        Imperial Japan’s “comfort women” system was one of the major atrocities against humanity during the Asia-Pacific war (1931-1945), yet denial of this war crime remains steadfast in Japan today. This paper introduces and discusses the personal accounts of Korean and Chinese “comfort women” which hitherto were unavailable to English readers. It demonstrates, through the testimonies of the survivors and eyewitnesses, the close correlation between the proliferation of the military comfort stations and the progression of Japan’s aggressive war. The lived experiences of the “comfort women” reveal undeniably that the “comfort women” system was created for the war and made possible by the war. The survivors’ narratives highlight that in today’s world when sexual violence continues to be used as an instrument of armed conflicts that prevents societies from achieving sustainable peace, the comfort women’s memories constitute a legacy of global significance.

        This research aims to look at and resolve the issue of Japanese military “comfort women,” an issue that sits at the core of the conflict over history in East Asia, from the perspective of politics of denial that inevitably intervenes in the phase of stagnant purging of the past. To this end, first of all, it is necessary to presuppose the recognition that the military “comfort women” issue is not a narrow Korea-Japan relations issue but one related to responsibility for colonial rule and to shared transitional justice in East Asia. Second, based on such presupposition, I introduce some of the debates and arguments within civil society in regard to the historiography of The Comfort Women of the Empire, as an example that shows the dilemma of historical self-reflection in East Asia. Third, I critically review the problems of the historiography of The Comfort Women of the Empire, positioned largely within historical revisionism in East Asia, from the standpoint of Stanley Cohen’s theory on denial. Fourth, I extrapolate theoretical and practical tasks implied by the foregoing discussion, from the perspective of possibility of historical dialogue in East Asia. As a conclusion, this paper seeks to reflect on the fact that the issue of denial, which emerged as a social fact during the process of debating on history in East Asia, raised the need for intellectuals of our time to sincerely self-reflect upon responsibilities of the academia. In other words, there is a need to fundamentally reflect upon the social sphere in which historiography and representations take place―in short, upon the transitive dimension of intellectual activity where historical knowledge competes and communicates.

        In this report, I address some of my observations of and reflections on the issues surrounding Japanese military sexual slavery and its victims, the “comfort women.” First, I seek to focus on the problem inherent in the process of remembering Pong-ki Pae. In 1991, Hak-sun Kim, an elderly woman residing in South Korea, came forward to recount her experience as a “comfort woman,” commonly understood to be the first such public acknowledgement. Even though Mrs. Pae, a resident of Okinawa, had already offered her testimony regarding her own experience as a Japanese military sex slave in 1975, her story was not known in South Korea. Mrs. Pae, a victim of colonialism and war, was effectively silenced, and her experience obfuscated, by the ideological polarity born of the division of the Korean peninsula. Second, I discuss the deeply moving encounter between Pok-tong Kim, another victim of Japanese military sexual slavery, and the students of the Korea University of Japan in Tokyo in 2014. Third, I seek to bring to the fore key discussions of the concept of war-dependent democracy. In the midst of the complete, conspicuous unveiling of the propensity of the Japanese right toward historical revisionism, the decline of the left has been intensely pronounced, rendering post-war democracy in Japan utterly impotent. The present conditions of such historical understanding in Japanese society necessitate an intricate re-examination of the understanding of modern Japanese history that has continued to exist until today; the concept of war-dependent democracy serves as an effort toward achieving such an end.

        While more than seventy years have passed since liberation from Japanese colonial rule, the problems rooted in Japanese wartime aggression, including the issue of “comfort women,” remain unsettled due to the misperceived historical notion on the part of the Japanese government. The existence of the “comfort women” system has been commonly acknowledged as a fact by many and while the Japanese government acknowledged the existence of comfort women and comfort stations in the “Kono Statement,” the current administration of Shinzo Abe is denying Japan’s liability and compensation. First, we must contemplate again the meaning of the comfort women issue and the significance of resolving the issue. At the same time, we must endeavor not to leave imperial Japan’s inhumane activities and crime against humanity in the past and approach the comfort women issue to protect peace and justice and serve it as a warning to Japanese militarism which is currently on the rise. If we continue to fail in solving issues caused by the war, building a correct perception of history and securing peace in the region will be an arduous task. We must urge the Japanese government for a heartfelt apology, repentance and compensation so that the victims can pass away without any resentment.

        To analyze human thermal environments in protected horticultural houses (plastic houses), human thermal sensations estimated using measured microclimatic data (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar and terrestrial radiation) were compared between an outdoor area and two indoor plastic houses, a polyethylene (PE) house and a polycarbonate (PC) house. Measurements were carried out during the daytime in autumn, a transient season that exhibits human thermal environments ranging from neutral to very hot. The mean air temperature and absolute humidity of the houses were 14.6-16.8℃ (max. 22. 3℃) and 7.0-12.0 g∙m-3 higher than those of the outdoor area, respectively. Solar (K) and terrestrial (L) radiation were compared directionally from the sky hemisphere (↓) and the ground hemisphere (↑). The mean K↓ and K↑ values for the houses were respectively 232.5-367.8 W∙m-2 and 44.9-55.7 W∙m-2 lower than those in the outdoor area; the mean L↓ and L↑ values were respectively 150.4-182.3 W∙m-2 and 30.5-33.9 W∙m-2 higher than those in the outdoor area. Thus, L was revealed to be more influential on the greenhouse effect in the houses than K. Consequently, mean radiant temperature in the houses was higher than the outdoor area during the daytime from 10:45 to 14:15. As a result, mean human thermal sensation values in the PMV, PET, and UTCI of the houses were respectively 3.2-3.4℃ (max. 4.7℃), 15.2-16.4℃ (max. 23.7℃) and 13.6-15.4℃ (max. 22.3℃) higher than those in the outdoor area. The heat stress levels that were influenced by human thermal sensation were much higher in the houses (between hot and very hot) than in the outdoor (between neutral and warm). Further, the microclimatic component that most affected the human thermal sensation in the houses was air temperature that was primarily influenced by L↓. Therefore, workers in the plastic houses could experience strong heat stresses, equal to hot or higher, when air temperature rose over 22℃ on clear autumn days.

        This study tried to compare and analyze the thermal comfort index according to GVZ of school green space. For the analysis, this study performed a correlation analysis with weather elements by measuring and calculating UTCI, PMV, and WBGT according to GVZ. GVZ was in the order of Type 3 (5.68 m3/m2) > Type 2 (4.71 m3/m2) > Type 1 (3.37 m3/m2). The average temperature and solar radiation, surface temperature, globe temperature among weather characteristics was in the order of Type 1> Type 2 > Type 3. The UTCI in the school green space was in the order of Type 1 (33.95°C) > Type 2 (33.68°C) > Type 3 (32.73°C). At Type 3 that the GVZ is higher than other Types, it is belongs to range of 26~33°C which gets normal heat stress, and other Types belong to range of 33~38°C which gets strong heat stress. The PMV was in the order of Type 1 > Type 2 > Type 3, and the estimated rate of unsatisfaction was appeared as 100%, so it is uncomfortable even in the school green space that it requires measure on heat wave. The WBGT was in the order of Type 1 > Type 2 > Type 3. The result of the correlation analysis according to the heat comfort index shows that, the higher the green ratio and GVZ are, the UTCI has negative relationship, and PMV and WBGT were analyzed as have no relationship according to green characteristics, but this result was considered as measured at green space when the temperature was at its highest so the uncomfortable feeling was also highest. The result of correlation analysis of green characteristics and the weather elements shows that GVZ and insolation, temperature has negative relationship, so it is considered that the higher the GVZ is, the solar radiation and the temperature are decreased.

        본 연구는 여름철 인체 실험을 통해 온냉감, 쾌적감, 기류감 등을 측정하여 토지피복현황에 따라 인간이 느끼는 온열쾌적감에 대해서 검토하였다. 본 연구의 연구결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 1. 토지피복현황에 따라 기상요소를 분석한 결과 기온의 경우 식재지가 최저온을, 포장지가 최고온을 형성하였다. 최고온역인 포장지와 최저온역인 식재지의 온도 차이는 3.9~4.1℃로 나타났다. 풍속의 경우 나지, 수면, 건폐지의 풍속이 1m/s 이상을 보였고 식재지, 초지, 포장지는 1m/s 이하의 풍속이 관측되었다.2. 풍속에 따른 기류감 및 기류평가에서 풍속이 증가함에 따라 기류감이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 풍속이 0.3m/s일 경우부터, 기류감을 느끼기 시작하고 풍속이 1.5m/s일 경우 거의 모든 피험자가 보통이상으로 느끼며 1.9m/s일 경우 기류가 강하다고 느끼는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 같은 기류일 경우 식재지의 기류가 포장지의 기류보다 더 큰 만족을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 3. 온열 중성점은 25.6℃에서 나타났고 온냉감의 수치로 -0.5~+0.5를 쾌적범위로 할 경우 쾌적범위는 24.7~26.6℃로 나타났다.4. 기상요소와 쾌적감에 미치는 효과의 상관분석결과, 기상요소가 쾌적감에 미치는 효과는 일사량, 풍속, 기온, 습도의 순으로 나타났다. 5. 토지피복현황에 따른 기온과 쾌적감 비교 결과 식재지는 다른 지역에 비해 쾌적감이 현저히 높았으며, 실외의 경우 기상요소인 기온, 일사, 풍속, 습도의 조합에 따라 쾌적감이 달라지기 때문 단순한 기온 및 습도의 조합으로 쾌적감을 나타낼 수 없는 것으로 나타나 이에 대한 추가적인 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.

        해상 상태가 거칠어짐에 따라 선체동요로 인하여 선박에 승선 증인 승객 및 승무원은 멀미 증상을 호소하기도 하고, 졸음 증상, 어지럼증, 두통 및 복통 등을 초래하기도 한다. 심한 경우에는 생리적으로 회복하기 힘들 정도의 심각한 장애를 겪기도 한다. 또한, 의욕(동기부여) 감소, 숙련도 저하, 인지능력 및 판단력 저하 등 정신적 활동의 지연이나 오류를 유발하는 등 활동성 및 작업수행 능력이 현저히 떨어지기도 한다. 본 논문에서는 멀미의 발생 및 작업수행과 관련된 대표적인 국제 표준안을 살펴보았고, 실습선에 승선 중인 실습생들을 대상으로 수차례에 걸쳐 설문조사를 실시하여 승선감을 평가하였다. 그 결과, 멀미 중상을 유발하는 주요소가 상하가속도임을 확인하였고, 그 크기(수준)는 0.2g 이상으로 분석되었다. 또한, 속력 또는 침로를 변경하여 파도와의 만남주기가 4~8초의 범위에서 벗어나도록 항해함으로써 멀미 증상을 완화시킬 수 있는 방안을 제시하였다.

        Thermal neutrality is not enough to achieve thermal comfort. The temperature level can be the optimal, and still people may complain. This situation is often explained by the problem of local discomfort. Local discomfort can be caused by radiant asymmetry, local air velocities, too warm and too cold floor temperature and vertical temperature difference. This temperature difference may generate thermal discomfort due to different thermal sensation in different body parts. Therefore, thermal comfort can not be correctly evaluated without considering these differences. This study investigates thermal discomfort sensations of different body parts and its effect on overall thermal sensation and comfort in air-heating room. Experimental results of evaluating thermal discomfort at different body parts in an air-heating room showed that thermal sensation on the shoulder was significantly related to the overall thermal sensation and discomfort. Although it is known that cool-head, warm-foot condition is good for comfort living, cool temperature around the head generated discomfort

        Draft is defined as an unwanted local cooling of the human body caused by air movement. It is a serious problem in many ventilated or air conditioned buildings. Often draft complaints occur although measured velocities in the occupied zone maybe lower than prescribed in existing standards. Purpose of this study is to clarify the evaluation of thermal comfort based on temperature and air velocity in winter. Experiments were performed in an environmental chamber in winter. Indoor temperature and air velocity was artificially controlled. The experiments were performed to evaluate temperature conditions and air velocity conditions by physiological and psychological responses of human. According to physiological responses and psychological responses, it was clear that the optimum air velocity is about 0.15 m/s and 0.30 m/s.
