PURPOSES : This study compared the performance evaluation of a hot mix asphalt (HMA) and asphalt mixture of a warm-antistrip agent. METHODS : A mix design applying Korean standards was conducted to evaluate the performance evaluation. Thereafter, the quality standard evaluation of the asphalt mixture produced was conducted, and if all quality standards were satisfied, a performance evaluation was conducted. Types of performance evaluation included the Hamburg wheel tracking test and dynamic modulus test.
RESULTS : As a result of the Hamburg wheel tracking test, the asphalt mixture with a warm-antistrip agent obtained a lower sedimentation value at 10000 times and 20000 times. This result is considered to have higher plastic deformation resistance of the asphalt mixture with a Warm-antistrip agent than HMA. The U.S. Department of Transportation stipulates that plastic deformation resistance is excellent if the asphalt mixture does not exceed 20,000 times the precipitate of 20 mm. Therefore, we confirmed that the plastic deformation resistance of the asphalt mixture with a warm-antistrip agent was excellent. Additionally, the master curve was analyzed by synthesizing the results of the dynamic modulus test. When analyzing the low load cycle at the bottom left of the master curve, the dynamic modulus value of the master curve was higher in the asphalt mixture with a warm-antistrip agent than in the HMA. In addition, when analyzing the high load cycle part, the dynamic modulus of the HMA was measured to be higher than that of the asphalt mixture with a warm-antistrip agent. Accordingly, the resistance to fatigue cracking of the asphalt mixture with a warm-antistrip agent was considered superior to that of the HMA.
CONCLUSIONS : As a result, we confirmed that the asphalt mixture with a warm-antistrip agent that satisfies the Korean quality standards had better plastic deformation and fatigue resistance for all performance evaluation tests conducted in this study than the HMA. However, since the Hamburg wheel tracking test did not significantly differ in the amount of sedimentation in the performance evaluation tests and the mixture using one additive was compared with HMA, studies on the effects of various additives containing warm-antistrip agents are required.
PURPOSES : Abroad, road pavement materials vary depending on the speed and traffic volume of vehicles, but owing to the negative perception of block pavements, sidewalks, parking lots, and parks are primarily used in Korea. In addition, since speed restriction policies such as safety speed 5030 have been implemented recently, it is necessary to use block pavements for roadways, which are considered to have the effect of reducing speed. Therefore, it is necessary not only to actively discuss the introduction of block pavements for roadways but to continue research on the effectiveness of the performance evaluation and to change the perception of roads in Korea.
METHODS : In this study, five indicators (surface damage, surface temperature, driving speed of vehicle, noise, and suspended dust) were selected for a sustainable road environment. The performance evaluation index of block pavement for roadways was decided according to the domestic and international literature, and the data were collected based on the evaluation index in the section with block pavement for roadways in Korea.
RESULTS : The damage rate was calculated 0.35% according to the breakage of block and Maintenance Control Index(MCI) was ranked A~B even though the pavement was used for more than 4~5 years. The surface temperature of block pavement has a temperature reduction effect of 7 ℃ compared with ordinary asphalt pavement and a speed reduction of approximately 4 km/h on average; therefore, the traffic calming effect of block pavements can be expected. The noise of block pavement and asphalt pavement exhibited a similar level, and the noise level experienced by pedestrians did not change significantly as a result of frequency analysis. The measurement of road suspended dust around the road confirmed the possibility of reducing the concentration of road dust in the air owing to the smooth surface drainage and the results indicated the possibility.
CONCLUSIONS : The results of this study are expected to contribute to the recognition and functional improvement of domestic block pavements by continuous monitoring to ensure the reliability of blocks. In addition, it is necessary to ensure the reliability of the quality and functional evaluation of paving materials through continuous on-site monitoring.
PURPOSES : In this study, a driving simulation testing equipment was developed to derive the optimal longitudinal tinting that can reduce the lateral vibration of the vehicle. Various types of longitudinal textures and tires were evaluated through simulation testing with the equipment. Based on the results, 3×3×16mm tinning as the optimal longitudinal texture was selected among 8 textures.
METHODS : Based on the literature review, the causes of lateral vibration were analyzed, and parts and types for testing equipment development were reviewed. Driving simulation with testing equipment was conducted considering various textures and tires. To verify the test results, finite element analysis was performed under the similar conditions. And field test for two textures was conducted to find the optimal longitudinal texture.
RESULTS : Based on the literature review, driving simulation test, finite element analysis and field test, longitudinal texture of 3×3×16mm is show the better performance compared to 7 textures. CONCLUSIONS : 3×3×16mm as longitudinal tinning for fresh concrete is show less lateral vibration than 3×3×12mm.
PURPOSES : Recently, air pollution caused by particulate matter has been worsening. Among the substances generating particulate matter, NOx is the main precursor of particulate matter and is widely distributed in areas with a high volume of traffic. TiO2 has been used as a material for removing NOx through a chemical reaction as a photocatalyst. In this context, the reduction of NOx through TiO2 concrete is proposed. However, the research on the surface deterioration on the performance of TiO2 concrete is not documented yet. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term durability and NOx removal efficiency of TiO2 concrete by considering the concrete surface deterioration.
METHODS : Freezing–thawing resistance test (KS F 2456) and scaling test (ASTM C 672) were performed to investigate the variation in the TiO2 penetration distribution and NOx removal efficiency of TiO2 concrete corresponding to surface deterioration. The long-term durability of TiO2 concrete was evaluated through an environmental resistance test and changes in TiO2 penetration depth and distribution characteristics. In addition, the NOx removal efficiency of TiO2 concrete was evaluated as surface deterioration occurs. RESULTS : As a result of the freeze–thawing resistance test, a relative dynamic elastic modulus of more than 80 % was detected. In addition, a TiO2 penetration depth of 0.3 mm, NOx removal efficiency of 11.2 %, and a 30 % of TiO2 surface prediction mass ratio were achieved after 300 cycles. As a result of visual observation of the scaling test, “0, no scaling” was secured. After 50 cycles of scaling test, the TiO2 penetration depth, NOx removal efficiency, and TiO2 surface prediction mass ratio were 0.3 mm, 36.3 %, and 63 %, respectively. Through the results of the environmental resistance test, the excellent long-term durability and NOx removal efficiency of TiO2 concrete were confirmed.
CONCLUSIONS : As a result of the experiment, long-term durability and NOx removal efficiency of TiO2 concrete were secured. The application of TiO2 concrete can be a good alternative with long-term performance and durability.
PURPOSES : This study aimed to develop data conversion of NGII HD maps to OpenDRIVE format for virtual road implementation for autonomous-driving verification.
METHODS : A method of defining the reference line of OpenDRIVE on the centerline of an NGII HD map is proposed. According to the construction characteristics of the NGII HD map, the optimal conversion method through parametric cubic polynomials was used in the form of piecewise and clamped cubic polynomials.
RESULTS : The study focused on curved roads that may cause problems when converting HD map data into OpenDRIVE formats. As a result of data conversion, a reference line was defined to precisely follow the alignment of NGII HD maps drawn based on MMS data, and a lively virtual road was reproduced through road lane width and lane expression.
CONCLUSIONS : A virtual road in the same environment as a real road, which is one of the important factors in verifying autonomous driving technology through virtual driving simulation, was constructed. The piecewise-polynomial normal was 0.008 m on average, and as a result of calculating the distance between the endpoint coordinates of the road object and the endpoint coordinates of the converted road object on the NGII HD map, the difference between the two points was 0.163 m on average. The clamped cubic polynomials normal was observed to be an average of 0.170 m.
PURPOSES : The surface distress of asphalt pavements is one of the major factors affecting the safety of road users. The aim of this study was to analyze the factors influencing the occurrence of surface distress and statistically predict its annual change to contribute to more reasonable asphalt pavement management using the data periodically collected by the national highway pavement data management system.
METHODS : In this study, the factors that were expected to influence the surface distress were determined by reviewing the literature. The normality was secured by changing the forms of the variables to make the distribution of the variables got closer to normal distribution. In addition, min-max normalization was performed to minimize the effect of the unit and magnitude of the candidate independent variables on the dependent variable. The final candidate independent variables were determined by analyzing the correlation between the annual surface distress change and each candidate independent variable. In addition, a prediction model was developed by performing data grouping and multi-regression analysis. RESULTS : An annual surface distress change prediction model was developed using present surface distress, age, and below 0 ℃ days as the independent variables. As a result of sensitivity analysis, the surface distress affected the annual surface distress change the most. The positive correlation between the dependent variable and each independent variable demonstrated engineering and statistical meaningfulness of the prediction model.
CONCLUSIONS : The surface distress in the future can be predicted by applying the annual surface distress prediction model to the national highway asphalt pavement sections with survey data. In addition, the prediction model can be applied to the national highway pavement condition index (NHPCI) evaluating the national highway asphalt pavement conditions to be used in the prediction of future NHPCI.
PURPOSES : Recently, the generation of industrial by-products has been increased owing to the increase in electrical power consumption. This experimental study investigated a special mortar development using outstanding benefits of porous structures in heavy oil fly ash (HOFA) and bottom ash (BA) to reduce heat transfer and weight of tunnel repair mortar.
METHODS : Based on the concept of materials usable for this objective being porous and light, the physical and chemical properties of heavy oil fly ash and bottom ash were analyzed to determine the application possibility for tunnel repair mortar. In addition to satisfying this primary requirement, the research aimed at determining the relationships between the characteristics of porous structures and effectiveness of reducing weight and thermal conductivity. This study was undertaken on the use of bottom ash as fine aggregate and heavy oil ash as filler in mortar mix proportion. Four different levels of bottom ash (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, and 5%), and 10%, 15%, and 20% of heavy oil fly ash were investigated to determine the proper replacement amount within the designed specification. According to the analytic results on the effectiveness of both by-products and chemical additives, the repair mortar with optimum mixture proportion was investigated using various tests including thermal conductivity and porosity.
RESULTS : The use of porous by-products increased the demand for mixing water in obtaining the required flowability, but the compressive strength did not decrease significantly in proportion by adding an amount of bottom ash. Based on the results, bottom ash can be replaced with aggregate as much as 50%, but adding an amount of heavy oil ash is suggested as below 10% in formulation.
CONCLUSIONS : The optimized repair mortar, which was produced by conclusive formulation, was evaluated as a high-performance material to repair tunnels with the effectiveness of porous and remarkable physical properties.
PURPOSES : This study was conducted to evaluate the physical properties of micro-foamed asphalt binders. Surfactants and water-soluble anti-stripping agent were used to improve the performance of the foamed asphalt binder, and a domestically developed foamed asphalt generator was used for the micro-foamed asphalt binder. The results of this study can be used as technical data for the domestic application of foamed asphalt technology.
METHODS : To evaluate the physical properties of the micro-foamed asphalt binder, basic properties such as penetration, viscosity, softening point, and ductility were evaluated. Additionally, DSR and BBR tests were performed to confirm the change in the performance grade of the micro-formed asphalt binder when using surfactants, water-soluble anti-stripping agent, and water.
RESULTS : Of the results of evaluating the physical properties of the micro-foamed asphalt binder containing surfactant confirmed that the kinematic viscosity was reduced by 12.5% compared with the straight asphalt binder, which indirectly confirmed that compaction is possible even at low temperatures when producing the asphalt mixture. In addition, the PG grade of straight asphalt and micro-foamed asphalt binder was PG 64-22. This result indicates that surfactants, water-soluble anti-stripping agent, and water did not significantly affect the PG grade of the asphalt binder.
CONCLUSIONS : The properties of the micro-foamed asphalt binder were confirmed through the evaluation of the physical and rheological properties of the foamed asphalt binder to which the surfactant and water-soluble anti-stripping agent were applied, and we determined that it can be used as a technical material for the revitalization of Korean foamed asphalt technology.
PURPOSES : This study aimed to explore crowding impedance for high-risk travelers on various modes of public transit during the COVID-19 pandemic and develop a transport policy to encourage the proper use of public transport.
METHODS : A stated preference survey was conducted to investigate the behaviors of travelers on various modes of public transit, with special emphasis on crowding inside vehicles. Multinomial logit-based modeling was used to estimate the explanatory variables identified as parameters based on the surveyed data. A crowding multiplier was adopted to represent the behavioral differences for the high-risk travelers on various modes of public transit.
RESULTS : The established model was solved using the ‘mlogit’ R package program to estimate the identified parameters. The results demonstrated significant behavioral difference for the high-risk travelers on public transit during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed crowding multiplier successfully captured the reduced likelihood of high-risk travelers to be sensitive to crowding on the subway; furthermore, it revealed that non-crowding travelers on the subway are less sensitive to crowding than bus travelers.
CONCLUSIONS : This study estimated crowding impedance for high-risk travelers on various modes of public transit during the COVID-19 pandemic and suggested an appropriate transport policy for those travelers.
