PURPOSES : The exposed aggregate number (EAN) and mean texture depth (MTD) of exposed aggregate concrete pavement (EACP) influence the functional performance of EACP in terms of pavement noise and skid resistance. The selection of the exposure time of EACP is important because the designed EAN and MTD of EACP can be achieved when the exposure process is performed at an appropriate time. On the one hand, too early exposure may cause protrusions and unwanted removal of aggregates and mortar. On the other hand, late exposure may cause difficulty in exposure of the mortar. In this study, a method to determine the optimum exposure time for EACP is suggested using a non-destructive method. METHODS : A set of laboratory tests was performed to investigate the variation in EAN and MTD of EACP according to the elastic modulus obtained by non-destructive equipment. From the results of this investigation, the optimum exposure time using the non-destructive method and the exposure time window (ETW) method was suggested. In addition, the usefulness of ETW suggested by laboratory tests was verified from a field application. RESULTS : From the laboratory tests, it was found that the targets of the surface condition of EACP (EAN: 59 per 25 cm2, MTD: 1.39 mm) can be achieved when the concrete elastic modulus is higher than 20GPa. The proposed guideline using the non-destructive method was applied for the field construction of EACP and achieved similar results. CONCLUSIONS : It was found that the proposed guideline for determining the exposure time window based on non-destructive testing is useful.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of reducing nitrogen oxide concentration in a photocatalyst (titanium dioxide) using statistical methods such as the Anderson-Darling test. METHODS : To compare and analyze the effect of reducing the nitrogen oxide concentrations in titanium dioxide, titanium dioxide was applied to the public road, and data acquisition in terms of nitrogen oxide concentration was conducted from roads with/without applying titanium dioxide (test section and reference section, respectively). Then, the probabilities of occurrence of nitrogen oxide concentrations in the test and reference sections were estimated and compared using the Anderson-Darling test. RESULTS : According to the comparison and analysis of probabilities in the nitrogen oxide concentration of the test and reference sections, the probabilities of nitrogen oxide concentration on December 4th were estimated as ‘High’ (17.5%, 37.9%), ‘Moderate’ (30.5%, 40.8%), and ‘Low’ (52.0%, 21.3%), respectively, and on December 5th, as ‘High’ (20.6%, 39.1%), ‘Moderate’ (26.2%, 33.0%), and ‘Low’ (53.2%, 27.9%), respectively. In addition, the probabilities of nitrogen oxide concentration in the test and reference sections were analyzed on December 6th as ‘High’ (16.5%, 36.8%), ‘Moderate’ (27.9%, 38.5%), and ‘Low’ (55.6%, 24.8%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of this study, in the test section with application of titanium dioxide, the nitrogen oxide concentration was found to have a low probability, and in the reference section, the nitrogen oxide concentration was found to be higher than that in the test section. Therefore, it can be concluded that titanium dioxide applied to road facilities has a nitrogen oxide reduction effect.

PURPOSES : Korea Expressway Corporation has been working on an early remodeling project for the Jungbu Expressway to prepare methods for the rehabilitation of the old CRCP(Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement). In this study, the distress of the old CRCP was classified, and the engineering properties of the core specimens for each failure type were evaluated. Based on the test results, the concrete conditions of the existing CRCP were evaluated. This provides a basis for the pre-treatment or repair of the existing CRCP in the JungBu Expressway. METHODS : To evaluate the pavement condition of the Jungbu Expressway, existing PMS(Pavement Management System) data were analyzed, and field surveys were conducted for each pavement condition. The longitudinal rebar depth, rebar spacing, horizontal crack, and pavement thickness were examined through core sampling and non-destructive testing. In addition, the core specimens were used to evaluate the compressive strength, chloride penetration test, chloride ion penetration resistance, and freeze-thaw resistance. RESULTS : From the analysis of existing PMS data, field surveys, and laboratory tests, it was found that the old CRCP condition of the Jungbu Expressway was not good. Various types of failures occurred, and horizontal cracks at the rebar location, upward rebar locations, and rebar corrosion were confirmed. In addition, the compressive strength was considerably high, but the durability-related index was judged to be poor. CONCLUSIONS : For the remodeling project of the Jungbu Expressway, appropriate repairs should be carried out for each type of distress in the old CRCP.

PURPOSES : In general, a high-performance concrete construction method is a method of loading mixed cement and other materials on a mobile mixer equipped with a concrete plant. However, the construction cost is high because the unit cost of the mixed cement is very high and the equipment usage fee of the mobile mixer is also high. To compensate for these drawbacks, a cellular spray concrete method was developed. This is a highly functional customized concrete construction method in which admixtures are added to high-flow concrete with cellular (air bubbles) added at the site and constructed through spraying. METHODS : Field workability evaluation using cellular concrete was carried out using a spray method in 2017 and an anti-foaming agent in 2018. The test construction section was set as a new road-pavement construction site. After construction, strength, durability characteristics, and void analysis were performed to compare the construction methods. The results of laboratory tests under optimal conditions were also compared to the on-field results. By comparing the indoor mixing and the on-field results, we analyzed whether there were any problems concerning the performance expression. The economic feasibility at the initial construction stage was analyzed by comparing the existing and the cellular concrete construction methods in terms of material cost and equipment usage fee. RESULTS : In the case of cellular spray concrete, construction through spraying is cumbersome, and the need to additionally use large equipment such as a pump car and compressor constitutes a disadvantage. However, the most relevant feature is that it can be constructed not only on the floor, but also on a slope. In the case of cellular concrete with an antifoaming agent, it was possible to quickly produce high-performance concrete using on-site remixing equipment. By supplying materials to the pouring surface using a conveyor, smooth construction and construction in narrow spaces were also possible. CONCLUSIONS : The cellular concrete method allows the immediate on-site production of high-performance concrete, and it is possible to selectively apply spray construction, antifoaming agent construction, etc.

PURPOSES : In this study, we review the method and equations suggested in the usual guidelines to calculate the lane widening for curved sections, and proposed values of the widths and the amount of widening that reflected the driving trajectory of an articulated bus. METHODS : A simulation was used to obtain the trajectory of articulated bus, which is adequate for a Super-Bus Rapid Transit(S-BRT) service with the longest length of the design vehicle. This study was conducted by dividing the trajectory into curved and tangential sections, and the extent of widening was analyzed by changing the rotation angle by 5°. In addition, the results related to the amount of widening from the conducted analysis were applied to particular situation of right turns of an articulated bus at urban intersection. The possible conflict situations that may occur were analyzed. RESULTS : When analyzing the rotation angle at which the size of the driving width was set to be the largest for each lane center radius, the rotation angle for a lane center radius ( =15m) was 35°, the rotation angle for a lane center radius ( =20m) was 45°, the rotation angle for a lane center radius ( =25m) was 55°, and the rotation angle for a lane center radius ( =30m) was 60°. CONCLUSIONS : As the radius increases, the required driving width and the amount of widening decrease. The rotation angle that requires the largest driving width is presented. The results show that as the central radius ( ) of the lane increases, the amount of widening for each rotation angle decreases. In addition, based on the results of the analysis of the driving width for each rotation, the trajectory of an articulated bus was applied to an at-grade intersection to check the distance required for widening from the beginning point of the curve.

PURPOSES : Given that large-scale repair works of expressway bridge pavements have high maintenance cost and long traffic blocking time, the thin overlay method that maintains the existing pavement is attracting attention. In this study, because the bridge thin overlay has not been introduced in Korea yet, the basic physical properties of the epoxy thin overlay, which is mainly used for the bridge thin overlay, were investigated, and the skid resistance and bond performance were analyzed. METHODS : Basic physical property tests were performed on each of the epoxy binders, aggregates, and mixtures used in epoxy thin overlay. They were also compared and reviewed against foreign standards. The epoxy binders were tested for viscosity, gel time, and thermal compatibility. The aggregates were tested in terms of water absorption, specific gravity, and gradation. The compressive and flexural strengths of the mixtures were investigated. The epoxy thin overlay has the possibility of detachment of aggregates, so the skid resistance was tested according to the paving phase. In addition, to investigate the bond performance, which is the most important performance of the epoxy thin overlay, the bond strength test was performed by varying the moisture condition and treatment condition of the existing layer surface. RESULTS : The basic physical properties of the materials used in the epoxy thin overlays satisfied foreign standards except for the gradation of aggregates. The skid resistance did not satisfy the standard when the epoxy was exposed, whereas the skid resistance did satisfy the standard when the aggregates were exposed, even after the abrasion test. The bond strength of the epoxy thin overlay satisfied the standard in all cases. The bond strength was the highest when the relative humidity of the existing layer surface was 60%. CONCLUSIONS : The materials of epoxy thin overlay that could be obtained in Korea satisfied the basic physical property standards except for aggregate gradation. Given that the aggregate gradation could be adjusted, it can be concluded that the epoxy thin overlay could be introduced in Korea. In addition, it was confirmed that the skid resistance and bond strength of the epoxy thin overlay were high enough to be used in general road conditions. It was determined that the existing layer surface should maintain an optimal relative humidity of approximately 60% because the moisture condition affects the bond strength.

PURPOSES : The evaluation of the road pavement thickness in an apartment complex through a methodology for estimating the number of construction vehicles is presented. We also show the usability of the new design criteria. METHODS : A field survey plan was established by conducting literature and preliminary surveys, and the structural performance of each section of the road pavement was compared through a structural analysis program. The load on construction vehicles is required for analyzing the ESAL factors of construction vehicles; it is calculated as a methodology for estimating construction vehicles because it is difficult to measure the traffic volume through visual inspection. Accordingly, the extent of damage predicted by road pavement sections in apartment complexes was analyzed to examine the possibility of applying the methodology for estimating the number of construction vehicles. RESULTS : If the road crack exceeds 20% as a result of the site survey of a previous study, structural damage to the road pavement occurs from construction vehicles. Compared to the actual traffic volume observation, an error of 5% took place; therefore, it is necessary to perform a design such that the damage caused by the load of the construction vehicle be 15% or less for proper road performance. Structural analysis through the KENPAVE program showed that the damage caused by the load of the construction vehicle exceeded 20% in all sections except section B (with a thickness of 46 cm). CONCLUSIONS : Owing to the limitations of the test construction section and environmental conditions, it is necessary to assess the effects of various variables by conducting an analysis. This is expected to be applied as a design basis considering more reliable construction vehicles.

PURPOSES : This study proposes a method to automatically analyze the shape of asphalt concrete aggregate using computer image analysis technology. METHODS : To develop automatic aggregate shape analysis technology, we developed an aggregate shape boundary analysis algorithm that combines Watershed algorithm and morphology technology. After the algorithm was developed, it was mounted on a separate prototype and compared with the manual aggregate shape analysis method. RESULTS : As a result of the algorithm comparison, the accuracy of the aggregate shape analysis was about 90%, and there was a problem that some noise occurred. This problem was derived from external roughness, the shape of the overlapped aggregate, and sand as the main causes. Therefore, we devised a method to analyze the shape of the aggregate by adjusting the external illuminance constant or using an artificial intelligence model. CONCLUSIONS : The results of this study can be used as basic research data to help improve quality control techniques in the production of asphalt concrete in the future.

PURPOSES : This study introduces the use of instantaneous speed collected by in-vehicle sensing devices for space mean speed and time mean speed estimation. METHODS : Using probe vehicles’ instantaneous speed data and GPS location at each designated time interval enables analysts to calculate the link-based space mean speed and time mean speed for a certain time-space domain directly. This study proves the equations mathematically and compares the results of time mean speed using Wardrop’s equation and section average speed by trips. RESULTS : This study introduces the concept of link-based average speed using both time mean and space mean speed definitions. First, an unbiased space mean speed was explained for a roadway section can be calculated from high-resolution vehicle trajectory data without necessarily continuously tracking a vehicle. Second, this study proves that the average section speed by occupancy resulted in identical values to the true space mean speed formulation by Wardrop. In addition, the average section speed by trip was nearly identical to the time mean speed. CONCLUSIONS : Each section on a signalized intersection corridor yielded various speed distributions whose parameters varied as measurements were taken closer to the intersection proper. By exploring the space mean speed with speed distribution, the intersection impact area can be defined more accurately.

PURPOSES : This study focuses on advance traffic information to prevent secondary traffic accidents on express highways. The purpose of this study is to analysis the optimal scenario by evaluating the effect of each advance traffic information scenarios using virtual driving simulation. METHODS : By designing traffic information scenarios and services with a combination of VMS and mobile PUSH notifications, driver behavior in the event of a traffic accident was analyzed. For this, a simulation environment was designed through engineering analysis. Through virtual driving simulation, the driver's deceleration point and the perception-reaction time are analyzed. RESULTS : Four scenarios were designed and reviewed so that VMS and mobile PUSH notification can be provided simultaneously after the driver drove for 5 km. As a result of driving with 30 drivers, the drivers reacted fastest when VMS was installed, followed by mobile PUSH notification, VMS+mobile PUSH notification, and NOTHING. CONCLUSIONS : When designing traffic information service, it was observed that providing information through VMS alone is more efficient than providing two services of traffic information. Therefore, it can be used as basic data for preventing secondary accidents on express highway.

PURPOSES : There are generally various driving behaviors in toll collection areas, including lane changing, merging and diverging, and other behaviors. Because of these behaviors, accident risk and traffic congestion may occur. To mitigate these problems, multi-lane electronic toll collection systems have been developed with a high-speed limit of 80 km/h. This study was conducted to investigate travel speed changes and effects through multi-lane electronic toll collection systems with a high-speed limit. METHODS : Traffic simulations were conducted using VISSIM. Before conducting simulations, driving behavior around the toll collection areas was observed, and field data were collected based on drones for peak and non-peak hours. In addition, safety effect evaluations were conducted based on conflict analyses using the SSAM software. RESULTS : Through multi-lane electronic toll collection systems with a high-speed limit, the travel speed on the toll collection area was increased, and traffic operational efficiencies were identified. However, different speed variations were produced as observation locations in toll collection areas. Speed variations were mitigated at most locations except the area within the tollbooth because of the high speed limit for multi-lane electronic tollbooth. CONCLUSIONS : It was important to manage lane-changing activities, and this may influence traffic operational effects. Safety effects were also identified through conflict analyses.

PURPOSES : This study aims to deduce the appropriate interval of cross passage for small vehicle exclusive roads within urban underground roads to ensure safety. METHODS : This study evaluated evacuation safety by fire and evacuation simulations. The simulation was applied to a passenger-caronly urban underground road, which was performed in the entry/exit section with a gradient of 6.0% and the mainline on level grade. The values of the variables for the simulations were determined to be close to the actual situation based on of the statistics and the results of previous studies. In the simulation scenario, the cross passage interval was visible. The evacuation safety was evaluated by comparing the “evacuation completion time” and the “smoke diffusion time.” Evacuation safety can be desirable when the evacuation completion time is shorter than the smoke diffusion time. RESULTS : According to the results of the simulation, the desirable cross passage interval is 180 m for the entry/exit sections with a 6% gradient in passenger-car-only tunnels. This criterion may be prolonged to an interval of 210 m and a width of 0.9 m for the construction reduction, based on the results of the statistical analysis. CONCLUSIONS : According to the results of this study, the risk indices of the “Small Vehicles Road Tunnel Fire Safety Facility Installation and Management Guidelines” may be supplemented by the tunnel class and the gradient of the entry/exit section. In addition, the guideline may provide an improved interval of evacuation cross passage and the width of the cross passage door by the safety index.

PURPOSES : Accidents involving autonomous vehicle continue to occur. However, research on autonomous vehicle monitoring has been insufficient. The purpose of this study is to develop monitoring indicators from the perspective of vehicles and road infrastructure for the safe driving of autonomous vehicles. In addition, the purpose is to monitor autonomous vehicles and road environments using the monitoring indicators developed, as well as to analyze the characteristics of road sections where autonomous vehicles exhibit abnormalities. METHODS : Data from Pangyo Zero Shuttle, an autonomous vehicle, were used in this study. Infrastructure data installed in Pangyo Zero City were used. The data were collected from June 2019 to July 2019, during the normal driving period of the zero shuttle. The five monitoring indicators were developed by combining the vehicle operation information table collected from the V2X device of the zero shuttle and the road environment monitoring detail table collected from the infrastructure data with the road section table. In addition, an analysis of road characteristics with frequent errors is performed for each monitoring indicator. RESULTS : The three monitoring indicators from the perspective of the vehicle allowed monitoring of the sensor error, sensor communication error, and yaw rate error of the autonomous vehicle's timing and road section. In addition, the two monitoring indicators from the infrastructure perspective enabled the monitoring of events and road surface conditions on roads where autonomous vehicles drive. As a result of analyzing the road characteristics that frequently caused errors by monitoring indicators, sensor errors frequently occurred in the section waiting to enter the left-turn lane. Sensor communication errors are left-turn standby and have occurred frequently on road sections where U-turns are allowed. Finally, yaw rate error occurred frequently in sections of roads where there were no induction lines or where changes to lanes occurred frequently. CONCLUSIONS : The five monitoring indicators developed in this study allowed the monitoring of autonomous vehicles and roads. The results of this study are expected to help the safe driving of autonomous vehicles and contribute to the detection of autonomous driving abnormalities and the provision of real-time road condition information through further analysis.
