The effects of doping on the crystal structure, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of (K,Na) (KNN) ceramics have been investigated. was found to be effective in enhancing the densification and grain growth during sintering. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that Mn ions substituted B-site Nb ions up to 2 mol%, however, further doping induced unwanted secondary phases. In comparison with undoped KNN ceramics, the well developed microstructure and the substitution to B-sites in 2 mol% Mn-doped KNN ceramics resulted in significant improvements in both piezoelectric coupling coefficient and electromechanical quality factor.

The perilla leaf pyralid moth, Pyrausta panopealis Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is a serious pest damaging to leaf perilla. In order to establish the life parameters of P. panopealis for eventual purpose of control, the developmental span of each stage were investigated under five temperature regimes (20℃ ~ 3 0℃). In addition, the larvicial efficacy of several on-the-market environment-friendly agricultural materials (EFAMs) was tested. The width of head capsule at each larval stage measured to be the mean of 0.21, 0.32, 0.47, 0.64, and 0.98 mm, respectively. The larval period of P. panopealis was longest at 20ºC as 27.0 days and shortened as temperature goes up to 30ºC as 11.3 days. Survivorship of the larval P. panopealis was the highest at 30ºC as 80%, whereas that of other temperatures ranged from 40% (20ºC) to 62.5% (27.5ºC), indicating that the P. panopealis appears to favor higher temperature. In addition to larval period, the duration of egg, prepupa, and pupa stages also shortened as temperature goes up, whereas the duration of adult stage increased as temperature goes up: from 4.1 days at 20 ºC to 6.1 days at 30ºC. After the perilla leaf pyralid moths were successfully stabilized in indoor environment the larvicidal efficacy of the ten EFAMs that were previously selected from the result of other moth species was tested aimed at 4th instar larvae for 48 hrs. Seven of the ten tested showed more than 90% of mortality within 12 hrs and reached nearly up to 100% within 24 hrs, but the remaining three showed less than ~70%.

Periodontal disease is a major oral disorder and comprises a group of infections that lead to inflammation of the gingiva and the destruction of periodontal tissues. PPARy plays an important role in the regulation of several metabolic pathways and has recently been implicated in inflammatory response pathways. However, its effects on periodontal inflammation have yet to be clarified. In our current study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of PPARy on periodontal disease. Human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) showed high levels of intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), and -9 (MMP-9). Moreover, these cells also showed upregulated activities for extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK1/2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygnase-2. However, cells treated with Ad/PPARy and rosiglitazone in same culture system showed reduced ICAM-1, VCAM-1, MMP-2, -9 and COX-2. Finally, the anti-inflammatory effects of PPARy appear to be mediated via the suppression of the ERK1/2 pathway and consequent inhibition of NF-kB translocation. Our present findings thus suggest that PPARy indeed has a pivotal role in gingival inflammation and may be a putative molecular target for future therapeutic strategies to control chronic periodontal disease.

Using thirty-one essential oils with different manufactured T-tube olfactometers, attraction and repellent efficacy were proved against ggot-mae-mi, Lycorma delicatula. Among tested essential oils, spearmint was selected to have attraction efficacy (94.1%; P<0.001). Spearmint was also showed attraction efficacy in 10 and 2.5 ul, but did not showed in 1 ul. GC analyzed chemical constituents of spearmint were tested with different concentations (10, 5, 2.5, 1 ul). Carvone were showed activity in 10 and 5 ul, but limonene did not showed the activity. When mixing two compounds were showed activity in 10, 5, 2.5 ul as 78.8, 73.5, and 69.7%, respectively. Lavender was selected to have repellent efficacy (86.7%; P<0.001). Lavender was also showed repellency in 10 and 2.5 ul, but did not showed in 1ul. GC analyzed chemical constituents of lavender were tested with different concentrations, results have the activity linalool and terpinen-4-ol in 10 and 5 ul, but linalyl acetate and caryophyllene oxide did not have the activity. Spearmint and lavender showing attraction and repellency, respectively, were keep in lure during 24 hr for penetration with different concentration(30, 20, 10 ul), and attached to the center of Fly catcher, fly sticky trap. The trap was set in the field that founded frequently the L. delicatula. The number of L. delicatula caught in the traps were counted after 5, 10, and 15 days. In attraction efficacy of 20 ul concentration wㄷre high attracted the insect(P<0.001). 30 ul concentration were also have the high attraction (P<0.01). We are now tested the control efficacy in grapevine orchard using these materials.

Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard occurs on solanaceous plants, and causes serious damage to a variety of crops in Africa and Europe; it has not been reported from Japan. Tetranychus takafujii Ehara & Ohashi was found on Solanum nigrum L. in Japan in 2001 and described as a new species in 2002. It is considered to be a Solanaceae-specialist too and it is feared to become a severe pest on solanaceous crops, once it invades them. Because T. takafujii is morphologically very similar to T. evansi, doubt has arisen about the difference between these two species. Here we avoid the issue of taxonomy and focus on a solution for the potential problems that may arise when either of the species invades solanaceous crops. The present study determines the susceptibility of three T. takafujii populations from Japan and six T. evansi populations from various countries to 11 acaricides. The LC50-values of all nine populations tested were lower than the recommended concentration of every acaricide. These results suggest that mites from all nine populations can be controlled with acaricides when they occur on crops.

A full-length sequence of a thrombin inhibitor (designated as hemalin) from the midgut of pathenogenetic Haemaphysalis longicornis has been identified. Sequence analysis shows that this gene belongs to a Kunitz-type family, containing two Kunitz domains with high homology to boophilin, the thrombin inhibitor from Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. The recombinant protein expressed in insect cells delays bovine plasma clotting time and inhibits both thrombin-induced fibrinogen clotting and platelet aggregation. A 20-kDa protein was detected from the midgut lysate with antiserum against recombinant hemalin. The gene expresses at all stages of the tick except for the egg stage and mainly in the midgut of the female adult tick. Real-time PCR analysis shows that this gene has a distinctly high expression level in the rapid bloodsucking period of the larvae, nymphs, and adults. Disruption of the hemalin gene led to a 2-day extension of the tick blood feeding period, and 27.7% of the ticks did not successfully complete the blood feeding. These findings indicate that the newly indentified thrombin inhibitor from the midgut of H. longicornis might play an important role in tick blood feeding.
