PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to establish a scientific and rational structure pavement maintenance technique and management standard through field investigation and analysis method development for measuring damage to structure pavement such that fundamental quality improvement can be promoted and the life of pavement prolonged. METHODS : In this study, the crack, plastic deformation, IRI, and SPI values measured using the existing RoadScanner of a corresponding section, as well as the relative dielectric constant values of a lower deck measured using a ground penetrating radar are reduced. The results of a small impact load test are verified by comparing the modulus of elasticity measured. RESULTS : In the Hongjecheon Overpass, when comparing the suspicion points of deterioration between the center of the lane and the 25 measurement data points of the wheel pass section based on the elastic modulus of the light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD), it is discovered that the lane comprises four centers (16%) and 18 wheelpaths (72%). The percentage of suspected deterioration points in the center is higher than that in the wheelpath. In addition, in the case of the Seoho Bridge, by comparing the suspicious points of deterioration for 11 measurement data points in the middle of the lane and the wheelpath section based on the elastic modulus of the LFWD, it is discovered that five points (45%) in both the middle of the lane and the wheel pass are similar. CONCLUSIONS : In this study, a comparative analysis of the LFWD elastic modulus and SPI factors (crack rate, plastic deformation, and IRI) of the Hongjecheon Overpass and Seoho Bridge is conducted to confirm the factors of pavement breakage. Among them, it is confirmed that it affects the pavement condition the most; however, to consider the LFWD elastic modulus as an evaluation criterion for future structure pavement, the data points must be verified via additional experiments to ensure high reliability.

PURPOSES : In this study, a method for evaluating concrete bridge deck deterioration using three-dimensional (3D) ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey data and its in situ application are discussed. METHODS : Field surveys are conducted on two bridges in Yongsan-gu (Bridge A) and Seodaemun-gu (Bridge B) in Seoul using 3D GPR. The obtained survey data are used to calculate the dielectric constant map of each bridge using the extended common midpoint method. In addition, random points on both bridges are selected for the chloride content test in accordance with the KS F 2713 standard. The results from the dielectric constant map and chloride content test are compared. RESULTS : For Bridge A, it is discovered that the percentage of sections with a dielectric constant of 5.0 or less is 1.57%, whereas that above 5.0 is 98.43%; this indicates that the percentage of deteriorated sections for Bridge A is low. Meanwhile, for Bridge B, the dielectric constants calculated for the entire bridge exceed 5.0, which suggests no deterioration for Bridge B. Moreover, all the points selected for the chloride content test have less than 0.15% chloride content and have dielectric constants ranging from 5.0 to 7.0, which are favorable condition for the bridge deck. CONCLUSIONS : The analysis results of the dielectric constants of the concrete bridge deck obtained from the 3D GPR system are consistent with the actual chloride content results. Furthermore, additional verification of this method through field surveys on bridge sections with severe deterioration is highly recommended for future improvements.

PURPOSES : In this study, the results of an intensive field survey of a composite pavement applied to an expressway in Korea are analyzed. The results are intended to be used as basic data for evaluating the composite pavement and for preparing quality control measures through a review and analysis of the change in the state of the tensile bonding strength of the composite pavement. METHODS : To evaluate, repeated field coring and indoor tensile bonding strength evaluations are conducted for five years, and the commonality evaluation of pavement using pavement condition investigation equipment is conducted annually. RESULTS : The results of this study show that the degree of reflective crack generation varies depending on the type of concrete pavement and type of asphalt mixture applied to the intermediate layer, and that the CRCP composite pavement exhibits better initial commonality than the JCP composite pavement. In addition, it is confirmed that the composite cross-section pavement section with MASTIC applied as an intermediate layer shows excellent adhesion performance between the lower concrete layers from the beginning of construction in all sections, as well as satisfied the quality control standards for good pavement and tensile adhesion even after approximately five years of public use. CONCLUSIONS : Based on a follow-up survey of the composite pavement testing sections, it is confirmed that the section constructed with the MASTIC intermediate layer and CRCP satisfies the quality control standards for good pavement conditions and tensile adhesion even after approximately five years of public use.

PURPOSES : The exposed aggregate concrete pavement (EACP) is adopted to achieve low traffic noise and long-term skid resistance in European countries such as Belgium and Germany. In Korea, it is first introduced at the Myeon Cheon field site in 2010. It reduces 3 dB(A) from tire–pavement noise compared with transverse tining. Recent investigations show that EACP can reduce tire–pavement noise by an additional 5 dB(A) compared with transverse tining. In this study, the tire–pavement interaction noise of EACP is compared with that of conventional pavements such as asphalt pavement, next-generation concrete surfaces (NGCS), and transverse tining. METHODS : EACP is constructed at two field sites on the SOC research center and Yeo-Ju test road to compare the noise level via close proximity noise measurement. In addition, the noise is measured using two vehicle type based on vehicle speeds of 60, 80, and 100 km/h. RESULTS : The results of noise measurement obtained from the SOC research center are as follows: Porous asphalt pavement 92.8 dB(A), HMA 96. dB(A), transverse tining 100.1 dB(A), and 8 mm EACP 97 dB(A) at a driving speed of 80 km/h. For the case of the Yeo-Ju test road. The noise levels at a driving speed of 80 km/h are as follows: 6 mm EACP, 93.6 dB(A); asphalt grooving pavement, 94.72 dB(A); 8 mm EACP, 95.2 dB(A); NGCS, 95.2 dB(A); transverse tining, 104.1 dB(A). CONCLUSIONS : The result of noise measurement of two sites in the SOC research center and test road shows that the noise level of the 6 mm EAC is lower than that of concrete pavement, such as tining and NGCS, and similar to that of asphalt pavement. In addition, the noise level of the 8 mm EAC is similar to that of the NGCS pavement. The noise reduction effect of the EAC is greater when small-sized coarse aggregates with lower flat and elongation ratios are used.

of actual and suspicious black-ice cases that occurred during the last 10 years in the Republic of Korea. METHODS : Based on literature review, meteorological observation data associated with black-ice formation are selected: wind speed, air temperature (T), dew point temperature (Td), and relative humidity, to set minimum or maximum threshold values based on the normal distribution of each variable. In addition, weights are assigned based on the relationship among the variables to calculate the probability of occurrence. RESULTS : The threshold values are calculated using the average and standard deviation, resulting in 7.65 °C, 56.63%, 2.99 ms-1 for T-Td, relative humidity, and wind speed, respectively. Whereas the threshold value of T-Td and wind speed is set to the maximum threshold, that of the relative humidity is set to the minimum threshold value. These threshold values are applied to the diagnosis algorithm of black-ice formation, including a 1-h accumulated precipitation. CONCLUSIONS : The algorithm is expected to be utilized as a research methodology for diagnosing suspected cases of black ice.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of applying properties of asphalt binder other than absolute viscosity (AV) to evaluate the rejuvenation level of the binder from reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in recycled asphalt mixtures (RAMs). METHODS : The G*/sin and critical temperature (CT) for determining high performance grade by DSR, and the large molecular size (LMS) using gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) were measured simultaneously with the AV of two virgin asphalt binders (58–22 for RAM and 64–22 for normal mix) and recovered binders from a RAP and four RAMs. Based on mix design, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% recycled RAMs were prepared, and the deformation strength (SD) of the RAMs were measured. The AV, LMS, G*/sin , and CT were measured from the recovered binders from each RAM of the SD-tested specimens. Regression analyses were performed between the LMS and AV, G*/ sin and AV, and CT and AV to determine the correlation of each property with the AV. The feasibility of evaluating the rejuvenation level of the RMA binder using the three properties (LMS, G*/sin , and CT) was evaluated. Regression analysis was performed between SD and AV, and the feasibility of using SD instead of AV ≤ 5,000 poise (p) was analyzed to evaluate the rejuvenation level of the RAM. RESULTS : The AV, LMS, G*/sin , and CT of RAM binders increased with the recycling ratio. Mixes with recycle ratios of 20% and 30% satisfied the AV ≤ 5,000 p criterion, unlike mixes with higher recycle ratios. The regression analysis results showed that the R2 values between the LMS and AV, G*/sin and AV, and CT and AV exceeded 0.96. Since these regressions showed extremely high R2 values, it can be inferred that the estimation of binder rejuvenation level using the LMS, G*/sin and CT, i.e., instead of the AV criterion, is applicable. Because SD exhibits high correlation with the binder stiffness, and the regression between SD and AV indicated R2 > 0.98, SD can be applied instead of the AV for binder rejuvenation level estimation. The main advantage of using the LMS and SD is to estimate the binder rejuvenation level without recovering the binder from the mix. CONCLUSIONS : For the binder rejuvenation level estimation of recycled mixes, it is concluded that the LMS by GPC and G*/sin and CT by DSR, and SD can be applied instead of the AV criterion. However, since this study was performed using limited materials, further studies involving many other materials may be performed to generalize the current conclusion.

PURPOSES : Road surface conditions are vital to traffic safety, management, and operation. To ensure traffic operation and safety during periods of snow and ice during the winter, each local government allocates considerable resources for monitoring that rely on field-oriented manual work. Therefore, a smart monitoring and management system for autonomous snow removal that can rapidly respond to unexpected abrupt heavy snow and black ice in winter must be developed. This study addresses a smart technology for automatically monitoring and detecting road surface conditions in an experimental environment using convolutional neural networks based on a CCTV camera and infrared (IR) sensor data. METHODS : The proposed approach comprises three steps: obtaining CCTV videos and IR sensor data, processing the dataset acquired to apply deep learning based on convolutional neural networks, and training the learning model and validating it. The first step involves a large dataset comprising 12,626 images extracted from the acquired CCTV videos and the synchronized surface temperature data from the IR sensor. In the second step, image frames are extracted from the videos, and only foreground target images are extracted during preprocessing. Hence, only the area (each image measuring 500 × 500) of the asphalt road surface corresponding to the road surface is applied to construct an ideal dataset. In addition, the IR thermometer sensor data stored in the logger are used to calculate the road surface temperatures corresponding to the image acquisition time. The images are classified into three categories, i.e., normal, snow, and black-ice, to construct a training dataset. Under normal conditions, the images include dry and wet road conditions. In the final step, the learning process is conducted using the acquired dataset for deep learning and verification. The dataset contains 10,100 (80%) data points for deep learning and 2,526 (20%) points for verification. RESULTS : To evaluate the proposed approach, the loss, accuracy, and confusion matrix of the addressed model are calculated. The model loss refers to the loss caused by the estimated error of the model, where 0.0479 and 0.0401 are indicated in the learning and verification stages, respectively. Meanwhile, the accuracies are 97.82% and 98.00%, respectively. Based on various tests that involve adjusting the learning parameters, an optimized model is derived by generalizing the characteristics of the input image, and errors such as overfitting are resolved. This experiment shows that this approach can be used for snow and black-ice detections on roads. CONCLUSIONS : The approach introduced herein is feasible in road environments, such as actual tunnel entrances. It does not necessitate expensive imported equipment, as general CCTV cameras can be applied to general roads, and low-cost IR temperature sensors can be used to provide efficiency and high accuracy in road sections such as national roads and highways. It is envisaged that the developed system will be applied to in situ conditions on roads.

PURPOSES : This aim of this study is to develop a model for predicting road surface temperature using an LSTM network to predict road surface temperature associated with road icing. METHODS : A long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network suitable for time-series data with time correlation is used in the analysis. Moreover, an optimal neural network architecture is designed via hyperparameter search and verification using learning and validation data. Finally, the generalization performance is evaluated based on the RMSE using unseen data as test data. RESULTS : The results show that the predicted data are similar to the actual road surface temperature patterns , and that the network appears to be generalized. CONCLUSIONS : The LSTM model improves the accuracy and generalization of road surface temperature prediction, as compared with other machine learning models.

PURPOSES : Steel deck bridges are the preferred structural type for reducing dead load, and the use of thin-layer asphalt concrete with excellent adhesion to the steel deck and excellent deformation followability is increasing for bridge pavements. However, because these materials are constructed at a high temperature of 240 °C or higher to maintain high fluidity during construction, excessive thermal deformation and stress may be temporarily induced in the steel deck. Therefore, the stability of the structure must be assessed by considering the environmental conditions of the site during pavement construction. Herein, a method is presented for estimating the heat source equation, in which conduction and convection effects are removed using temperature measurement data, for modeling U-rib using plate elements. The validity of the study is assessed by deriving the equivalent heat source equation using the temperature data measured from the underside of the steel deck while constructing a 40-mm-thick goose asphalt concrete pavement layer on a 12-mm-thick steel deck. In addition, the practicality is verified by performing heat transfer and thermal stress analyses. METHODS : By comparing the temperature data measured during the construction of high-fluidity asphalt concrete with the results of repeated heat transfer numerical analysis, heat source data without field conduction and convection conditions are obtained. Subsequently, a heat source equation suitable for the heat source data is derived using the least-squares method. RESULTS : The results of the heat transfer analysis using the equivalent heat source equation calculated using the presented method are almost consistent with the measured temperature data. In addition, the behavioral characteristics of the structure that matches the behavior of the actual structure can be derived through thermal stress analysis, which considers heat conduction and convection to adjacent members. CONCLUSIONS : Even when the steel deck and U-rib member are modeled as plate elements, thermal effect analysis can be performed reasonably while considering field conditions.
