        PURPOSES : The aim of this study is to review freeze-and-thaw testing apparatuses, develop a freeze-and-thaw testing setup with a test protocol, test the freeze-and-thaw properties of soils collected from different parts of South Korea, and suggest an index for frost susceptibility criteria for soils found in South Korea. METHODS : Based on a literature review, a new freeze-thaw testing setup was developed. In addition, a test protocol was developed for freeze-thaw testing. Soils collected from different parts of South Korea and bedding sand used for block pavements were tested to determine whether the measurements from the newly developed test setup could capture important freeze-thaw characteristics of the soils. Finally, to develop local frost susceptibility criteria, a parameter including both the vertical deformation and thermal conductivity characteristics of the soils was suggested. RESULTS : The results from the laboratory experiments indicate that the newly developed freeze-and-thaw setup captures the required parameters to quantify the responses of soils subjected to cyclic freeze-and-thaw testing. In addition, a vertical deformation of up to 2.437 mm is measured. Moreover, seven soils out of the nine tested soils are classified as having a medium frost susceptibility, whereas the remaining two show low frost susceptibility. The bedding sand experiment also shows that there is a possibility of having a frost susceptible condition based on the moisture content. When submerged, the bedding sand is classified as having a medium frost susceptibility. CONCLUSIONS : The "HEART" freeze-thaw testing setup was able to capture the parameters required for evaluating the frost susceptibility of soils. This setup and testing procedure could be further used to test and prepare criteria for classifying the frost susceptibility of soils found in South Korea.

        PURPOSES : The evaluation of the road pavement thickness in an apartment complex through a methodology for estimating the number of construction vehicles is presented. We also show the usability of the new design criteria. METHODS : A field survey plan was established by conducting literature and preliminary surveys, and the structural performance of each section of the road pavement was compared through a structural analysis program. The load on construction vehicles is required for analyzing the ESAL factors of construction vehicles; it is calculated as a methodology for estimating construction vehicles because it is difficult to measure the traffic volume through visual inspection. Accordingly, the extent of damage predicted by road pavement sections in apartment complexes was analyzed to examine the possibility of applying the methodology for estimating the number of construction vehicles. RESULTS : If the road crack exceeds 20% as a result of the site survey of a previous study, structural damage to the road pavement occurs from construction vehicles. Compared to the actual traffic volume observation, an error of 5% took place; therefore, it is necessary to perform a design such that the damage caused by the load of the construction vehicle be 15% or less for proper road performance. Structural analysis through the KENPAVE program showed that the damage caused by the load of the construction vehicle exceeded 20% in all sections except section B (with a thickness of 46 cm). CONCLUSIONS : Owing to the limitations of the test construction section and environmental conditions, it is necessary to assess the effects of various variables by conducting an analysis. This is expected to be applied as a design basis considering more reliable construction vehicles.

        PURPOSES : As road pavement design in an apartment complex varies from one site to another, it is practically difficult to calculate and estimate the traffic volume of construction vehicles. Therefore, this study introduces a methodology to estimate the number of construction vehicles and use it as an indicator to evaluate the conditions of road pavement in an apartment complex. METHODS: Through a literature review and site survey, the operational status of the construction vehicles passing through the site was identified, and the factors affecting the number of construction vehicles were analyzed. The methodologies used to estimate the number of construction vehicles were verified by calculating the Cumulative Load Prediction Index (CLPI), which is a predictive index of the cumulative load on each path. By using this index, the traffic volume of construction vehicles can be estimated based on the number of households in an apartment complex. To prove this definition, we examined the surface and core conditions, and compared the results against the predicted values. RESULTS : By comparing the Cumulative Load Prediction Index with the crack rate on the pavement surface, we obtained a correlation coefficient of 0.92. Furthermore, the analysis indicated that the core condition rate would decrease as the Cumulative Load Prediction Index increased. This correlation between the Cumulative Load Prediction Index, and the pavement surface and core status demonstrates that the traffic volume can be estimated by considering the number of households. CONCLUSIONS: The Cumulative Load Prediction Index presented in this study is a suitable indicator for estimating the conditions of the road pavement in an apartment complex by considering the number of households in the complex, even if the construction processes and characteristics vary.

        PURPOSES : The recent increase in the application of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) calls for more research focusing the evaluation of pavement performance. For this matter, this study aims at evaluating pavement performance using the application rate of RAP. METHODS: To obtain mixtures with RAP aggregate application rates of 10%, 25% and 30%, the gyratory compaction method was applied regarding the mix design process for determining the optimum asphalt content (OAC). Additionally, the in-direct tension (IDT) test, deformation strength test (DST), tensile strength ratio (TSR) test and dynamic modulus (DM) test were conducted to verify the effect of RAP application rate on pavement performance. Based on the above-mentioned results, performance evaluation was done to these RAP application of design or utilization to construction site. The performance evaluation analysis was performed using the Korean Pavement Research Program (KPRP) of second level for the pavement design. RESULTS: From the DST results, the rutting resistance was improved as the application rates of RAP were increased. Additionally, all the IDT and toughness results satisfied the quality standards of the asphalt concrete pavement. However, the results did not conform with the tensile strength ratio standards with the application rates of RAP of 25% and 30%. This means that the standards, which should be considered when the addictive regeneration material is applied to the mixture when the RAP application rate is over 25%, were reflected. CONCLUSIONS : The predicted performance decreased from the second level performance analysis with the increase in the RAP application rates. All the cases satisfied the design standards (fatigue cracking, rutting depth and international roughness index (IRI)). However, the results of them closed to these standards (up to 94% (Fatigue)).

        본 연구는 합리적인 단지 내 도로포장의 표준단면을 제시하기 위해 국내외 단지 내 도로포장 설계기준, 주요 파손형태를 조사하고 다양한 포장설계 단면을 대상으로 구조해석을 수행하였다. 이때, 현장에서 사용된 보조기층재와 노상토의 시편을 채취하여 CBR 및 MR 시험을 실시하였으며, 측정한 물성치를 구조해석에 적용하였다. 다양한 현장조건을 고려한 구조해석 결과를 분석하여, 표준단면의 포장층 두께를 보조기층 20cm, 아스팔트기층 5cm, 그리고 표층 5cm로 제안하였다. 또한, 민원이 예상되는 도시지역에서는 일반적으로 아스팔트 기층을 포설한 후 공사차량을 개방하여 작업종료 후에 표층을 포설하게 되는데 이러한 여건을 고려하여 단지 내 아스팔트 콘크리트 포장 표준단면의 포장층의 두께를 보조기층 20cm, 아스팔트 기층 7cm, 그리고, 표층 5cm로 제시하였다.

        본 연구에서는 단지 내 아파트 블록포장 50곳의 현장조사를 통하여 주요 파손형태를 조사하여 공용성을 평가하였다. 공용성 평가결과에 따르면, 조사대상지역에서 9년의 공용연수를 가진 블록포장의 유지관리지수는 7.9에서 8.9사이이며, 블록포장의 상태는 양호한 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 건설교통부 '보도설치 및 관리지침'에 10년으로 제시된 보도의 교체주기는 검토할 필요가 있다는 결론을 도출하였다. 또한 블록포장의 공용성을 객관적으로 평가하기 위해서 일본블록포장협회에서 제시한 유지관리 기준과 건설교통부 '보도설치 및 관리지침'의 유지관리기준을 조합하여 국내 현실에 적합한 유지관리기준을 제시하였다. 외국과 비고할 때 국내의 블록포장의 기준에는 내구성 관련기준과 줄눈채움재 및 모래안정층의 품질관리 기준이 명확히 제시되어 있지 않다. 따라서 블록포장의 기대수명과 유지관리비용을 줄이기 위하여, 본 연구에서는 국내외 기준을 비교하여 이러한 기준들을 국내기준에 포함시킬 것을 제안하였다.
