Two siphonous green algae were collected from the eastern coast of Korea. These species share the typical features of Derbesia sporophytes, such as erect and prostrate siphonous filaments and the presence of basal septum in lateral branches. One is characterized by the combined features of a relatively small tufted sporophytic thalli arising from a rhizoidal base, subdichotomously branched filaments with a basal septum and one pyrenoid per subspherical to lenticular chloroplast. The other shows a larger sporophytic thallus, sparsely subdichotomously branched filaments with a basal septum and one pyrenoid per spherical chloroplast. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequence, the two above-mentioned Korean algae nest in the same clades as Derbesia minima and D. indica, respectively. The genetic distance between the sequences within the clades was 0.5- 0.8%, which is considered to be included in the intra-specific range for the genus. These two siphonous Korean algae are identified as D. minima and D. indica, respectively, based on the morphological and molecular analyses. These species are newly recorded in the Korean marine algal flora herein.

While working on beetles collected by using flight interception trap, we found specimens possessing similar characters with salpingidine genus Lissodema Curtis. After detailed examination of the specimens and comparison with other Lissodema species, we concluded that these specimens represent a new species of the genus. The genus Lissodema was first proposed by Curtis based on Lissodema heyana Curtis and contains 19 species in the Palaearctic region. In eastern Asia, 14 and three species are recorded in Japan and Russian Far East, respectively, but no species have been reported from Korea. In this study, a description, habitus photographs and line drawings of diagnostic characters of a new species from Korea are provided.

A marine algal species belonging to Gigartinales was collected from Geoje, Korea. This shares the generic features of Ahnfeltiopsis, such as multiaxial thalli with a compact and pseudoparenchymatous medulla, densely cytoplasmic secondary medullary cells around immersed cystocarps with a carpostome, and is distinct from similar species within the genus by a combined feature of small (up to 4 cm tall) and tuft thalli, compressed to subcompressed branches except for ultimate branchlets and base of main axes, cartilaginous in texture, dichotomous branches, rarely produced proliferations, absence of hypha-like filament in the medulla and internal cystocarps with a carpostome. In phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequence, the Korean species nests in the same clade with Ahnfeltiopsis linearis. The genetic distance between both sequences within the clade was 1.5%, considered to be within the intra-species range for the genus. This morphological and molecular evidence confirms the Korean alga to be identified as A. linearis originally described from California. This is the first record of A. linearis in Korea.

The continuous exploration in deep seawater from Korea makes us lead the discovery of ancient Chlorophyta, Palmophyllum, in the Korean coast. The phylogenetic analyses of 18S rRNA and rbcL genes demonstrate that our specimens are Palmophyllum crassum (Naccari) Rabenhorst, recorded in Japan and clearly distinguished from P. umbracola from New Zealand and California, USA. Palmophyllum crassum grows in the subtidal region, 8-30 m deep, and has a crustose thallus which is closely adherent to substrates such as non-geniculate crustose coralline algae, sponge, shells, or rocks. P. crassum is composed of numerous spherical cells embedded in the gelatinous matrix. The discovery of this ancient green seaweed implies that the Korean coast is one of the hotspots of algal species diversity and has the suitable marine environment for algal speciation. We suggest the grounds to conserve the Korean coast environmentally as the biodiversity center of marine species by studying the phylogeny of seaweeds.

The former Scelionidae (sensu stricto) is considered to be a part of Platygastridae, recently. During the parasitic wasp collecting with yellow pan trap, aiming at investigating promising biological control agents which attack on plantbug pests for soybean cultivation, one new species and one unrecorded scelionine species were identified. Opisthacantha albertoi sp. n. was collected from central part of korean peninsula. It is very unique by its yellowish body, compared with the black of the most recorded korean scelonine species. It has a long ovipositor which is 1.3 times longer than body length. It was named after the late Dr. S.-B. Ahn, the noctuid specialist. The unrecorded Tiphodytes gerriphagus (Marchal) was famous for its extremely extraordinary habit of diving for Hymenoptera to attack the eggs of gerrid hosts (Gerris, Trepobates spp.). It was collected nationwidely in Korea. As a result, two genera are newly added in korean scelionine fauna and korean Scelioninae is composed of eight species in five genera in total.

This study treated the list and key to the 8 species of the subfamily Typhlodrominae from Korea including a newly recorded species, T. coryli Wu and Lan, 1991. This subfamily comprises four genera: Kuzinellus Wainstein, Paraseiulus Muma, Galendromus Muma, Typhlodromus Scheuten. Key characters of the genera in Typhlodrominae have been well known as the number and position of the dorsal setae. Therefore, Typhlodrominae was previously referred to one genus, Typhlodromus in Korea. However, the nominal species in the Phytoseiidae has increased in number exponentially more than 2,280 in the world today, so the current classification of the family is taken more genera by other characters, not only dorsal chaetotaxy but also the setation and the nature of the posterior margin of the sternal shield, the shape and setation of the ventrianal shield, setation of legs I-IV and the relative lengths of the setae Z4 and Z5. Thus, Korean Typhlodrominae includes four genera, Kuzinellus Wainstein, Paraseiulus Muma, Galendromus Muma and Typhlodromus Scheuten.

Dendrothripine thrips are distinguished from other members of Thripidae by a remarkably elongate, “lyre-shaped” metasternal endofurca. This furca extends to the mesothorax as a pair of sinusoidal curved spurs, providing the insertion points for powerful muscles arising from the hind legs of the salatatorial thrips. The subfamily Dendrothripinae, formerly known for a long time as the tribe Dendrothripini since Priesner (1925), was up-ranked to subfamily level of Thripidae by Bhatti (1989). Of the 97 species in 15 genera known worldwide, Dendrothrips minowai Priesner, 1935 and Pseudodendrothrips mori (Niwa, 1908) have been hitherto reported from Korea. In this study of the Korean Dendrothripinae, two species of genus Dendrothrips, D. ornatus (Jablonowski, 1894) and D. magnoliae Kudo, 1984, are found for the first time. However, D. minowai Priesner recorded by Woo (1974), is excluded from the Korean fauna because of misidentification as supposed by Kudo (1984). Morphological characters for identification of three species including P. mori previously recorded are described and figured with a key to Korean species of Dendrothripinae.

Metcalfa pruinosa (Say) (Hemiptera: Flatidae), the citrus flatid planthopper(CFP) is suddenly discovered this year in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, Korea. CFP is originally distributed in the Eastern parts of North America(Metcalf and Bruner 1948), and recently spreading to European countries(Baker et al. 2008) such as northern Italy, Spain, and France. It is an economically important plant-sucking insect having wide host range including many agricultural crops such as grapefruit and citrus, and ornamental trees, camellias, azaleas, and magnolias(Dean and Bailey 1961) mediating plant viruses. We discovered large samples on Hosta longipes (Franch. & Sav.) Matsumura, Liriope platyphylla F.T.Wang & T.Tang, Weigela subsessilis L.H.Bailey, etc. in Seoul and Suwon on August 2009. In this report, we announce their taxonomic position, morphological characters, distribution, host information, and importance as a possible pest in the Korean peninsula.

Apolygus xanthomelas Yasunaga and Yasunaga 2000 is reported from Korea for the first time. It is larger than other congeneric species from Korea and has characteristic V-shaped pale parts on hemelytra surrounded by entirely black clavus and posterior triangular marks of corium. It is similar in overall appearance to the Chinese congeneric species, A. ornatus (Zheng and Wang 1983), but it can be distinguished by the vesica, which has a long needle-shaped spicule reaching the apex of median sclerite and ventral sclerite, a slender and weak wing-shaped sclerite and a small sublateral sclerite. This species also distributes in Japan, but the Japanese population is a little different from that of Korea in usually having a pair of dark spots on calli. In this study, the detailed information is given with some photos of the male and female genitalia.
