PURPOSES : Road surface conditions are vital to traffic safety, management, and operation. To ensure traffic operation and safety during periods of snow and ice during the winter, each local government allocates considerable resources for monitoring that rely on field-oriented manual work. Therefore, a smart monitoring and management system for autonomous snow removal that can rapidly respond to unexpected abrupt heavy snow and black ice in winter must be developed. This study addresses a smart technology for automatically monitoring and detecting road surface conditions in an experimental environment using convolutional neural networks based on a CCTV camera and infrared (IR) sensor data. METHODS : The proposed approach comprises three steps: obtaining CCTV videos and IR sensor data, processing the dataset acquired to apply deep learning based on convolutional neural networks, and training the learning model and validating it. The first step involves a large dataset comprising 12,626 images extracted from the acquired CCTV videos and the synchronized surface temperature data from the IR sensor. In the second step, image frames are extracted from the videos, and only foreground target images are extracted during preprocessing. Hence, only the area (each image measuring 500 × 500) of the asphalt road surface corresponding to the road surface is applied to construct an ideal dataset. In addition, the IR thermometer sensor data stored in the logger are used to calculate the road surface temperatures corresponding to the image acquisition time. The images are classified into three categories, i.e., normal, snow, and black-ice, to construct a training dataset. Under normal conditions, the images include dry and wet road conditions. In the final step, the learning process is conducted using the acquired dataset for deep learning and verification. The dataset contains 10,100 (80%) data points for deep learning and 2,526 (20%) points for verification. RESULTS : To evaluate the proposed approach, the loss, accuracy, and confusion matrix of the addressed model are calculated. The model loss refers to the loss caused by the estimated error of the model, where 0.0479 and 0.0401 are indicated in the learning and verification stages, respectively. Meanwhile, the accuracies are 97.82% and 98.00%, respectively. Based on various tests that involve adjusting the learning parameters, an optimized model is derived by generalizing the characteristics of the input image, and errors such as overfitting are resolved. This experiment shows that this approach can be used for snow and black-ice detections on roads. CONCLUSIONS : The approach introduced herein is feasible in road environments, such as actual tunnel entrances. It does not necessitate expensive imported equipment, as general CCTV cameras can be applied to general roads, and low-cost IR temperature sensors can be used to provide efficiency and high accuracy in road sections such as national roads and highways. It is envisaged that the developed system will be applied to in situ conditions on roads.
This study was carried out to suggest a realtime evaluation system for the odor adsorption efficiency with electrochemical sensors. As the results of the experiments for the realtime evaluation system, the correlation coefficient between the sensor signals and the hydrogen sulfide concentration was relatively good, 0.9920 and 0.8340, respectively. The relative standard deviation of three replicative experiments for the adsorption amount in the conditions of 0.5 g and 1.0 g of adsorbent was 6.97% and 3.49%, respectively. This study would contribute the realtime evaluation of odor control efficiency to overcome the limitations of olfactory method and instrumental analysis in terms of cost and technology.
Toluene, xylene, styrene, and ethylbenzene are main volatile organic compounds emitted from painting materials. According with the development of gas chromatography equipment, it has been possible to analyze the low level of ambient VOCs concentration. In this study, the limit of detection and the limit of quantitation were analysed for VOCs originated from painting materials in GC/FID/liquid injection analysis system. The results of %RSD for four standard solutes showed a great reproducibility in terms of detection time and detection area. The limit of detection and the limit of quantitation in SRI GC appeared to be 501.64 pg and 1.67 ppb for toluene, 572.03 pg and 1.90 ppb for ethylbenzene, 1077.22 pg and 3.59 ppb for m,p-xylene, 36563.35 pg and 121.76 ppb for styrene, respectively.
This study aimed at providing fundamental data to take health care plan in the aspect of Oriental medicine by evaluating the lifestyle and yangseng(養生) levels by job-type of industrial workers. General characteristics, lifestyle, and yangseng levels were investigated through self-administration questionnaire in the course of Oriental health examination for 1,190 male workers at a manufacturing company located in the Chungcheongnam-do region, and the following results were obtained. The total mean of yangseng levels was 96.73 and the evaluation mark was 3.12. The highest mark was shown in the morality yasngseng, while the lowest mark in the activity and rest yangseng. In general, the higher were age and income level, the higher were yangseng levels, and yangseng levels were found to be high in non-smokers and those who have regularly exercised. For yangseng levels by job-type, total yangseng levels were found to be high in office workers, engineer workers, and manufacturing workers in order. For detailed categories of job-type including diet yangseng, activity and rest yangseng, sleeping yangseng, seasonal yangseng, and sexual life yasngseng, yangseng levels were generally found to be high in office workers but low in manufacturing workers. In this study, difference in yangseng levels could be found by job-type of industrial workers, and lifestyle and general characteristics were found to influence yangseng levels. Therefore it is deemed that close studies on health care by job-type are required for health promotion and care of industrial workers in the future.
This study was carried out to analyze any possible changes in the heart rate variability(HRV) of white-collar workers of a manufacturing firm based in Chollabuk-do Province when they are stressed due to their daily job performance and thereby to help them seek a more effective method of the management of their health and help them form more desirable habits of living by finding out how seriously his or her stresses from his or her job performance affect their quality of life(QOL). As a process of the above-mentioned manufacturer's plan to do an Oriental health examination on its white-collar workers, each of the workers of the firm was given a copy of questionaires. The questionaires carried questions regarding each of the workers' general characteristics, clinical history, health-related lifestyle and the QOL and each of the workers was asked to provide his answers to the questions listed on the questionaire. The examination progressed to measure any possible changes in the HRV of an individual worker. Among all of the questionaires filled out and collected from the workers, a total of 423 data were used as the data of the research except those that had answers which were not appropriate for the purpose of the research. The analysis of each of the workers' health related quality of life(HRQOL) showed that the younger, the lower the standard of education is, each of the subjects was found to tend to show a relatively higher QOL if only he is healthy. With regard to the worker's habits of living, those who exercise on a regular basis and who get a good sleep were also found to have a comparatively higher QOL With reference to the HRV, young workers, those who have spouses, those with a high level of academic background, those with a short work experience were found to tend to have a relatively higher HRV. As regards each worker's habits of living, those who do exercise on a regular basis were found to have a comparatively higher index of HRV. RMSSD was found to have an impact on workers' general health, on the other hand TP was found to have an impact on workers' role of emotion. This result was based on findings through analyzing interrelation between HRV and QOL that stresses have an impact on the QOL. Taking a look at the above results, it was learned that individual worker's efforts to promote his or her health, along with establish desirable habits of living, these two qualities are important methods to improve the quality of life. In addition, control of stresses is necessary to improve the QOL, which is possible through emotional stabilization.
