We investigate the role of galaxy environment in the evolution of individual galaxies through the AKARI observations of the merging galaxy cluster A2255. MIR diagnostics using N3-S11 colors are adopted to select star-forming galaxies and galaxies in transition between star-forming galaxies and quiescent galaxies. We do not find particular enhancement of star formation rates as a function of galaxy environment, reflected in cluster-centric distance and local surface density of galaxies. Instead, the locations of intermediate MIR-excess galaxies (-1.2 < N3 - S11 < 0.2) show that star-forming galaxies are transformed into passive galaxies in the substructures of A2255, where the local surface density of galaxies is relatively high.

Using the volume-limited Main galaxy sample constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we explore the environmental dependence of the fraction of ‘unconventional’ galaxies: luminous blue and faint red. It is found that the fraction of faint red increases apparently with increasing local density, and the fraction of luminous blue declines substantially with increasing local density, which shows that there is an environmental dependence for color beyond that for luminosity.

Black porgy and fat greenling are commercially important fish species due to the continuously increasing demand in Korea. When estimating acoustically the fish length by a fish sizing echo sounder, it is of crucial importance to know the target strength (TS) to length dependence. In relation to these needs, the target strength experiments for live fishes were conducted in an acrylic salt water tank using two split-beam echo sounders operating at 70 and 120kHz. The target strength under well-controlled laboratory conditions was simultaneously measured with the swimming movement by digital video recording (DVR) system and analyzed as a function of fish length (L) and frequency (or wavelength λ). Equations of the form TS-alog (L)+blog (1)+c were derived for their TS-length dependence. The best fit regression of TS on fork length for black porgy was TS=20.62 log (L, m)-0.62 log (λ, m)-30.68 (r2=0.77). The best fit regression of TS on fork length for fat greenling was TS=12.06 log (L, m)-5.85 log (λ, m)-22.15 (r2=0.44).

In current microlensing planet searches that are being carried out in a survey/follow-up mode, the most important targets for follow-up observations are lensing events with high magnifications resulting from the very close approach of background source stars to the lens. In this paper, we investigate the dependence of the sensitivity to planets on detailed properties of high-magnification events. From this, it is found that the sensitivity does not monotonically increase as the impact parameter between the lens and the source trajectory decreases. Instead, it is roughly the same for events with impact parameters less than a certain threshold value. It is also found that events involving main-sequence source stars are sensitive to planets in a much wider range of separation and mass ratio, than those events involved with giant source stars. Based on these results, we propose observational strategies for maximal planet detections considering the types of telescopes available for follow-up observations.

Specific heat of a crystal is the sum of electronic specific heat, which is the specific heat of conduction electrons, and lattice specific heat, which is the specific heat of the lattice. Since properties such as crystal structure and Debye temperature do not change even in the superconducting state, the lattice specific heat may remain unchanged between the normal and the superconducting state. The difference of specific heat between the normal and superconducting state may be caused only by the electronic specific heat difference between the normal and superconducting states. Critical temperature, at which transition occurs, becomes lower than Tc0 under the influence of a magnetic field. It is well known that specific heat also changes abruptly at this critical temperature, but magnetic field dependence of jump of specific heat has not yet been developed theoretically. In this paper, specific heat jump of superconducting crystals at low temperature is derived as an explicit function of applied magnetic field H by using the thermodynamic relations of A. C. Rose-Innes and E. H. Rhoderick. The derived specific heat jump is compared with experimental data for superconducting crystals of MgCNi3, LiTi2O4 and Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3. Our specific heat jump function well explains the jump up or down phenomena of superconducting crystals.

In this study, the effects of an annealed buffer layer with different thickness on heterojunction diodes based on the ZnO/ZnO/p-Si(111) systems were reported. The effects of an annealed buffer layer with different thickness on the structural, optical, and electrical properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) films on p-Si(111) were also studied. Before zinc oxide (ZnO) deposition, different thicknesses of ZnO buffer layer, 10 nm, 30 nm, 50 nm and 70 nm, were grown on p-Si(111) substrates using a radio-frequency sputtering system; samples were subsequently annealed at 700˚C for 10 minutes in N2 in a horizontal thermal furnace. Zinc oxide (ZnO) films with a width of 280nm were also deposited using a radio-frequency sputtering system on the annealed ZnO/p-Si (111) substrates at room temperature; samples were subsequently annealed at 700˚C for 30 minutes in N2. In this experiment, the structural and optical properties of ZnO thin films were studied by XRD (X-ray diffraction), and room temperature PL (photoluminescence) measurements, respectively. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were measured with a semiconductor parameter analyzer. The thermal tensile stress was found to decrease with increasing buffer layer thickness. Among the ZnO/ZnO/p-Si(111) diodes fabricated in this study, the sample that was formed with the condition of a 50 nm thick ZnO buffer layer showed a strong c-axis preferred orientation and I-V characteristics suitable for a heterojunction diode.

In this study, we examined the spatial dependence and association of Ambrosia beetle, Platypus koryoensis, which is the vector of oak wilt disease caused by Rafaelea sp. using two geostatistical methods. Two adjacent sampling plots were selected and named as "Sector A" and "Sector B". Sector A area was 63 ha and Sector B area was 420 ha, respectively. We arbitrarily separated each sampling plot by 50m×50m grids. Sector A and B were separated by 19×15 and 43×41 grids, respectively. The oak wilt disease damage level of tree was classified by amount of frass of Ambrosia beetle near target oak tree as follows: Lost tree (LT), Severe damage (SD), Intermediate damage (ID), and Light damage (LD). Number of each damage level of oak tree was counted and recorded in each sampling grid. Spatial dependence and association of oak wilt damage was analyzed and compared using mathematical variogram models and spatial analysis by distance indices (SADIE). Variogram model ranges were 179~368m in Sector A and 634~1073m in Sector B, respectively. The damage levels of all trees in each sector were indicated as aggregated distribution by aggregation indices of SADIE (Ia > 1). Each damage level pair had strong association in the consecutive orders than in any random order based on the results of SADIE association test. The spatial dependence and association of oak wilt damage levels presented here provide the baseline information necessary to understand and manage oak wilt disease in Korea.

Species of fish such as striped beakperch, bluefin searobin and konoshiro gizzard shad are commercially very important due to their high demand in the Korean market. When estimating acoustically the abundance of stocks for these species, it is of crucial importance to know the target strength (TS) to the length dependence. In relation to these needs, the TS experiments were conducted on three different species in an acrylic salt water tank using two split-beam echo sounders of 70 and 120 kHz. The TS for these three species under the controlled condition was simultaneously measured with the swimming movement by a DVR system and analyzed as a function of fish length (L) and frequency (or wavelength λ). The equation of the form TS=a log (L)+b log (λ)+c was derived for their TS-length dependence. The best fit regression of TS on fork length for striped beakperch was estimated as TS=35.67 log (L, m) -15.67 log (λ, m) -46.69 (r2=0.78). Furthermore, the best fit regression of TS on fork length for konoshiro gizzard shad was shown to be TS=25.85 log (L, m) -5.85 log (λ, m) -32.22 (r2=0.51). The averaged TS for 12 bluefin searobins with a mean length of 24.36cm at 70 kHz was analyzed to be -41.55dB. In addition, the averaged tilt angle obtained simultaneously by a DVR system with TS measurements for 27 konoshiro gizzard shads swimming within an acrylic salt water tank was estimated at -2.7˚.

The effects of thermal properties on the crystallization behavior of CaMgSi2O6 glass-ceramics were investigated as a function of sintering temperature from 800˚C to 900˚C. The crystallization behavior of the specimens depended on the sintering temperature, which could be evaluated from the differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. With increasing sintering temperature, the thermal conductivity of the sintered specimens increased, while the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the sintered specimens decreased. These results could be attributed to the increase of crystallization, confirmed from the estimation by density measurements. Also, the thermal diffusivity and specific heat capacity of the sintered specimens were discussed with relation to the sintering temperature. Typically, a thermal conductivity of 3.084 W/m˚C, CTE of 8.049 ppm/˚C, thermal diffusivity of 1.389 mm2/s and specific heat capacity of 0.752 J/g˚C were obtained for CaMgSi2O6 specimens sintered at 900˚C for 5 h.
