Having conducted numerous research and survey projects, Korea National Arboretum (KNA) has been a centre for Korean insect diversity researches in South Korea for about a decade since its first step as the first national biological collection was taken in 2003. Those projects mainly focused on specimen collection through various surveys and classical taxonomic studies on rather limited taxa. Holding slightly more than 6,000 species in our collection now, we consider it is time to take another approach that will keep insect researches going and expanding its boundary although it seems a little bit late to follow an international trend. The approach we are about to follow is a DNA barcode blitz, which aims for rapid digitization and sequencing of insects. With an integrated system of insect taxonomy we may provide faster and more reliable identification service to the public and other related biological and ecological studies. Digitized morphological and molecular data can be used in various ways such as forest insect pest monitoring, climate change related monitoring, and reverse taxonomic study.

Tenthredinidae comprises 215 species of 64 genera in seven subfamilies and 15 species of Dolerus have been recorded in Korea but there are no studies on the biological information of the genus and related plants. The field horsetail, Equisetum arvense L. is a vascular plant that reproduces by spores rather than seeds. Equisteum arvense develops extensive underground rhizomes which are resistant to herbicides so that, one established, it is extremely difficult and expensive to control. As results of the present study, E. arvense is recorded as a host plant of D. gessneri labiosus in South Korea for the first time. We provide diagnostic characteristics of D. gessneri labiosus with a discussion on a possibility of using D. gessneri as a biocontrol agent againt for E. arvense.

A diversification of external morphology and genital characteristics among conspecific animal populations that are geographically divided is particularly important to study the context of evolution and it is regarded as the early stage of allopatric speciation. The aim of the present study is to understand the morphological variations of Callipogon relictus Semenov from the three different populations (South Korea, China, Russia) in the Eastern Palaearctic region. A morphometric analysis was performed based on 87 selected external and internal characteristics from 95 specimens. As results of the present study, South Korean specimens shows remarkable morphological differences in genital characteristics compare to Russian ones. In Principal Component Analysis (PCA), South Korean and Russian populations are divided into two groups and the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) analysis indicate that these two populations have significant differences in 14 morphometric characteristics.

Rhyparini is one of the tribes of well-known termitophilous scarabs included in Aphodiinae Leach, 1815. Several species of the tribe are known to live in association with termites, with both organisms occurring together in relatively large numbers. In extant numbers of this tribe, the larvae live inside termite nests. The tribe Rhyparini can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: clypeus usually bidentate though sometime feebly so, inflexed edge medially obtusely angulate; frons and vertex with tufts of setae or longitudinal tubercles; pronotum with six longitudinal costae equally spaced in at least posterior half of disc, lateral pronotal edge at least feebly bilobed in anterior half; elytra costae, costae varying on height, number and spacing, elytral apices frequently bulbous, epipleura narrow; posterior prosternal process hastate; antenna 9th segmented, club 3th segmented, segments of club short and compact. The tribe includes 77 species of 12 genera worldwide, and Pittino (2006) published a key to world genera in the subfamily Rhyparinae (tribe Rhyparini). In total, nine species of two genera in the tribe Rhyparini have been recorded in the Palaearctic region up to date: Rhyparus Westwood with eight species and Sybacodes Fairmaire one species, In Japan three species are known, China with one and Taiwan five. However, up to date, any has not been reported in Korea. In the present study we report on the tribe Rhyparini from Korea for the first time, based on Rhyparus azumaiazumai Nakane, 1956. Diagnosis and illustrations of detailed diagnostic characters, including male genitalia are provided.

Pogonini Laporte, 1834 is one of the tribes in Trechinae Bonelli, 1810 (Coleoptera: Carabidae). This tribe is morphologically similar to Trechini, Benbidiini, Zolini and Patrobini of the subfamily. However, Pogonini can be distinguished from the other tribes by having a combination of the following characters: apical maxillary palpomere fusiform; umbilical series of setae on elytron more or less contiguous (though sparse in middle); each tarsomeres with a median sulcus on dorsal side. Pogonini includes about 85 species of 12 genera worldwide and is found in all zoogeographical regions of the world. Many species inhabit along the sea coasts or near salt lakes, and are recognized as halobiont. In Korea, Paik (1998) reported Pogonus (Pogonus) itoshimaensis Habu, 1954. However, he added only the species name in the checklist without description or illustration although few specimens were examined. After Paik’s study, any studies on taxonomic status and distribution of Korean Pogonini have not been carried out. The genus Pogonus Dejean is the largest group in Pogonini with two subgenera: P. (Pogonoidius Carret, 1903) and P. (Pogonus Dejean, 1821). These two subgenera share very similar external morphological characters; Pogonoidius has setae on anterior angles of pronotum and setae at 7th interval of elytra while Pogonus does not have them. In the present study, two species, Pogonus (Pogonus) japonicus Putzeys, 1875 and P. (Pogonoidius) punctulatus Dejean, 1828, are newly recognized from Korea. A key to the Korean Pogonini species, redescription, distribution, photos of diagnostic characters, and illustrations of male and female genitalia are provided.

Anoplophora isa moderate-sized genus with 36 species of woodboring cerambycid beetles that occur throughout Asia, with the highest diversity in the tropical and subtropical region. Two species, A. chinensis (Forster) and A. glabripennis (Motchulsky) are known in the Korean peninsula. The latter is an infamous invasive species, commonly called the Asian longhorned beetle, in the U.S. causing economic damage on hard woods. For the present study, we carried out field surveys from 2010 to 2013 and literature review on the host plants of Korean Anoplophora species. A. chinensis is associated with 14 host plant species in 4 families and A. glabripennis 17 species of 11 families. Most importantly, the Manchurian striped maple, Acer tegmentosum Maxim. (Aceraceae), is newly recognized as a host of the Asian longhorned beetle. In the present study, a revised host plant checklist of Korean Anoplophora species is provided, with correction of scientific and Korean names of the host plants.

The Cerambycidae is a very diverse family in Chrysomeloidea (Insecta: Coleoptera), and the members are commonly called as longhorn beetles, long-horned beetles or longicorn beetles. The family is comprised of approximately 25,000 described species in nine subfamilies worldwide, and 311 species are known from Korean insect fauna. Most species are associated with woods and shrubs or live on herbaceous vegetation in open areas. Cerambycid larvae are primarily borers in deadwood. Some species develop in living trees and cause damage on host plants by boring heart wood and making galleries. As the results of four year field surveys (from 2010 to 2013) and literature review, host plants of 181 species of Korean Cerambycidae are revised, including thirteen new cerambycid-host associations, and more than 179 host plants species of 107 genera in 44 families are compiled. Among them, most common host plants are belonged to mainly four families: Ulmaceae, Pinaceae, Fagaceae and Betulaceae. Additionally, Acer tegmentosum Maxim. (Aceraceae) is newly recognized as a host plant of the Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora grabripennis (Motchulsky) in South Korea.

fossil species. It consists of four genera, Caenosclerogibba Yasumatsu, Probethylus Ashmead, Sclerogibba Riggio & De Stefani-Perez and Pterosclerogibba Olmi. Thirteen species of two genera (60% of species worldwide) are known from the Oriental region. However, no species was reported in Cambodia so far. Even though the detailed biology of the sclerogibbids is poorly known, they are ectoparasitoids of the webspinners (Embiidina). From the present study, three species of the family are recognized for the first time from Cambodia: Sclerogibba talpiformis Benoit, S. rapax Olmi and S. impressa Olmi. Diagnoses and photographs for each species are presented.

Two families of checkered beetles (Cleridae and Thanerocleridae) contain approximately 3,600 described species. Clerus is one of genera belonging to the Omadius genus-group (Cleridae: Clerinae: Clerus series), and distributed in Palaearctic, Indo-Australian and Afrotropic regions containing 17 species. Among the known species, 11 species have been recorded from Palaearctic region (seven from East Asian countries). Through a taxonomic study on the Korean Clerus species, a total of three species, C. dealbatus (Kraatz, 1879), C. pilosellus (Gorham, 1878) and Clerus sp. nov. are recognized. From the present study, it was confirmed that C. dealbatus was misidentified as Thanasimus lewisi (Jacobson, 1911) in the country, due to the similarity of the body coloration. The presence of the latter species in Korean insect fauna is very doubtful. Diagnostic characters of three Korean Clerus species are presented.
