Porous carbons are considered promising for CO2 capture due to their high-pressure capture performance, high chemical/ thermal stability, and low humidity sensitivity. But, their low-pressure capture performance, selectivity toward CO2 over N2, and adsorption kinetics need further improvement for practical applications. Herein, we report a novel dual-templating strategy based on molten salts (LiBr/KBr) and hydrogen-bonded triazine molecules (melamine–cyanuric acid complex, MCA) to prepare high-performance porous carbon adsorbents for low-pressure CO2. The comprehensive investigations of pore structure, microstructure, and chemical structure, as well as their correlation with CO2 capture performance, reveal that the dual template plays the role of porogen for multi-hierarchical porous structure based on supermicro-/micro-/meso-/ macro-pores and reactant for high N/O insertion into the carbon framework. Furthermore, they exert a synergistic but independent effect on the carbonization procedure of glucose, avoiding the counter-balance between porous structure and hetero-atom insertion. This enables the preferred formation of pyrrolic N/carboxylic acid functional groups and supermicropores of ~ 0.8 nm, while retaining the micro-/meso-/macro-pores (> 1 nm) more than 60% of the total pore volume. As a result, the dual-templated porous carbon adsorbent (MG-Br-600) simultaneously achieves a high CO2 capture capacity of 3.95 mmol g− 1 at 850 Torr and 0 °C, a CO2/ N2 (15:85) selectivity factor of 31 at 0 °C, and a high intra-particle diffusivity of 0.23 mmol g− 1 min− 0.5 without performance degradation over repeated use. With the molecular scale structure tunability and the large-scale production capability, the dual-templating strategy will offer versatile tools for designing high-performance carbon-based adsorbents for CO2 capture.

Biomass-derived porous carbon is an excellent scientific and technologically interesting material for supercapacitor applications. In this study, we developed biomass-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanosheets (BDPCNS) from cedar cone biomass using a simple KOH activation and pyrolysis method. The BDPCNS was effectively modified at different temperatures of 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 ℃ under similar conditions. The as-prepared BDPCNS-700 electrode exhibited a high BET surface area of 2883 m2 g− 1 and a total pore volume of 1.26 cm3 g− 1. Additionally, BDPCNS-700 had the highest electrical conductivity (11.03 cm− 1) and highest N-doped content among the different electrode materials. The BDPCNS-700 electrode attained a specific capacitance of 290 F g− 1 at a current density of 1 A g− 1 in a 3 M KOH electrolyte and an excellent longterm electrochemical cycling stability of 93.4% over 1000 cycles. Moreover, the BDPCNS-700 electrode had an excellent energy density (40.27 Wh kg− 1) vs power density (208.19 W kg− 1). These findings indicate that BDPCNS with large surface areas are promising electrode materials for supercapacitors and energy storage systems.

Graphene-derived materials are an excellent electrode for electrochemical detection of heavy metals. In this study, a MnO2/ graphene supported on Ni foam electrode was prepared via ultrasonic impregnation and electrochemical deposition. The resulting electrode was used to detect Pb(II) in the aquatic environment. The graphene and MnO2 deposited on the Ni foam not only improved active surface area, but also promoted the electron transfer. The electrochemical performance towards Pb(II) was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The prepared electrode exhibited lower limit of detection (LOD, 0.2 μM (S/N = 3)) and good sensitivity (59.9 μAμM−1) for Pb(II) detection. Moreover, the prepared electrodes showed good stability and reproducibility. This excellent performance can be attributed to the strong adhesion force between graphene and MnO2, which provides compact structures for the enhancement of the mechanical stability. Thus, these combined results provide some technical considerations and scientific insights for the detection of heavy metal ions using composite electrodes.

Metals such as stainless steel and alloy 600 are used as structures and materials in nuclear power plants due to their excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance. And recently thermal and mechanical cutting technologies are being actively researched and developed for dismantling NPP. Among them, the mechanical cutting method has the advantage of less secondary waste generation such as fume and fine dust, but according to the wider the cutting range, the reaction force and the cutting device size are increased. In this paper, plasma assisted milling has been proposed to reduce the reaction force and device size, and the plasma efficiency was measured for SUS 316L. The plasma torch was operated at the level of 3 to 4 kW so that it was heated only without cutting. And the feedrate was set at 150 to 250 mm/min. The test confirmed that the plasma efficiency was 35% about SUS 316L, and it is expected that the numerical analysis using these test results can be used as basic data for plasma assisted milling.

Aluminum’s exceptional properties, such as its high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and low neutron absorption cross-section, make it an ideal material for diverse nuclear industry applications, including aluminum plating for the building envelope of nuclear power plants. However, plating aluminum presents challenges due to its high reactivity with oxygen and moisture, thus, complicating the process in the absence of controlled environments. Plating under an inert atmosphere is often used as an alternative. However, maintaining an inert atmosphere can be expensive and presents an economic challenge. To address these challenges, an innovative approach is introduced by using deep eutectic solvents (DES) as a substitute for traditional aqueous electrolytes due to the high solubility of metal salts, and wide electrochemical window. In addition, DESs offer the benefits of low toxicity, low flammability, and environmentally friendly, which makes DESs candidates for industrial-scale applications. In this study, we employed an AlCl3-Urea DES as the electrolyte and investigated its potential for producing aluminum coatings on copper substrates under controlled conditions, for example, current density, deposition duration, and temperature. A decane protective layer, non-polar molecular, has been used to shield the AlCl3-Urea electrolyte from the air during the electrodeposition process. The electrodeposition was successful after being left in the air for two weeks. This study presents a promising and innovative approach to optimizing aluminum electrodeposition using deep eutectic solvents, with potential applications in various areas of the nuclear industry, including fuel cladding, waste encapsulation, and radiation shielding.

Various cutting technologies such as thermal and mechanical are being researched and developed to dismantle shutdown nuclear power plants. Each technology has the following advantages and disadvantages. The thermal cutting method has low reaction force and fast cutting speed, but secondary waste such as fume, dross, and fine dust is generated. The mechanical cutting method has the advantage of low generation of secondary waste such as fume, dross, and fine dust, but has the disadvantage of increasing the size of the device due to its large reaction force. In this study, the performance of plasma milling robot cutting technology for nuclear power plant materials was evaluated. First, before applying plasma auxiliary milling to the robot, tests were conducted on SUS 316 L and Alloy 600 to secure processing conditions such as plasma torch output and transfer speed. The test have shown that the mechanical strength was decreased of each material at the output power of the plasma torch of 4.4 and 8.4 kW, the transfer speed of 200 and 100 mm/min. Based on the test results, a plasma milling was attached to the robot and tested, and it was confirmed that even a small robot with a load of 140 kg can cut without any major problems.

Radioactive carbon dioxide (14CO2) capture using innovative materials is desirable due to associated radiological hazards, and growing climate change. Mineral carbonation technology (MCT) is amenable to irreversibly capture CO2. Typically, MCT is attractive because capturing carbon through the chemical reaction between alkaline earth metal ions and CO2 forms insoluble and significantly stable carbonates. However, most applications of MCT have an intrinsic restriction regarding their operational conditions since no forward reaction occurs within realistic time scales. Thereby, the CO2 capture performance, such as CO2 capacity and carbonation reaction rate, of MCTs and their applications are severely restricted by the difficulty of operations under mild conditions. For example, natural minerals require aggressive carbonation reaction conditions e.g. high pressure (≥ 20 bar), high temperature (> 373 K), and pH-adjusted carrier solutions. To overcome such obstacles, the fabrication of alkaline earth oxides impregnated into an amorphous glass structure have been recently developed. They show enhanced rates of dissolution of alkaline earth metal ions and carbonation reaction due to the loosely packed glass structure and the generation of a surface coating silica gel, consequently facilitating CO2 capture under mild conditions. In this presentation, we report the synthesis and application of a crystallized glass tailored by controlled heat treatment for CO2 capture under mild conditions. The controlled heat treatment of an alkaline earth oxide-containing glass gives rise to a structural transformation from amorphous to crystalline. The structural characterizations and CO2 capture performance, including CO2 capacity, carbonation reaction rate, and the dissolution rate of alkaline earth metal ion, were analyzed to reveal the impact of controlled heat treatment and phase transformation.

The removal of aqueous pollutants, including dye molecules from wastewater remains one of the pressing problems in the world. Because of chemical stability and conjugated structure, dye molecules cannot be easy decomposed by heat with oxidizing reagents such as H2O2 and light. The most common representative of widespread organic pollutant is methylene blue (MB) with molecular formula C16H18ClN3S, which is important colorant and used in various chemical and biological production industries and causes serious environment problems. Porous materials, including MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) have been applied for efficient MB photocatalytic degradation. However, one of the main barriers to using most MOFs to break down aromatic organics is wide band gap energy, which means that the catalyst can exhibit high photocatalytic performance only under UVlight irradiation. Moreover, most MOFs usually show the poor water stability of frameworks, which tend to dissolve in water with total destruction. In this work we report about two new copper based MOFs with high photocatalytic properties for efficient MB degradation from wastewater under UV-light and natural sunlight. Time, required for 100% MB degradation, equals 7 minutes under UV (source 4 W 254 nm VL-4.LC UV-lamp) and 60 minutes under natural sunlight irradiation in the presence of H2O2. Crystal structure information is provided using single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The composition and comparative characteristics of MOFs are given using powder X-ray diffraction, UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, UVvisible spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy.

Metakaolin-based geopolymers have shown promise as suitable candidates for 14C immobilization and final disposal. It has been shown that the physicochemical properties of metakaolin wasteforms meet, and often far exceeding, the strict compression strength and leaching acceptance criteria of the South Korea radioactive waste disposal site. However, it is not possible to analyze and characterize the internal structure of the geopolymer wasteform by conventional characterization techniques such as microscopy without destruction of the wasteform; an impractical solution for inspecting wasteforms destined for final disposal. Internal inspection is important for ensuring wastes are homogenously mixed throughout the wasteform and that the wasteform itself does not pose any significant defects that may have formed either during formulation and curing or as a result of testing prior to final disposal. X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) enables Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) of objects, such as final wasteforms, allowing for both their internal and external, characterization without destruction. However, for accurate quantification of an objects dimensions the spatial resolution (length and volume measures) must be know to a high degree of precision and accuracy. This often requires extensive knowledge of the equipment being used, its precise set-up, maintenance and calibration, as well as expert operation to yield the best results. A spatial resolution target consists of manufactured defects of uniformed dimensions and geometries which can be measured to a high degree of accuracy. Implementing the use of a spatial resolution target, the dimensions of which are known and certified independently, would allow for rapid dimensional calibration of XCT systems for the purpose of object metrology. However, for a spatial resolution target to be practical it should be made of the same material as the intended specimen, or at least exhibit comparable X-ray attenuation. In this study, attempts have been made to manufacture spatial resolution targets using geopolymer, silica glass, and alumina rods, as well as 3D printed materials with varying degrees of success. The metakaolin was activated by an alkaline activator KOH to from a geopolymer paste that was moulded into a cylinder (Diameter approx. 25 mm). The solidified geopolymer cylinder as well as both the silica glass rod and alumina rod (Diameter approx. 25 mm) we cut to approximately 4 mm ± 0.5 mm height with additional end caps cut measuring 17.5 mm ± 2.5 mm height. All parts were then polished to a high finish and visually inspected for their suitability as spatial resolution targets.

In this work, we report test results for direct melting of non-combustible wastes by using a 100 kW class transferred type plasma torch. For this purpose, non-combustible wastes consisting of metals and sands were prepared, weighed and melted by a transferred arc in a ceramic crucible with inner diameter of 150 mm. Test results reveal that 75wt% M6 iron bolts mixed with 25wt% sands were completely melted down within 140 seconds at the plasma power level of 83.8 kW, producing melting speed of 100 kg/hr and volume reduction rate of 62.8%. In addition, for simulated wastes consisting of 77.3wt% metal chips and 22.7wt% sands, the volume reduction rate high than 88% was achieved at 50 kW plasma power. These results indicate that non-combustible wastes can be treated efficiently when directly melting them by using transferred type plasma torch.

It is important that the plasma torch used in the waste treatment field has a high output to increase throughput. In order to increase the output of the plasma torch, there is a method of increasing the current or extending the length of the plasma arc. Among these methods, high power can be easily achieved simply by increasing current, but it is difficult to ensure electrode life. Therefore, it is necessary to check the appropriate current and arc length conditions to achieve high power and stable operation. In this paper, the power performance according to the arc length, current, and operation mode was confirmed in the transfer mode plasma torch. The test conditions are the distance (arc length) between the plasma torch and the external electrode was set to 5-180 mm, and the current was set to be in the range of 90-460 A. As a result of the test, it was confirmed that the reverse polarity operation had a maximum output of 159 kW depending on the arc length and current, and the positive polarity operation had a maximum output of 138 kW. Through this result, it was confirmed that the arc length had an effect on increasing the output, and that the reverse polarity operation had a longer arc than the positive polarity operation.

Chemical environments of near-field (Engineered barrier and surrounded host rock) can influence performance of a deep geological repository. The chemical environments of near-field change as time evolves eventually reaching a steady state. During the construction of a deep geological repository, O2 will be introduced to the deep geological repository. The O2 can cause corrosion of Cu canisters, and it is important predicting remaining O2 concentration in the near-field. The remaining O2 concentration in the near field can be governed by the following two reactions: oxidation of Cu(I) from oxidation of Cu and oxidation of pyrite in bentonite and backfill materials. These oxidation reactions (Cu(I) and pyrite oxidation) can influence the performance of the deep geological repository in two ways; the first way is consuming oxidizing agents (O2) and the second way is the changing pH in the near-field and ultimately influencing on the mass transport rate of radionuclides from spent nuclear fuel (failure of canisters) to out of the engineered barrier. Hence, it is very important to know the evolution of chemical environments of near-field by the oxidation of pyrite and Cu. However, the oxidation kinetics of pyrite and Cu are different in the order of 1E7 which means the overall kinetics cannot be fully considered in the deep geological repository. Therefore, it is important to develop a simplified Cu and pyrite oxidation kinetics model based on deep geological repository conditions. Herein, eight oxidation reactions for the chemical species Cu(I) were considered to extract a simplified kinetic equation. Also, a simplified kinetics equation was used for pyrite oxidation. For future analysis, simplified chemical reactions should be combined with a Multiphysics Cu corrosion model to predict the overall lifetime of Cu canisters.

This study aims to develop a multi-functional cage for dogs as a house to reduce their anxiety when they go out using cages. This study investigates the types and characteristics of cages and cage preference by surveying men and women in their 20s who use them. The cage product reviews are also analyzed. The research results are as follows: First, domestic dog cages are classified into crate, shoulder, cross (sling bag), backpack, carrier, and stroller types. The crate type is easy to clean and can be used as a house, but it is bulky and therefore inconvenient to carry when using public transportation. The shoulder type is a fabric material with good air permeability but has the disadvantage of being easily soiled. It can be used as a house and is light weight, making it convenient when using public transportation. Second, as a result of consumer research, respondents prefer the shoulder-type fabric over the crate-type plastic material. Third, from the shoulder-type product review, the shape stability, companion dogs’ psychological safety, the wearability of companions, and management convenience are derived. Fourth, based on the survey results, a multifunctional cage is developed taking into account the companion dog, companion person, and functional factors.
