PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the properties of high-performance concrete and compare them with the properties of ternary blended cement (OPC 60% : BFS 30% : FA 10%) as applied to all-in-one bridge decks. High-performance concrete modified with styrene-butadiene latex (SB latex) was evaluated for strength development and durability through its compressive strength and chloride ion diffusion coefficient. METHODS: The compressive strength test was conducted according to KS F 2405, and the average value of the three specimens was used as the result at each stage. The chloride ion diffusion test was performed at 28 days, 56 days, and 365 days according to NT BUILLD 492. The chloride ion penetration test was conducted according to ASTM C 1202. RESULTS: For the compressive strength of the high-performance concrete, the blast furnace slag 40% replacement (BFS40) mixture had the most similar results to those of the ternary blended cement. The BFS40 mixture exhibited a lower compressive strength at 3 days than the latex modified concrete (LMC) mixture used for the bridge deck pavement, whereas it exhibited a 3.7-9.8% higher compressive strength at 7 days. In addition, the BFS40 mixture had the lowest diffusion coefficient, which was 49.1~59.0% lower than that of the LMC mixture. Mixing with latex tended to decrease in charge passed compared to Plain which is only used ternary blended cement, and showed excellent watertighness (rated “very low”), which is lower than 1,000 coulombs in all mixtures with latex. CONCLUSIONS : The BFS40 mixture exhibited excellent compressive strength, chloride ion permeability resistance, and the lowest chloride ion diffusion coefficient although it included a small amount of latex, which makes it more expensive than the current LMC mixture. It is believed that it is possible to secure excellent economic efficiency and durability by using lesser latex than that in the LMC mixture and using a mixture of the blast furnace slag instead.

PURPOSES : The use of reclaimed aggregate has been recently increasing with the increase in the amount of waste asphalt concrete. The application of these materials can reduce the properties of the asphalt pavement when compared with the case when recycled aggregate is not used. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the asphalt mixtures with various mix ratios of reclaimed aggregate. METHODS : To measure the performance, the following tests using the mixtures prepared in accordance with the Korea Standards were conducted: Hamburg wheel-tracking test, third-scale model mobile loading simulator test, and dynamic modulus test. RESULTS : The test results of the Hamburg wheel-tracking test indicate that the water resistance was similar in each mixture and the plastic deformation resistance was good in the high-ratio reclaimed aggregate mixture. In the case of the third-scale model mobile loading simulator test, the plastic deformation demonstrated a high resistance in the high-ratio reclaimed aggregate mixture. The results were similar to those of the Hamburg wheel-tracking test; however, the cracking resistance was poor with a high recycled aggregate incorporation ratio. The dynamic modulus test results demonstrated excellent resistance to plastic deformation at a relatively high ratio of reclaimed aggregate admixture. The crack resistance was weakened when a high ratio of reclaimed aggregate mixture was used. CONCLUSIONS: As the reclaimed aggregate content increased, the plastic deformation resistance increased and the crack resistance decreased.

PURPOSES: This study evaluated the effect of fog seal treatment utilizing an agricultural oil-based asphalt concrete sealant (ABCS) on the long-term performance of an asphalt pavement. METHODS: Fog seal treatment using ABCS was applied on 800 m of the pavement section in the test section with a total length of 2,400 m; the remaining pavement section was not considered for this treatment. A series of laboratory and field tests were conducted on both sections, including a Marshall stability test, penetration test, viscosity test, skid resistance test, and pavement surface macrotexture test. In addition, the pavement condition index (PCI) was determined 8 years after the ABCS application to evaluate the effect of the ABCS treatment on the pavement’s long-term performance. RESULTS : The ABCS-treated section exhibited a PCI of 75, whereas the non-treated section exhibited a value of 64. Furthermore, a MicroPAVERTM‚ pavement management system determined that the pavement deterioration rates (i.e., drops in PCI) were 3.6 and 5.1 per year for the ABCS-treated and non-treated sections, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : The results of the series of laboratory and field tests revealed that the ABCS treatment increased the pavement performance life by approximately 3.5 years.

PURPOSES : In this study, a series of fundamental falling head permeability tests were conducted on a binary particle mix bedding to determine the minimum water level, bedding layer thickness, and amount of dust that can result in the stable permeability with high repeatability. The determined condition is used to develop a CFD-DEM coupled clogging model that can explain the movement of dust particles in flowing water of a block pavement system. METHODS: A binary particle mixture is utilized to experimentally simulate an ideal bedding layer of a block pavement system. To obtain a bedding layer with maximum packing degree, the well-known particle packing degree model, i.e., the modified Toufar model, was utilized. The permeability of the bedding layer for various water levels, bedding layer thicknesses, and amounts of dust was calculated. The permeability for a small water level drop was also plotted to evaluate the effect of dust on the bedding layer clogging. RESULTS: It was observed that a water level of 100 mm, bedding depth of 70 mm, and dust amount of 0.3 g result in a stable permeability condition with high repeatability. The relationship between the minimum dust amount and surface clogging of the bedding layer was suggested based on the evaluation of the volumetric calculation of the particle and void and the permeability change in the test. CONCLUSIONS: The test procedure to determine the minimum water level, bedding thickness, and dust amount was successfully proposed. The mechanism of clogging on the surface of the bedding layer was examined by relating the volumetric characteristics of dust to the clogging surface.

PURPOSES : In this study, a numerical clogging model that can be used to realistically visualize the movement of particles in cylindrical permeability test equipment was proposed based on the system coupling of computational fluid dynamics with the discrete element method and experimental permeability test results. This model can also be used to simulate the interaction of dust particles with bedding particles. METHODS: A 4-way system coupling method with multiphase volumes of the fluid model and porous media model was proposed. The proposed model needs to consider the influence of flow on the dust particles, interaction between the dust particles, and interaction between the dust particles and bedding layer particles. The permeability coefficient of the bedding layer in cylindrical permeability test equipment was not calculated by using the permeability test result, but was estimated by using the particle packing model and Ergun model. RESULTS : The numerical simulation demonstrated a good agreement with the experimental test results in terms of permeability and drain time. Additionally, the initial movement of particles due to the sudden drain hole opening was successfully captured by the numerical model. CONCLUSIONS : A 4-way coupling model was sufficient to simulate the water flow and particle movement in cylindrical permeability test equipment. However, additional tests and simulation are required to utilize the model for more realistic block pavement systems.

PURPOSES : This study was conducted to analyze the problems of the permeable block by objectively evaluating the quality of the permeable block and providing basic data to improve the quality and construction defect of the permeable block pavement in accordance with the continuously increasing demand of the permeable block. METHODS : In this study, we evaluated the current quality standard suitability of nine products to evaluate the current quality level of domestic production permeable blocks. The evaluation items were evaluated for surface layer thickness, block dimension, strength, and permeability coefficient, and the Korea Standard suitability for these evaluation items was analyzed. In addition, a three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to determine the effect of vehicle load on the deformation of block pavement structure. RESULTS : The results demonstrated that the surface layer (colored layer) thicknesses of domestically produced permeable block products were different according to the quality standards, and the dimensions were evaluated to be excellent for domestic permeable blocks currently being produced and delivered. In addition, the strength and permeability coefficient evaluation result demonstrated that all products meet the strength and permeability coefficient quality standards, but the correlation between these strengths and permeability coefficients is not high. The quality standard of strength and permeability coefficients is evaluated as being sufficiently achieved by domestic production technology. CONCLUSIONS: The intensity and permeability coefficients measured in this study were in line with the quality standards; however, the variable coefficient was found to have a significant difference in the quality control level from a maximum of 26% to a minimum 1.7%.

PURPOSES : In this study, we evaluated the quality levels of abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance to the surface layer (colored layer) by using an overseas abrasion resistance test method to confirm the quality suitability of the concrete block surface for a domestic production permeable block. METHODS : In this study, a new evaluation item for increased durability apart from the quality standard of the permeable block was considered, namely, evaluation of the durability of the surface layer and the freeze-thaw resistance of the permeable block itself by EN 1338, ASTM C 779, 994, and GR 4009 (KS F 4419). RESULTS : The abrasion resistance test for the permeable block revealed that there were relative differences according to the different test methods. However, it was observed that if the ASTM C 779 test results did not meet the wear resistance quality standards, it did not satisfy ASTM C 944 and EN 1338. The ASTM C 779 test result was analyzed to have the highest objectivity and discernment, and this test method was proposed as a permeable block wear test method. In addition, the freeze-thaw resistance test method by the GR 4007 standard can be measured by strength, so it is possible to evaluate the resistance of the permeable block through this test method. CONCLUSIONS : The abrasion resistance test and freeze-thaw resistance test can contribute to the improvement of the permeable block when added to the current quality evaluation tests.

PURPOSES: This study determines the life of asphalt overlay over old concrete pavements for various times of overlay, using the actual 30- year performance history of the Jungbu Expressway. The results from this study can be used as the basis for decisions on the proper time for overlay, and can also provide information for life cycle cost analysis. METHODS : The maintenance history of the Jungbu Expressway and traffic database 30 years after construction were analyzed. The durations between the first overlay and subsequent overlay for each section of the pavement were analyzed for the entire Jungbu Expressway. The durations were analyzed in terms of both years and the ESAL traffic volumes. RESULTS : 1. The life of the asphalt overlay over the old concrete pavements depended on the time of overlay in terms of both age and cumulative ESALs. A strong correlation was observed between the overlay life and the cumulative ESALs at the time of overlay. 2. The life of the second overlay at the same section was significantly shorter than the first overlay. For JCP, the average lives of the first and second overlays were 6.1 and 2.4 years, respectively. For CRCP, they were 4.8 and 2.7 years, respectively. The main reason for the shorter life of the overlay for CRCP may be that the overlay time was generally later than that for the JCP. 3. The life of the overlay was analyzed according to its materials. SMA exhibited the best performance, followed by CRM. CONCLUSIONS: Life of the overlay reduced with the time of overlay especially in terms of cumulative ESALs, and the life of the second overlay at the same section was significantly shorter than the first overlay. The results can be used in the decision making of the time of overlay and in the life cycle cost analysis.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop a solar powered block pavement system satisfying the road design criteria in Korea. The concrete block pavement system was chosen as the most suitable for development at the current level of technology. METHODS : A new solar block pavement system was conducted by seperating the solar module from the concrete block. The solar panel module is responsible for the solar powered system and the solar concrete block is responsible for the vehicle load support. Quality criteria for block pavements in Korea were collected to select the appropriate quality criteria for a solar block pavement system. The laboratory tests conducted were slip resistance test, compressive strength test and absorption rate test of the concrete blocks, flexural strength test of the acrylic protection panel, and UTM load test of the solar panel module. Solar power measurement was also conducted at the field test section for field performance evaluation. RESULTS : The acrylic protection panels were selected as 15mm thick panels with diagonal patterns of 45°, considering the power generation efficiency, appropriate thickness of the solar power modules, slip resistance and flexural strength. The results of the laboratory tests for evaluating the structural performance of concrete blocks demonstrated that the compressive strength and absorption rate were 22.7 MPa and 3.4% on average, respectively. From these results, it can be observed that the concrete blocks of the solar block pavement system satisfy the block pavement criteria in Korea. As a result of the UTM load test of the solar panel module, the maximum compressive load was found to be 26 tonf on average, and it was confirmed that damage does not occur under a passenger car load. CONCLUSIONS : A new solar block pavement system was developed by seperating the solar module and concrete block. As a results of the laboratory and field tests, both the solar module and concrete block satisfied the quality criteria for block pavement in Korea.

PURPOSES: A hard shoulder lane (HSL) is a method of solving severe traffic congestion on an expressway. Recently, it has been applied to several expressways in Korea, and there have been numerous positive effects, which include increasing the road capacity and reducing traffic congestion. However, these effects have been limited due to tunnels which created a‘ bottle-neck’effect in HSL application for longer road segments. In the tunnel sections, an HSL is generally not operational owing to problems such as narrow roads and the risk of accidents. If an HSL can be extended to tunnel segments, great positive effects can be achieved. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate driver behavior and stability to investigate the risk of HSL in tunnels. METHODS: The Driving Simulator experiments were conducted using some scenarios for the Geumnam and Seojong tunnels on the Seoul- Chuncheon Highway. Based on data from the experiments such as running speed, lateral replacement, and steering handling, the running stabilities of participants were analyzed. In addition, traffic flow data from VDS(Vehicle Detection System) were analyzed as before-after studies. RESULTS: Although there were some differences in driving behaviors, most participants showed safe driving behavior at a speed of less than 50 km/h. CONCLUSIONS : Based on driving behaviors and traffic flow analyses, it is concluded that HSL in tunnels can be an alternative to increase efficiency based on safe driving environments for speeds of below 50 km/h.

PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that affect the severity of children’s traffic accidents using the ordered probit model, and to contribute to a safer road environment for children. METHODS: This study used children’s traffic accident data during the last four years in the Incheon Metropolitan area. At this point, to analyze only the direct damage caused to children, the analysis was made of accidents where the victim was under 13 years old. Data from a total of 1,110 accidents was collected. When the model was constructed, as it was judged that there could be a difference in factors affecting accident occurrence depending on the zone characteristics, the model was divided into school and non-school zones. RESULTS: The accident content (severity) is divided into four stages (fatal injury, serious injury, minor injury and injury report) to construct the order-typed probit model. For the analysis, 65 variables of 17 categories were included in the model. The statistical package STATA 13.1 was used to analyze the variables affecting the accident severity with a confidence level of 90% (α·=0.1). Consequently, a total of 15 variables were found to have a statistically significant effect on accident severity in a school zone. In contrast, a total of 22 variables were found to have a statistically significant effect on accident severity in non-school zones. Four variables (daytime, weekday, victim age, intersection) were significant in both models. CONCLUSIONS: Among the significant variables found in school zones, signal violation and type of vehicle (line bus, rent car, bus, business other vehicles) had a relatively greater effect on the accident severity than the other variables. In non-school zones, eight variables comprising daytime, head-on collision, crossing, over-speed, gender of victim (male), victim age, type of vehicle (construction machinery), driver age (50-59) were found to be significant variables. In conclusion, as well as eliminating factors that can lead to accident reductions, it is necessary to consider zone characteristics to reduce the severity of children’s accidents and promote children’s traffic safety.

PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of superelevation on the existing local freeway ramps where occurrence of traffic incidents are concentrated in order to improve the safety of ramp curves. Using a superelevation slope test conducted on Cheong-ju interchange as a case study, operating speed and lateral friction coefficients are measured, and the safety before and after increasing the superelevation is analyzed. METHODS: First, the actual operating speed of freeway ramps is measured for analysis and the 85th-percentile speed is calculated. This is followed by a measurement change in the lateral friction coefficient because of an increase in superelevation slope from 6% to 10%. Based on the change in lateral friction coefficient, an evaluation of the safety of driving mechanics is carried out and suggestions for the most appropriate superelevation slopes are presented. RESULTS: The operating speed (V85) of the loop ramp increases by up to 5.6 km/h after increasing the superelevation slope, and the operating speed (V85) of reverse ramp curve increases by up to 6.1 km/h. However, the standard deviation of the speed between each section has decreased, making it easier to drive smoothly. Although some sections of the loop ramp show poor safety due to the difference between actual and design friction coefficients in the safety evaluation before the increase of superelevation slope, the lateral force decreases after the increase of superelevation slope, improving the safety of the road. CONCLUSIONS : Currently, Korea’s freeway ramps pose a safety risk to vehicles traveling at speeds higher than the design speed. To improve the safety of freeway ramps, analysis on the effect of increase in superelevation slope found that the lateral friction coefficient decreases, which in turn improves the safety of freeway ramps.

PURPOSES: This research analyzes how the distribution of users changes when roads that impede walking are transformed into a pedestrian friendly space. The scope of the areas that are benefiting is presented, and the results can be used as basic data for demand generation and as indicators of policy judgments used in economic analysis. METHODS: Using statistical models, the scope of park users was analyzed by park type and the distribution of park and eco-friendly space users was compared. Differences in the moving distance of users was compared by using ANOVA and T-test analysis, and the distribution of users was compared by Kdenicity and Cumulative distribution plots. RESULTS : Based on the cumulative 90 percent distribution, the user’s walking range is about 1.3 km in small-scale parks, 2.2 km in ecofriendly spaces and 3.8 km in the western highway. The Anyangcheon Waterfront Area currently has a pedestrian impact zone of about 1 km (the 10% utilization rate) and will increase to 3.8 km after the project. CONCLUSIONS : Pedestrian-friendly road projects can improve access to existing waterfront areas. The walking user’s range will be wider after completing the project and has a different range to existing parks in Seoul.
