Modular construction is an economical and efficient construction that reduces time and costs by manufacturing units in factories and constructing them on site. Currently, the demand for modular construction is increasing not only abroad but also domestically. As the demand for modular construction increases, a lot of development and research on connections between modular units are being conducted. Connections between modular units should be quick and simple to assemble when assembling units on site, and should be in a form that allows each unit to be connected regardless of direction. In addition, it must be able to exert sufficient strength against external loads. In this study, a connection between modular units using connecting steel plates and bolts was proposed, and the nonlinear behavior of the connection to external lateral force was analyzed through finite element analysis, and resistance performance was evaluated.
In this paper, based on the finite element analysis model verified in previous studies, a new model of a buckling restrained brace reinforced with a steel plate was proposed. A design formula was proposed for the new model to dissipate energy without buckling the steel core under load protocol, and the performance of the model satisfying the design formula was evaluated by comparing it with the previous model through the results of hysteresis loop, bi-linear curve, cumulative energy dissipation capacity, and equivalent viscous damping.
In this paper, nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted based on the experimental results on buckling restrained brace. The reliability of the analytical model was verified by comparing the results of experimental studies with hysteresis loop, bi-linear curve, cumulative energy dissipation capacity, and equivalent viscous damping. A valid finite element model has been secured and will be used as basic data for finite element analysis of buckling restrained braces in the future.
The purpose of this paper is to improve the inappropriate analysis results when the end of the brace on braced frame is applied as pinned connection in practice. The stiffness of the gusset plate connection on the braced frame has the amount of between pinned and rigid connection, and the analysis model that applies the stiffness of the connection must be used for accurate performance evaluation. In this study, the stiffness of the gusset plate designed by the balanced design procedure are quantified, and applied to the analysis model to simulate the gusset plate connection. The proposed model was verified through nonlinear static analysis (pushover analysis) of SAP2000. The effect of the connection on the seismic performance of the braced frame was analyzed by comparing the proposed model and pinned model. As a result, it was confirmed that the performance of the braced frame was evaluated conservatively in practice, and the ductility was overestimated. Therefore, it is important to consider the connection for accurate and economical performance evaluation.
The purpose of the paper is to introduce a system that reduces the occurrence of weak-story in the event of earthquake. Weak-story concentrates deformation on the story and causes all member to collapse before the capacity of all member is reached. This paper introduces Strong-Back system (SB) to protect weak story. SB is a hybrid of zipper frame, tied eccentrically braced frame, and elastic truss system and it is divided into elastic and inelastic areas. Elastic areas prevent the generation of weak story by distributing energy, and inelastic areas dissipate energy through buckling or yielding. In this paper, the seismic performance is evaluated by comparing the four type braced frame with SB through push-over analysis. The four criteria are compared from the base shear, the ductility capacity, the column failure order, and the quantity of brace. As a result, SB proved to have sufficient performance to protect the weak-story.
The purpose of this study was to analyze some parameters’ effects on buckling behavior of Sinusoidal Corrugated Web using finite element analysis program. Studying buckling behavior is one of the most important things to design sinusoidal corrugated web girders and predict the shear performance. In this paper, Four parameters of Sinusoidal Corrugated Web, which are thickness( ), height( ), wave height( ) and wave length( ), were selected for buckling behavior analysis. Via buckling analysis, it is shown that , and have influence on shear buckling stress, Initial stiffness and reduced strength after buckling.
In this study, Fe-Cu-C alloy is sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The sintering conditions are 60 MPa pressure with heating rates of 30, 60 and 9oC/min to determine the influence of heating rate on the mechanical and microstructure properties of the sintered alloys. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the sintered Fe-Cu-C alloy is investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The temperature of shrinkage displacement is changed at 450oC with heating rates 30, 60, and 90oC/min. The temperature of the shrinkage displacement is finished at 650oC when heating rate 30oC/min, at 700oC when heating rate 60oC/min and at 800oC when heating rate 90oC/min. For the sintered alloy at heating rates of 30, 60, and 90oC/min, the apparent porosity is calculated to be 3.7%, 5.2%, and 7.7%, respectively. The hardness of the sintered alloys is investigated using Rockwell hardness measurements. The objective of this study is to investigate the densification behavior, porosity, and mechanical properties of the sintered Fe-Cu-C alloys depending on the heating rate.
