The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of airborne pollutants (i.e., PMs, TVOC, and ozone) released from a laser printer with a new and/or a refilled toner cartridge. Also we compared the concentrations before and after attaching a HEPA filter at the outlet of exhausted air for each printer. PMs, TVOC, and ozone were released from all three different branded printers with both toner cartridges in accordance with their both a brand new and a used condition. For PMs, there were generally significant differences of concentrations between a brand new and used toner (p<0.05). Ozone level differences were found between a new and a refilled toner, but were not significant (p>0.05). For TVOC, there were significant differences of concentrations among brands, and toluene (3.46mg/m3) only was identified. The overall 70% of reduction for PMs’concentrations occurred after attaching a HEPA filter(p<0.05), and these results were pronounced for TSP. These results showed that similar levels of airborne pollutants were released from a laser printer with a new and a refilled toner cartridge. Also, these results indicate that the usage of a HEPA filter may be an effective method for reducing the released pollutants from a laser printer.

This study was to assess the lifetime cancer and non-cancer risk on exposure to volatile organic compounds This study was assessed the lifetime cancer and non-cancer risk of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exposure in young children at elementary-schools and academies in Korea. The samples were collected at children's facilities (50 elementary-schools and 42 academies) in summer (Aug ~ Sept, 2008), winter (Dec 2008 ~ Feb, 2009) and Spring (Mar ~ Apr, 2009) periods, and analyzed by GC-MSD. We estimated the lifetime excess cancer risks (ECRs) of benzene and the hazard quotients (HQs) of non-carcinogens toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and styrene. In addition, for carcinogens, the excess cancer risk (ECR) was calculated by considering the process of deciding cancer potency factor (CPF) and age dependent adjust Factor (ADAF) from the data in adults. The average ECRs of benzene for young children were 1×10-7~1×10-9 level in all facilities. HQs of four non-carcinogens did not exceed 1.0 for all subjects in all facilities.

There has been a growing concern about the emissions of formaldehyde and VOCs from automotive interior materials which could have an important impact on the in-vehicle air quality(IVAQ) of automotive vehicles. Many leading automobile manufacturers have now introduced their own specification standards for testing and limiting emissions from products produced by their suppliers. In addition, ISO (International Standard Organization) has been established ISO 12219-1, 2, 3, 4, 5 to determine the emissions of volatile organic compounds from automotive vehicle. The objective of this paper is to compare the area specific emission rates determined from surface emissions testing using the microchamber(MC) in comparison with a 1 m3 emission test chamber(ETC) operated in accordance with ISO 12219-3, ISO 12219-4. Measured emission concentrations in absolute terms were different between Microchamber and 1 m3 chamber. However, qualitative comparison of the chromatograms shows that the Microchamber is able to perform a screening test

Personal or population exposure to hazardous air pollutants has often been assessed by time-weighted average model with combining concentrations of indoor environments and time-activity pattern, which were mainly a single measurement. However, daily levels of air pollutants in indoor environments may greatly be changed because of source emission, ventilation, decay rate and so on. Subsequently exposure by a single measurement in indoor environments could not be assessed properly. In this study, we measured the consecutive 21 daily indoor and outdoor measurements of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) with 37 houses and 19 shops such as restaurants and coffee shops beside street by using of passive samplers. Considering that average concentration during 21 days was true value, paired t-test was conducted. Daily variations of NO2 in houses with constant or low emission source were different from those in restaurants with irregular or high emission source. These results can be explained that the NO2 emission of indoor sources could affect the validity of measurement periods.

The purpose of this study were to investigate the state of indoor environmental factors and energy consumption during winter in residential houses and to analyze factors which influenced this environment. Energy consumptions and indoor environmental factors of this survey were conducted in 21 houses(apartment, 11 and detached houses,10) between December, 2010 and February, 2011 which measured energy consumptions and indoor environmental factors as well as kept records of interviews with residents and other related factors. The results obtained were as follows. Indoor environmental factors which were found to influence apartment houses higher than detached houses. The average gas consumption of detached houses(90.983) was higher than that of apartment houses(76.333). Gas consumption showed positive correlations to temperature and carbon dioxide in the residential houses. The mean concentration of PM10, and CO2 in large family were higher than those of small family. We found that the more gas consumption, the higher concentration of PM10, CO2 and temperature(p<0.01).

Most of the subway stations are located underground and the indoor air quality can be very poor. IAQ tele-monitoring systems (TMS) have been installed at some of subway stations in Seoul to monitor indoor contaminants, such as carbon dioxide, particulate matters and nitrogen oxides. In this paper, we use CO2, PM10, NO2 concentration data collected by TMS in one of the underground stations in Line 4. The correlations are analyzed between the concentrations measured at different locations, such as tunnel, waiting room, and platform to identify the source characteristics. The results indicate there are very weak correlations between CO2-NO2 and PM10-NO2 but strong correlation between CO2-PM10, because both of PM10 and CO2 are related to the number of passengers. The comparison of PM10 concentrations before and after the installation of platform screen door (PSD) indicates that considerable amount of particulate matters are entrained from tunnel into platform area. The PSD exhibits positive effects on indoor air quality especially on particulate concentrations. In case of NO2, there is a strong correlation between indoor and outdoor concentrations. The results presented in this paper can be used to control indoor air quality in subway stations more effectively.

High-throughput microscopy (HTM) was developed recently for the automatic detection of airborne asbestos fibers that can cause lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. The HTM method has been applied to couting the airborne asbestos fibers as an alternative to the conventional phase contrast microscopy (PCM). In this paper, we demonstrated that the HTM enabled us to obtain quantitative results for low-concentration airborne asbestos samples under detection limit, and we made a comparison between the results from HTM and PCM. In addition, a verification study was conducted using proficiency analytical testing (PAT) samples of chrysotile and amosite. The HTM method can be applied to the existing PCM method by reducing analysis time and labors. Potential applications can be extended to detection of asbestos fibers in soil and water.

A bake-out process using auto switchgear was carried out to evaluate the reduction effect of the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde in newly-built apartments for seven days. The reduction rate of VOCs was observed as followings: 19%, 38%, 89%, 90%, and 96% for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene, respectively, which satisfies at the indoor air quality standards of newly-built apartment houses in Korea. The reduction rate of formaldehyde was 75%. Those results proved that the bake-out process using auto switchgear was effective for reducing indoor air pollutants.
