의 소설 􋺷침묵􋺸을 영화로 제작한 작품으로 2016년 개봉되었다. 영화 <사일런스> 는 기독교 신앙과 인간 현실 사이에서 제기될 수 있는 본질적 질문에 관한 것이 다. 영화는 신의 존재와 별개로 인간의 고통 지속과 개입의 필요성에 대해서 제 시하고 있다. 영화는 하나님의 개입이 필요한 시점에서 침묵이 이어지는 것에 대해서 의문을 제기한다. 신의 개입은 절대적 믿음을 지닌 신자들에게 적용될 수 있다. 반면 믿음이 약한 신자에게 신은 침묵만을 유지할 뿐이다. 실제로 영화 에서 주인공은 중요한 순간마다 신의 현현을 경험하고 있다. 일본 사회는 전통 적인 신앙 체계와 샤머니즘에 바탕을 두고 있는 천황의 실존성으로 인해서 기 독교가 진입하기 힘든 구조적 한계를 지니고 있다. 결론적으로 신의 침묵과 개 입의 문제는 신자들이 지닌 믿음의 관점에서 판단할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the suffering of Christians, the silence of God, the apostasy of priests, and the limitations of Christian missions in Japan through the movie Silence, directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie Silence is a movie adaptation of Endo Shusaku’s novel Silence, and was released in 2016. The movie Silence is about essential questions that can be raised between Christian faith and human reality. The movie presents the need for human suffering and intervention, regardless of the existence of God. The movie questions the continued silence at a time when God’s intervention is needed. God’s intervention can be applied to believers with absolute faith. On the other hand, for believers with weak faith, God only maintains silence. In fact, the main character in the movie experiences God’s manifestation at every important moment. Japanese society has structural limitations that make it difficult for Christianity to flourish due to the traditional belief system and the existence of the emperor based on shamanism. In conclusion, the problem of God’s silence and intervention can be judged from the perspective of the believers’ faith.
